Ryan O'Toole liked thisToday marks Paul Hoffman's retirement from Marathon Cheese Corporation. And while we didn't work together for long, it was long enough for me to learn something from him. Paul is a true gentleman. Soft-spoken, thoughtful, exceedingly kind, and deliberate. And he does one small thing exceptionally well. He uses your name. Not just in conversation. In emails. Repeatedly. Warmly and naturally. It sounds like a tiny thing. It isn't. Lawyers are trained to be responsive, precise, and efficient. (And I say that as someone who has earned a gold star in short, efficient communication.) We acknowledge. We answer. We move things forward. Paul does all of that. But somehow, even in the most ordinary exchange, he also makes the person on the other end feel like a person — not just the recipient of the next communication. I noticed it. And, eventually, I started doing it too. More than two decades into this profession, I still find myself picking up lessons from the people around me. Often, they aren't about law at all. They're in the small details of how someone chooses to operate. Congratulations on your retirement, Paul! And thank you for making me a better lawyer.

Ryan O'Toole liked thisToday I visited one of our plants to look at a piece of equipment that’s about to undergo a capital upgrade. Could I review the contract without ever seeing it? Of course. I’m not an engineer. I’m not going to tell anyone how the equipment should be designed, installed, or maintained. But I’ll be a better lawyer if I understand what I’m writing about. I’ll ask better questions. I’ll understand why certain contract provisions matter. I’ll have better conversations with the people who use the equipment every day. And when an issue comes up six months from now, I’ll have context that simply can’t be gained from reading a purchase agreement. Sometimes the best legal work starts by putting on safety glasses and walking out to the plant floor.
