Because the goal isn’t simply to collect more data. Funders need to trust that their investment is producing measurable results. The people nonprofits serve need to trust that their personal information is being handled responsibly. Those may sound like two separate issues. They’re not. Both depend on how an organization collects, manages, uses, and protects its data. And there’s another important shift happening: impact measurement is moving beyond an annual reporting exercise. The same data nonprofits use to demonstrate results to funders can also help leaders make better program decisions, understand what’s working, and identify where changes are needed. So the question isn't simply, “Can we report our results?” It’s: Can we measure what changed, learn from the data, communicate it clearly, and protect the information people have trusted us with? Let's continue to evolve and move forward in order to see real change at the community level.Sheri Chaney Jones shared thisUnpopular opinion in my corner of the world: "trust-based philanthropy" has become a way for some funders to avoid having a strategy. I want to be careful here, because the critique it was built on is correct. The old model was condescending. Restricted grants, endless reporting, program officers who'd never done the work telling people who had how to do it. Trust-based philanthropy named a real problem and named it well. But somewhere in the last few years, trust got treated as the whole strategy. Trust isn't a strategy. It's a precondition for one. The version I actually believe in is harder than either extreme. Be clear about what you're trying to change and say it out loud. Fund the people closest to the work with real flexibility and multi-year money. Then stay in the room when things aren't working, instead of quietly declining to renew and calling it respect for grantee autonomy. Not trust or rigor. Both. It's uncomfortable and I think it's the only version that earns the name. Curious where people land on this, especially those of you on the receiving end of our grants. I can take it!

Sheri Chaney Jones liked thisSheri Chaney Jones liked thisOhio VC Fest kicked off with Lindsay Karas Stencel moderating a panel on building without breaking, which is basically the whole idea behind BOLDER Inc. and BOLD VC: helping founders build great companies without losing themselves in the process. We did a little business, but the best part of two days in Cleveland was the relationships. I caught up with partners I don't get to see nearly enough, and I had dinner with one of our portfolio companies for the first time in person, so we finally got to know each other as people instead of faces on a screen. I also met founders working on things like replacing spinal fusions, a treatment that's been the standard for decades, along with a whole range of healthcare and AI companies, and it was a good reminder that a lot of what's being built in the Midwest is flying under the radar. Cleveland and Ohio really showed up this week. 🙌 As I always say, I get to spend my days surrounded by people way smarter than me, and this week was no exception. Thank you to JumpStart Inc. and the whole VC Fest team for pulling it together and we were proud to sponsor such an amazing event!

We are so grateful to be awarded $950,000 from the Ohio Attorney General's Office to support survivors of sexual assault and prevention. Thank you to our state leaders for recognizing that healing and prevention take deep investment. And thank you to the Women Helping Women of SW Ohio advocates and prevention educators who show up 24/7 for survivors and young people: on scene, at 26 hospitals, on the hotline, in 16 courts, on 2 university campuses, and in 50+ classrooms across SW Ohio. The work continues. Because the national headlines are not just headlines. They are complex. They are common. They are consequential. They are triggering for multitudes. For millions across our nation. And what we know—what the Survivor Movement has ALWAYS known: Time’s Up. Time’s up on treating sexual violence as inevitable. It is not a right of passage. It is not some pre-destined birthright. Time’s up on culture allowing mindsets and policies that Survivors should simply survive. Time’s up on waiting for the next wave of headlines and the next wave of someone’s autonomy being stripped away. It’s wrong. It’s inhumane. 53 years ago Women Helping Women of SW Ohio launched as a rape crisis center. What fortitude and vision those young #founders had as they set up a room in the University of Cincinnati area. What commitment. We are grateful for their #bravery and their #Legacy. And we are grateful for this incredible investment as we continue to partner with and entire #ecosystem of #universities, #hospitals, #workplaces, #policymakers, #media, #volunteers, #funders, and #neighbors to invest in the true birthright of everyone in our region and in our Nation: Safety.
