Tyler Garns posted thisWhat is the best marketing strategy? Every small business owner has grappled with this question. The answer is as long as the list of lies told by politicians during election season. Why are there so many answers? It comes down to 4 things: MARKETING IS A VERY BROAD TERM. What exactly is marketing? Is it PR? Is it advertising? Is it messaging? Is it branding? Is it positioning? Is it lead generation? Is it demand generation? STRATEGY IS A VERY BROAD TERM. If you ask small business owners and even marketers what strategy means, you’ll get a different answer from every person you ask. SMALL BUSINESS IS A REALLY BROAD IDEA. Even the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is confused. They’ve come up with a different definition for every industry. THE METHODS FOR MARKETING ARE EXPANDING EXPONENTIALLY. To top it all off, the internet and technology have spawned thousands of new methods for getting in front of customers and those options are growing every day. No wonder marketing can be confusing! But it doesn’t have to be. There are 5 fundamental principles that every business owner should review to determine the best marketing strategies for their business. Click here to read the 5 Principles Of A Successful Marketing Strategy. (2 minute read): https://lnkd.in/geQC5zTd Tyler P.S. I'll be opening up another Marketing Strategy School class this summer. Go ahead and comment to let me know if you're interested in participating. I'll add you to the list.

Tyler Garns shared thisSo there I was, a young teenager, with a 40+ year old man up against the wall at Dodger stadium. While in line for hotdogs with my girlfriend, I had noticed that my wallet was missing from my back pocket. I peered over my shoulder and immediately found the culprit. Everything about him said he was guilty. I could smell the guilt on him. My judgmental 16-year old brain had it all figured out. This guy was shady. He had bumped into me from behind when we first got into line and taken my wallet. I could see it in his eyes. His faded tattoos were screaming “felon” to me. His tattered t-shirt may as well have been his prison jumper. I knew I had my guy. So, I turned around with all the courage and confidence I could muster and confronted him. He denied taking my wallet. In my eyes, that made him even more guilty. So, I asked him to step out of line so I could check his pockets. Luckily, instead of decking me, he obliged. He emptied his pockets and swore to me that he hadn’t taken my wallet. My girlfriend urged me to let it go. Had I gotten it wrong? Was my assessment of the data incorrect? You’d be surprised how often you’re assessing very simple data incorrectly in your business, and how badly this can impact your business growth. Watch this short video to see a clear example of how the data you’re looking at might be wrong and what you can do about it. Here's the video: https://lnkd.in/gNGGP6BN

Tyler Garns shared thisWhich business will win? The sad reality of business is that the good guys don't always win. I've seen this over and over again. Here are two business scenarios: Business A: ➡ Has the best product/service in their market ➡ Business owner works 60+ hours per week ➡ Owner & team are passionate about making a difference, and they do ➡ Owner volunteers in the community ➡ The company always does right by the customer Business B: ➡ Inferior productor service ➡ Lazy, opportunistic business owner with questionable values ➡ Customers often feel cheated ➡ Owner cares more about making money than serving customers/clients ➡ Has better marketing campaigns The problem here is that Business B usually wins. It's not right, I know. If you've ever been frustrated because your business is more like Business A, but you never seem to make progress like your competitors do, its probably because their marketing is better than yours. This is just the reality of business. The company with the better offer and the better marketing wins. If you're tired of not winning the way you deserve to be winning, then let's chat: https://lnkd.in/gB489W4B My new Marketing Strategy School Coaching Program could be the right thing for you. Tyler Garns shared thisIt's been an honor to be a part of this project. Hal Halladay 🇺🇦 and Gina Halladay are amazing and doing amazing work.Tyler Garns shared thisWhen we started Wrap Ukraine with Quilts, we didn’t fully understand where it would lead and how it might impact Ukrainian refugee children. We wanted to provide comfort and human connection. A handmade quilt created and delivered with love was our answer and opportunity. We had hope but also felt plenty of uncertainty. Tyler Garns from Box Out Marketing donated his marketing expertise and helped us create a landing page. More importantly, he had the insight to create a method for the recipients of the quilts to contact the quiltmaker. A genius method to connect to the people we are serving. Using a QR code attached to each quilt, the refugee can open a dialogue box and send a message that is delivered via email to the quiltmaker that registered their quilt on our website. Connections of support and care are being made. This week, we received this message sent originally in Ukrainian and translated via Google Translate: “Welcome. My name is Kira. I am 5 years old. Thank you for the incredible blanket and for your care. I am not at home. In Poland now, but your blanket gives me a feeling of home comfort.” Maybe not a perfect translation but the message is received loud and clear. We are approaching 3k in quilts donated and delivered to Ukrainian refugee children and mothers. It’s just getting started and we see a path to tens of thousands of quilts with the help of so many kind and giving people. “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” - Mother Teresa #wrapukrainewithquilts #standwithukraine #people #kindness #leadership #giveback

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisRaylen Davis from Thryv hit the Ai Accelerator LIVE stage today, and he brought a gift for the room. I am sharing it with you. He will not mind. Here is the question that silenced the room. Most founders cannot answer it. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Ai for the best [thing you do]... Does your name come up? Or does your competitor's? If you do not know, you are not alone. Most do not. And that is the problem. SEO is not the game anymore. The new game is whether the Ai names YOU when a buyer asks. That is the new shelf. If you are not on it, you do not exist. Doesn't matter how good your product is. Doesn't matter how long you have been in business. The buyer is asking the machine first, and the machine is naming someone. It might as well be you. Raylen and his team brought the data, the tools, and the chops to figure out exactly where you stand and put you on that shelf. Free audit. No catch. They will show you: * How Ai search engines see (or do not see) your brand * Where your competitors are getting cited and you are not * The specific gaps killing your online visibility * A clear roadmap to fix it No pitch. No catch. Just the data. If you have been wondering why the leads are slowing down even though your product got better, this is probably why. Run the audit. Stop guessing. Get your Free Online Visibility Audit: https://lnkd.in/eapWJwsS Say hi to Raylen. Tell him Mike sent you.

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisWhy does work always seem to take exactly as long as the time we give it? This past week I was reminded of a concept called Parkinson’s Law, which says that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. I started noticing this in my own workflow. When I gave myself a big block of time to finish something, the task somehow stretched out and took most of it. But when the time window was tighter, I was more focused and efficient. It also made me think about how incentives shape the way people work. For example, when someone is paid hourly, there isn’t always the same pressure to finish something quickly because more time can mean more pay. But when someone is responsible for completing a specific job or outcome, efficiency becomes much more important. As someone who’s interested in entrepreneurship and how businesses operate, it was interesting to think about how incentives and structure can influence productivity. Going forward, I want to experiment more with setting clearer time limits for certain tasks so they don’t expand more than they need to. Curious if anyone else has noticed this dynamic in their own work.

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisLast week I was in Dubai. I flew out early Friday morning. At that time, there was no knowledge of what would unfold in the Middle East hours later. I landed and saw the texts from my family. I was grateful that my planned itinerary got me home safely. The experience caused me to contemplate so much and filled me with gratitude. The world is complex and I am seasoned enough (old) to know that life can change in moments. I was eager to see the news but most important to me was the messages that included my family asking if I was safe, friends checking in and my business colleagues who knew about this trip reaching out. I was grateful to be safe and grateful to be cared about. That seemed more relevant and present to me than it had been in years. Throughout the weekend, I felt gratitude and at one point asked myself, “I am there for people when their world feels scary?” I know from research that people who feel cared for at work are - 3.2x more likely to be happy at work (representing a 35% increase since the onset of the pandemic); and - 3.7x more likely to recommend working for their company (representing a 49% increase since the start of the pandemic). There is a lot that can knock people off balance that affects their work but is not created at work - geopolitical instability - a sick child - aging parents - struggling marriage - cancer diagnosis or serious injury - dying or injured pet Everyone is carrying something. Being a leader in those moments isn’t about MANAGING process, transactions or your to do list. Being present is what people need. It’s seeing people and creating calm and safety when the ground feels uncertain. Be a steady voice for others. I’m grateful to be home and grateful for the people who have cared about me over the many years. Thanks.

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisI’ve lived long enough to see the invention of earth shaking technology stuff - The PC - The internet - Mobile computing - The iPhone - Cloud computing - And now… AI And I also remember life before all of it. What a contrast! In 1988, I bought my first computer. It was a desktop (no laptops) with a monochrome monitor. It cost $2,400 back then ($6,600 in today’s dollars) - Clock speed: 356k. - Hard drive: 20 MB. I wasn't a programmer or a tech guy. But I took out a loan to buy it. I was on my way to The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and I guess I believed in its potential to help me succeed. I was so excited that I invited my neighbor over to see it. His wife’s first question? “How much will this increase your electricity bill?” Fair question. She was considering costs. I was considering potential. Today we’re standing in another one of those moments with AI. Massive changes are occurring. As always, there is cost and potential. Aditya Agarwal, former CTO of Dropbox, shared this thought that made sense to me. “You can hold wonder and grief in the same hand, mourn a version of yourself while sprinting toward a new one.” I think that’s what real progress feels like. It can be messy and creates paradoxes. In my experience, the people who thrive in moments like this aren’t the ones who understand everything that’s coming. They’re the ones willing to explore, test and learn as it unfolds. Curiosity has always been the most durable operating system.

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisThere’s been a running theme in my recent conversations with small business owners: uncertainty. Whether it’s about the economy, their ability to support their growth with new hires or new tech, or how to balance customer demands with financial reality, there’s lots of hesitation. And while I get the temptation to retreat, now is the time to stand up and stand out. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. AI can give business owners a chance to stay laser‑focused on customers, make smarter decisions, and communicate with the kind of transparency that builds trust. I outlined five practical ways to do this in my latest article for Entrepreneur Media. #SmallBusinessGrowth https://lnkd.in/eVcewPTj

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisSomething I’ve been thinking about this week is how progress in work is a lot like compounding interest. It’s easy to think success comes from one big breakthrough or a single opportunity. But the more I reflect on it, the more it seems like progress usually comes from something much simpler — consistently putting in small efforts and sticking to a process over time. In a way, developing a skill works a lot like compound interest. Each day you learn a little more, improve a little more, and refine your process a little more. On any given day the progress might feel small, but over months or years those small improvements start to stack on top of each other. It reminded me of something from The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel: “Compounding works best when you can give a plan years or decades to grow. Endurance is key.” He’s talking about investing, but the idea applies just as well to building skills and experience. When you stay patient and keep showing up, the effort starts to compound in ways that aren’t always obvious in the short term. Still learning this myself, but it’s a good reminder to focus on the process and trust the long-term results.

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked this13 years ago, I sat in the back of a room I didn’t think I belonged in. A conference in Phoenix. CEO training. Big energy, big titles, big rooms. And then there was me: The girl with the cleaning company. Small business. Small voice. Big imposter syndrome. I took notes like my life depended on it - because in some ways, it did. Next week, I’m walking into that same room at Elite Entrepreneurs. Not to sit. To speak. That’s what time does - if you let it stretch you. If you stop waiting to “arrive” and start building the version of you who belongs. I know now: - The rooms that scare you are often the ones that shape you - Confidence is just clarity in motion - The version of you who “isn’t ready yet” is lying to protect you I don’t owe that version of me an apology. But I do owe her this: You were never just the girl with the cleaning company. You were a CEO the whole damn time. PS: These days, I run an 8-figure cleaning company, and I coach other cleaning business owners to do the same. But it started in that one room. Scared. Unsure. Small. What room are you standing in right now… that future-you will thank you for?

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisI may be stepping down as CEO… I think I found a new job as a driver. In January, one driver earned $8,000 from only 45 trips. A SERIOUS record!!!! (For context: a full time “rideshare” driver maybe does 100 trips per week and takes home ~$1100) This woman did only 45 trips and took home $8k!!! That’s maybe 3-4 days of driving? Meaning, she can still do another 400 trips on Uber/Lyft, take home her $4-5k from rideshare, and finish the month with $12k-13k. Insane. Here’s the deal: rideshare pays ~$11/trip. HUM is not rideshare. HUM is the only private driving app that gives professional drivers the tools they need to make these kinds of earnings. Private rides are so in. Also, I take back what I said. Going to run this all the way 🚀🚀

Tyler Garns liked thisTyler Garns liked thisNot too long ago, my daughter sent me a text with a screenshot of a letter written by one of the busiest men in Utah. This man, Brian Taylor has responsibility for 5,386 church congregations, and about 2.2 million people. It’s one of the hardest, most time consuming assignments in his organization. My daughter was in a meeting where he was present, and she had been playing the piano for the meeting. There are usually hundreds, sometimes thousands of people in these meetings. No one generally pays attention to who is playing the piano. There was nothing out of the ordinary. She had played the piano for many meetings like this in the past. But Brian, probably with the help of a receptionist or scribe, took the time to write and send her a personal letter, thanking her for the music. A very ordinary day, turned into a very extraordinary day for her because of just one simple act of thoughtfulness. A few months later, I saw Brian in a restaurant during a lunch break in Salt Lake. I told him what it meant to my daughter. He told me that everywhere he goes, he tries to identify a few people who he thinks he could help or recognize on a one to one basis. It reminded me that if he’s able to think like this, as busy as he is, then all of us are capable of that kind of mindset. Standing and speaking to thousands might be helpful to some. But a personal, thoughtful, one to one interaction is transformational to the one. It’s something that person will never forget. It’s something that goes in their journal. It’s something that goes in their keepsake box. If you made a goal to do this for just one person, every day… imagine the legacy you’d leave behind.

Your LSA budget isn’t spend. It’s access. Set it low → you miss leads Set it high → you stay eligible Google isn’t generating more leads because you raised your budget. It’s distributing a fixed number of leads. Most roofers set budgets to control spend. That’s backwards. You’re limiting your visibility. Not your cost. #RoofingSales #GoogleLSA #ContractorLife #RoofingBusiness

SEO isn't optional—it's the engine that brings customers to your doorstep. Two quick truths come through: search is the main channel for new visitors, and local SEO plus high-quality content, amplified by smart social use, stretches every dollar you spend. Practical steps for SMBs: Audit top keywords and fix technical basics (speed, mobile-friendliness, clean meta data). Own local search: claim your Google Business Profile, keep NAP consistent across listings, and nurture reviews. Create high-quality, answer-focused content that matches real customer questions. Use social strategically to extend reach and boost signals that search engines value. Measure impact: track organic traffic, rankings, and conversions; adjust monthly. Take 60 minutes this week to map a local SEO plan and draft a content topic that answers a common customer question. How will you start dominating search for your business? #SEO #SmallBusiness #LocalSEO #ContentMarketing #DigitalMarketing

SEO is what makes your business visible. On Google. On Bing. On AI platforms. On the tools people use every single day to find services. If you’re not showing up there you’re invisible. And hoping customers “hear about you” isn’t a strategy. Here’s the reality: Right now, someone is searching for the exact service you offer. They’re typing it in. They’re comparing options. They’re ready to make a decision. If you don’t appear Your competitor does. SEO is what puts your business in those conversations. It’s what gets your website in front of people who are actively looking to buy. Not scrolling. Not browsing. Not killing time. Searching. That’s the highest intent traffic you can get. Without SEO, you’re relying on: • Word of mouth • Referrals • Cold outreach • Hope With SEO, you build a system. A system that brings in: • Daily impressions • Consistent traffic • Qualified leads And it works 24/7. While you’re sleeping. While you’re working. While you’re on vacation. You have two choices: Invest in being found. Or forever wish and hope customers stumble across you. The businesses that show up win. The ones that don’t Get forgotten.

While there is a lot of chatter about Agentic search, Shelly Palmer really nails it in his latest POV. “We’ve spent years optimizing for Google’s search algorithm. Now we must optimize for agentic commerce. Agents don’t care about your marketing copy. They care about structured product data, clear specifications, competitive pricing, and reliable fulfillment. Your SEO playbook won’t work here.” For humans, it’s all about clever copy and enduring brand experiences. For machines, it’s readable specs, seamless API integrations, and data that speaks to intelligent agents making shopping decisions in real time. I believe we need to win at both the human and machine level. As we step into the AI-laden era, we need to ensure all our efforts are human verified. #AgenticCommerce #AI #NextGenRetail #FutureOfShopping #StructuredData #connectedmedia #search #social #commerce #networkedexperiences Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eAXJSiGr

Another case study: why optimizing for the RIGHT leads matters a lot more than optimizing for lead volume. A large roofing company on the east coast spends in excess of $30k per month per channel on PPC and LSA. They have extremely efficient CPLs on both channels - but their ROAS and profit on PPC weren't where we wanted them to be. Lead quality? Not the issue. Close rates are healthy and consistent between channels, and qualified lead percentages steady between channels (great way to benchmark your PPC lead quality is to compare to LSA lead quality and close rate). But what did we notice? Revenue per job on PPC was half of revenue per job on LSA. What gives? This company has a low-price-of-entry tune up offer that covers really basic repair work. Great for lead capture, may be great in the long run for customer LTV (need to validate that hypothesis though), BUT it depresses revenue per job in the short/near term. The offer was visible in PPC but, importantly, NOT in LSA. The solve? Remove the tune-up offer from headlines and promo assets, set lower tCPAs for explicit repair queries (which, for this company, would shunt into that low-dollar offer from a sales process standpoint), remove that specific offer from landing pages in order to give them more high-dollar at bats that drive profits within the attribution window that works for them. BTW - none of this is possible without attribution that is built to capture all these data points. If your agency can't get to this level, let's talk. ----- About me: I lead the team at Lost & Found Marketing, where we help businesses Grow With Confidence through transparently profitable lead generation.

Is Your Practice Ready for AI Search? GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is forcing traditional SEO to adapt and change. For years, the goal for dental and medical practice owners was simple: get onto page 1 of Google. But the landscape is shifting rapidly. With the rise of AI-driven search: think ChatGPT and Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE): patients aren't just scrolling through a list of links anymore. They are looking for "The Answer." This is where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) comes in. While traditional SEO focused heavily on backlinks and keyword density, GEO is about building undeniable authority. It’s about providing clear, structured information that AI models can easily digest, trust, and recommend. If a prospective patient asks an AI tool, "Who is the most experienced cosmetic dentist near me?" you don’t want to be just another link on a page. You want the AI to cite your practice as the definitive recommendation. Transitioning from "ranking" to "responding" is the key to staying ahead in 2026. How are you currently preparing your practice’s digital footprint for the age of AI search?

Here's the thing: if you're still measuring SEO success by watching your traffic graph climb, you're playing a game that ended two years ago. I've had three calls this month with business owners staring at flat traffic numbers, convinced their SEO investment is failing. Full disclosure: their SEO is actually working. The problem isn't their strategy; it's their scorecard.

how to increase AOV without breaking the bank. remember when CPMs were $10 or maybe $15 in the good old days? those days are long gone. offering something with high perceived value is crucial in today’s $35-55 cpm environment. crafting unique offers can significantly impact customer behavior and retention. issues: → rising CPMs require innovative offer structures to boost AOV effectively. → traditional discounts may not be as impactful as strategies like bundling high-value add-ons with core products. → cost-related concerns pose challenges in maintaining margins while enhancing AOV. solution: → gift-with-purchase strategies can help reduce CAC and increase AOV. for example, offering a free travel-size product with a full-size purchase can increase the overall spend while providing added value. → introduce exclusive bundles that customers can’t resist, like pairing face cream with a complimentary towel. customers see more value in the combination and are more likely to purchase both items together. → repurpose your offer strategy by focusing on increasing both the average spend per customer and expanding your customer base. for instance, you could reframe your offer from "10% off" to "spend $50 and get a $10 gift card." this makes the offer more attractive to customers while encouraging them to spend more to unlock the reward. make your offers work harder: focus on crafting offers that not only boost AOV but also enhance customer retention. analyze your product performance, bundle wisely, and experiment with various incentives to create lasting value for your customers. it’s not just about selling more, it’s about creating a win-win for both your brand and your customers.
