Our #sensors told the story in real time. At Mālama Loko ea Foundation on O‘ahu’s North Shore, we saw 7 distinct #crests in just the first 2 hours and continue to see swings 14 hours later. At Alakoko Loko I‘a, we watched the waves wrap around Kaua‘i and reach all the way to its southern shores. As the sun set and news cameras could no longer see the ocean through the darkness, our sensors continued to measure the rise and fall throughout the state - capturing swings of multiple feet within minutes. We're grateful to the Office of Senator Brian Schatz for the initial federal funding that made these sensors possible. And to Purple Maiʻa Foundation and Kua'aina Ulu 'Auamo for their continued support and trust. 📊 Technical Detail: Like NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s tsunami-rated stations, our sensors capture water level data at a 1 Hz frequency and report 1-minute averaged data, which enables us to detect the movement of these tsunami's.

This is one of the things I've been thinking about a lot since my conversation with Leah Belsky, who runs education at OpenAI. AI is extraordinarily good at removing friction. A kid can take a picture of a long-division problem and get an explanation — or an answer — instantly. And it can feel like learning. But sometimes the friction is the learning. Getting stuck. Trying something that doesn’t work. Sitting with the problem longer than you want to. Building the muscle to figure something out yourself. For years, edtech has been chasing the dream of a personalized tutor for every kid. Leah told me she now thinks that dream is further away than she expected — partly because a great tutor knows when not to give you the answer. They know when to make you struggle. Which feels like one of the harder questions we’ll have to answer about AI and education: where is friction unnecessary, and where is it essential? Because if we make everything easier, we may accidentally make some things harder to learn. The whole conversation was different from what I expected and very worth listening to. Link in comments.

Zak Barry liked thisZak Barry liked thisAs some of you may know, my mom ran for office back in 2022, for State House District 19 for the State of Hawai'i. She had 0 political experience but gave it her 100% because she wanted to defeat Mark Hashem, as he was chair of the agricultural committee at the time and shut down any bill put forward that tried to protect children from pesticide drift, as well as shut down bills to support small, sustainable farmers. My mom didn't win, but she came close and she knocked on every single door in our district and started important conversations about the importance of protecting our environment and human health, and the need to get someone new in office who actually cares about our community and stewarding it for future generations. My mom really didn't want to have to run again, but she was determined to help find someone who would, who could actually win, and do everything she could to help them get into office. I am so excited to share that an AMAZING community leader Kahi Pacarro has stepped up to run for this seat, and he is actually going to win. He started Sustainable Coastlines Hawai'i back in 2011, and has been heavily involved in the community for decades. I encourage you to check out his platform. Even if you don't live in Hawai'i, he is an amazing, progressive leader who is worth supporting. So much change can happen at the state level, so everyone go support Kahi!! https://lnkd.in/epzSazcm

The most dangerous phrase in venture building? "I already know that." Rowan Cheung is right. Learning how to learn is a distinct skill. But after 20+ years of bridging markets and building systems, I’ve realized something fundamental. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. It is fueled entirely by willingness. To build a system that actually fixes a broken process—whether it's simplifying US-Africa market entry or integrating AI into sports management—you have to admit you don't have the answer yet. You have to be willing to be a beginner. You have to be willing to ask the "dumb" questions. The moment your ego convinces you that you’re the expert, your growth stops. And the venture fails. When I look at a broken system, I don't try to force my old answers onto new problems. I embrace the willingness to learn the problem from the ground up. That is how you build things that last. Humility isn't a weakness. It's the ultimate competitive advantage. What’s one thing you’ve had to "unlearn" to get to the next level in your career?
