So honored to be featured on the Startup CPG podcast this week. Really enjoyed the conversation on what we’re building at OpenSky Ventures, how we think about early stage investing across consumer and AI, and lessons from my operator journey that continue to shape how I invest today. Appreciate the Startup CPG team for having me on. If you’re building in the space, would love to hear what resonated. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/g_w3nAQ9
What do a video game studio, a gourmet candy empire, and a CPG venture fund have in common? Josh Resnick. Host Hannah Dittman sits down with Josh, co-founder and General Partner at OpenSky Ventures and former co-founder of Sugarfina USA LLC, to get the real story on how early-stage consumer investors think, what they need to see before writing a check, and why chasing the highest valuation possible might actually be working against you. OpenSky invests at the pre-seed stage in food, beverage, health, wellness, and the tech behind consumer brand growth. Josh and his partner are both former operators, and that changes everything about how they evaluate deals and show up for founders. A few things that stuck with us: 💡 Valuation is more art than science. Don't obsess over the highest number, obsess over the right partners. 💡 A down round isn't always fatal, but setting yourself up for one usually is. Be realistic early. 💡 Slow down before you scale up. Jumping to Costco before you've tested and learned can burn bridges and budget. 💡 Always raise a little more than you think you need. Things take longer and cost more than expected, every time. 💡 The founders Josh bets on: great storytellers, calm under pressure, authentic brand builders with must-have positioning. 💡 Go-to-market is at least a third of the equation. A great product alone isn't enough anymore. 💡 Ask investors what they've actually done for founders. Get references. Ask what happens when things go sideways. 💡 Want to break into investing? Become an LP first. It's the best education money can buy. Find #3/4 critical in food & commerce. Even with 💰, explaining why you LOST Costco Wholesale to your next big client Is way bigger of a hit than even the lost listing fees or distribution costs you might've sunk getting into them in the first place (bad enough, right) In the new AI Commerce world, there's a lot of hype so good on you for guiding new builders in the right direction Josh Resnick
