India’s seafood story just got bigger: we are now the 4th largest marine-products exporter globally. What’s the game plan beyond the headline? What’s happening: - In FY 2024-25, India exported 16.85 lakh metric tonnes of marine products (from 10.51 lakh mts in FY 2014-15). - Export value reached approximately US$7.2 billion for the year. - Exports now reach over 130 countries, up from 105 countries a decade ago. Why this matters for exporters: - The growth shows India’s improved competitiveness in what’s traditionally a premium export segment (frozen shrimp, squid, fish). - The high-value nature of these exports means better margins than bulk commodities. - Market diversification into newer geographies and stronger supply chains are indicated. 🌾 Top 10 Rice Exporting Countries: Global Insights 🌾 Rice remains a staple for billions worldwide, and its global trade highlights the power of a few key players. India leads overwhelmingly, exporting 33.1 million tons, nearly three times that of the second-largest exporter, Thailand (10.9 M). Together with Vietnam (8.6 M) and Pakistan (6.7 M), these Southeast Asian nations dominate global rice exports, supplying the majority of international demand. Interestingly, Belgium (4.9 M) and Netherlands (1.6 M) also appear in the top 10. As rice isn’t a staple in Europe, these countries likely serve as re-export hubs, leveraging processing and trade networks to distribute rice across the EU. Other major economies like China (3.2 M), Myanmar (3.2 M), U.S.A. (3 M), and Brazil (2 M) export less due to high domestic consumption and lower trade orientation. Rice Prices Today, October 8th, 2025 Vietnam's rice export prices remain under pressure amid weak global demand and the Philippines’ ongoing import ban. According to the Vietnam Food Association: Vietnam 5% broken white rice: $375–379/ton Jasmine rice: $491–495/ton Fragrant 5% broken: $430–450/ton Prices have dropped about 4% compared to last month and are down 32% year-on-year. The export ban by the Philippines, Vietnam’s largest rice buyer, has been extended until the end of November and may last through year-end. In contrast, domestic rice prices in Vietnam remain relatively stable: IR 504 (raw): 7,700–7,850 VND/kg OM 380 (finished): 8,800–9,000 VND/kg Retail fragrant rice: ~22,000 VND/kg Other exporters: India: $372–376/ton Thailand: $339–343/ton Pakistan: $342–346/ton According to FAO and IRRI, ample global supply and sluggish demand are shaping a buyer-driven market, forcing exporters like Vietnam and Thailand to face falling profit margins and rising inventories. Philippine importers are expected to wait out the ban to negotiate better prices once it lifts.
