✨ DESIGNED BY MOAA: THE BULB – Urban Confluence Silicon Valley ✨ Back in 2020, we took part in one of the world’s most ambitious architecture competitions, Urban Confluence Silicon Valley. 💗 We didn’t make it to the finals, but we walked away with something just as valuable: a year of pure creativity, passion, and growth. 💡💗 Now, in 2025, I’ve revisited THE BULB through new eyes, using today’s tools to transform static images into a dynamic video experience. A tribute to innovation, culture, and the unstoppable spirit of Silicon Valley. 🚀 THE BULB rises 200 ft on the park’s eastern edge, a fusion of technology, history, architecture, engineering, and art, inspired by San José’s original Electric Light Tower. In this fourth episode of our series exploring iconic buildings and the timeless human insight they carry forward, we visit Dessau, Germany, where the Bauhaus Building, completed in 1926, reshaped the way we design, learn, and collaborate. Constructed in less than a year, this building was not only ahead of its time, it set the tone for an entire century of modernist thinking. Far from a traditional monument, the Bauhaus was a living laboratory. Designed by Walter Gropius, it embodied the spirit of modernism: clarity, rationality, and purpose. A space shaped not by prestige, but by principles. Here are three enduring lessons from this architectural revolution: 𝟏. 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 With flat roofs, open interiors, and exposed materials, every element was intentional. Nothing was ornamental. Every space served a clear purpose. Simplicity was not a style, it was a system. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Architects, artists, and engineers worked side by side. How Modern Design Was Born? Modern design didn’t appear overnight. It was a response to the industrial revolution, to new technologies, and to the way people wanted to live. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pioneers like Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe began rethinking spaces. They stripped away the unnecessary, focusing on functionality, simplicity, and clean lines. This movement was fueled by industrialization, which introduced new materials such as steel, glass, and reinforced concrete. It was also driven by changing lifestyles, as growing cities demanded practical and efficient spaces. Influences from Bauhaus and De Stijl further emphasized the harmony of aesthetics and utility. The Innovation Outpost at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas, exemplifies how modern #architecture can blend sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal with StoVentec Rainscreen Systems. Designed by Parkhill, this state-of-the-art hub for innovation revitalized a historic structure, transforming it into a collaborative space that honors the past while embracing the future. A defining feature of the project is the StoVentec Glass Rainscreen system, which was selected for its mirrored facade and high-performance capabilities. The mirrored glass finish reflects Amarillo’s historic surroundings, symbolizing the intersection of legacy and progress. Originally envisioned as a visual effects studio, the structure evolved into a multipurpose performance space, fulfilling the original intent of fostering innovation and collaboration.
