Are there indications that the number of PhD positions for the Fall 2026 cycle in the US has decreased, and to what extent is that decrease due to funding uncertainty?

The second part of your question is likely unanswerable (or speculative), as no-one had time to conduct proper surveys with applicants for the next year cycle yet. Commented Nov 5 at 15:38

@DmitrySavostyanov I haven't had a chance, but you can certainly find statements from departments explicitly stating funding uncertainty is to blame. No need for a survey when departments just say in "There are no PhD positions this year because of funding uncertainty." Commented Nov 5 at 20:54
  • @ÆzorÆhai-him- Perhaps, I interpret the question differently than you do. To me, "to what extent" means which part of the decline (if any) can be attributed to funding uncertainty. Hence, all other possible factors have to be also accounted for, requiring much more rigorous analysis than you suggested. Commented Nov 5 at 22:07
