First off, I hope this is correct forum and not Stack Exchange for instance. I have Apple M3 Max chip MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.4.1

With the last 2 OS updates I've received the attached Mac message:

apple message

I use Canon IJ Scan Utility V 1.4.0 and my MX922 has driver 3.031 installed. Current driver update available is 3.041 and I'm pretty sure there is an update for the App - I forgot to check. Lately the app has been a little wonky - takes longer than usual to scan or occasionally freezes up and I have to force quit.

I'd like to update the driver and app if applicable, but I am worried about either not being compatible with Sequoia. I dont want to update the system into "incompatibility" and have a busted app or unusable MX922.

Suggestions? Can anyone can tell me if the latest versions will work for sure with my version of macOS with no issues? Update driver and app or what?? Just keep putting up with it? Looking for help. Thank you!!

  • If you want to get rid of it, it's in /Library/Application Support/Canon/ScanGear MP. Commented May 13, 2025 at 17:30

Older hardware is going to find it increasingly difficult to maintain compatibility with newer OSes if the expectation is to use the OEM's original software. OEMs will rarely support their hardware much beyond the 'latest' at the time.

A better solution is to use a third-party scanning utility, and the best in the business is definitely Vuescan. Your device is fully supported directly by the app, with no 'drivers' or system extensions required.

Vuescan has been around for quite a number of years, I first bought it about 14 years ago. There is a trial download which watermarks the output IIRC, but the one-time purchase is well worth it, though the subscription model is new since my purchase. It is still fully developed and supported. It supports a huge range of devices an it's multi-platform too.
