Ted Fleming shared thisCould the key to a younger brain be hiding in your gut? A new study found that transferring gut microbes from young mice into older mice appeared to reverse some age-related changes in brain function, with older mice showing improvements in learning and memory. Meanwhile, previous research has shown the opposite effect: transferring microbes from older mice into younger mice can impair memory and cognitive performance. Before anyone rushes off in search of a "youth transplant," a reality check: - These are mouse studies. - We have no evidence yet that the same effects occur in humans. But what's fascinating is the growing body of evidence pointing to the same conclusion: - The gut microbiome doesn't just influence digestion. - It appears to influence the brain, immune system, metabolism, inflammation, and potentially even aspects of aging itself. Researchers have now demonstrated links between the microbiome and: • Memory and cognition • Anxiety and mood disorders • Immune function • Inflammation • Metabolic health • Healthy aging pathways As someone who has spent two decades living with Crohn's disease, I've watched the science evolve from "gut bacteria help digest food" to a much bigger idea: - The microbiome may function more like an organ system than a passive collection of microbes. My prediction? The future of medicine will increasingly move beyond broad interventions and toward precision microbiome (and other) therapies. Instead of simply treating symptoms, we may eventually be able to modify microbial ecosystems to influence specific outcomes such as mental health, inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and perhaps even aspects of cognitive aging. We're still early. But if the last decade taught us anything, it's that the gut-brain connection is far more powerful than most of us imagined. What area of microbiome science are you most excited about: mental health, aging, metabolic health, autoimmune disease, or something else? #microbiome #guthealth #precisionmedicine #psychobiotics #livetherapeutics https://lnkd.in/g38hVtBmFaecal transplant makes the brains of old mice act young againFaecal transplant makes the brains of old mice act young again

Ted Fleming shared thisOne day I was at the XX Summit by The51 The next day I was a Dragon at my daughter’s all-girls school. The connection was striking. At the summit, the conversation was about a massive shift already underway. Women are expected to control nearly 60% of Canada’s private wealth by 2030 - roughly $4 trillion. Companies with at least one female founder continue to outperform on several dimensions, yet only a fraction of venture capital flows their way (2%). Twenty-four hours later, I was sitting across from a group of elementary school girls pitching business ideas to a panel of volunteer “Dragons.” The shift was happening before my eyes. Some were nervous. Some were fearless. All of them had ideas. And it hit me that the future doesn’t arrive all at once. It shows up gradually - in conference rooms, classrooms, boardrooms, and around family dinner tables. It can be a step as simple as opening a bank account for your child to manage their own money. My 9 yr old recently told me she wanted to start “investing”. As the father of three daughters, I couldn’t help but wonder what opportunities will exist for their generation if we continue building a world where capital, talent, ambition, and opportunity are more equally distributed. The wealth transfer is important. The investment statistics are important. But perhaps the most important thing is helping young people - especially young girls - develop the confidence to raise their hand, share an idea, take a risk, and believe they belong in the room. That’s where every founder journey starts. And to the young entrepreneurs I met the next day: Keep being creative. Keep pitching. The world needs your ideas. ⸻ #Entrepreneurship #Leadership #WomenInBusiness #Innovation #FutureFounders #YYC

Ted Fleming liked thisIf you are at a bioeconomy event in Atlantic Canada and you're not speaking with Barbara M. Campbell or Amanda Kolwich, what are you even doing?Ted Fleming liked thisThe Halifax team had a busy day in the field on Tuesday. Two stops, one theme: the people who know companies early are the reason the rest of us ever get to meet them. First stop ➡️ Springboard Atlantic Inc. Network Meeting Barbara M. Campbell, our Regional Director for Atlantic Canada, joined a panel as part of a professional development workshop for industry engagement professionals across the Network. On the panel with her: ▪️ Iaian Archibald, DeepSense ▪️ Kristin Tweel Cierra, PhD, MBA, Genome Atlantic ▪️ Linda Campbell, Saint Mary's University The not-so-small question on the table: how do you get from a first conversation with a company to an actual collaboration? Here are three things we tell our member companies: 1️⃣ Relationships come first. Meaningful collaborations take time to build. 2️⃣ Alignment matters. Manage expectations early and work to bridge the timing gap between academic and industry schedules. 3️⃣ Use your ecosystem and your network. Be an active participant, not a spectator. Much of our deal flow at NPC comes from referrals, and many of those start with people at organizations like Springboard, working inside colleges and universities. Second stop ➡️ Prince Edward Island BioAlliance's Emergence mentor/mentee reception Barbara and Amanda Kolwich, our Manager of Member Engagement, spent the evening in good conversation with ecosystem mentors and founders, including NPC members YEW Healthy Aging Nutraceuticals (Altheda), ALT PRO Advantage, 7 Fathoms Skin Care and Smallfood Inc., along with Emergence Mentor, Don Ridley. NPC looks at this sector through a national lens, and that is exactly why regional relationships matter to us. Organizations like Springboard and Emergence see companies early and up close, often well before they show up on a national radar. That is how we find them, and how they get support that fits where they actually are in their journey. Thank you to Springboard Atlantic and Emergence for putting both events together. (f ya) - and my favourite part: got to connect with some of my favourite humans in an industry that brings me so much joy!!! Every CHFA feels like a little marker of how far Popoff has come! Couldn't do it without the village that supports these little heart whispers of mine! Big things are coming!!!!! 🚀

Ted Fleming liked thisTed Fleming liked thisWait for it…. Ehm,… We didn’t win, but it’s an honor to be nominated (again). Frankly, we still have so much to do and still highly imperfect - I think it would have felt a bit too soon to actually win this. My vision and the journey for our company - our team - is only just beginning.

Ted Fleming liked thisTed Fleming liked thisOn Friday I judged CHFA Launch Pad at CHFA NOW Toronto with Isabèle Chevalier of NAD Capital and Steve Hollingsworth of Nature’s Emporium. Congratulations to HER dailys on winning Most Innovative Product (the babies on stage were a real highlight!), and to every finalist, including our NPC members MOOZ and Suna Wellness. A seat at the judges’ table gives you a close look at where this industry is heading, and three things stood out from Friday and the #CHFANOW exhibitor hall. • The best pitches started with the problem, not the product. Many of these founders built what they couldn’t find for their own families, and that connection is something buyers can feel. • Evidence is becoming the price of entry. Whether it’s women’s health, fibre or the microbiome, the brands getting traction are the ones that can back up their claims. That matters, because consumers and retailers are both asking harder questions. • Canada is building the organic health and wellness category, not following it. From The Greenhouse to the main aisles, I saw research-driven, Canadian-made products that can hold their own anywhere. I’m especially proud of the 13 NPC-supported member companies in The Greenhouse: 7 Fathoms Skin Care, Altheda, BLUENOSE Probiotics, CAFFUP (Xavier Bonneau), Drink Glimmer Wine, GreenVeil, greens and beans, Heyru (Joseph Edogbeni), MOOZ, Naturfect Natural Solutions, Simply Go Natural Cosmetics Inc., Stirjoy, and Toothpod. Now for the honest part. Too many brands stall right after a show like this, in the valley of death between a promising product and a business that funds its own growth. That’s why at NPC we pair tailored advice and curated connections with smart capital from $25,000 to $5 million. Thank you to CHFA for having me on the panel, and to every founder who shared their story with us. See you next year. #CHFANOW #CHFALaunchPad #CdnInnovation #CPG #NaturalProductsCanada

Earlier today, Enwave Energy Corporation CEO Carlyle Coutinho joined Jon Norman (Hydrostor), Jack Tasker (Bruce Power), and Rob Nicholson (RBC Capital Markets) at DOKAINISH BUILD ’26 to discuss the investments, partnerships, and infrastructure needed to support Canada’s growing energy and economic ambitions. Carlyle’s remarks underscored key factors that will determine the success of Canada’s energy and economic future: • 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 & 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 – especially in supply chain management and adaptive technology deployment given ever-evolving market conditions; • 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙮 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙮 & 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨 to realize electricity system cost-effectiveness, keep supply and demand growth balanced, and remove barriers that obscure the value of local energy resources to support new load; and • 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 – like that between Enwave and City of Toronto / Toronto Water for Toronto’s Deep Lake Water Cooling system – that enables innovation that delivers more affordable, reliable, clean energy outcomes.
