The RevOps rabbit hole is real. It usually starts with a reasonable goal: "Let’s support different pricing for different vendors in HubSpot CPQ." From there, things escalate quickly. A team begins modeling: • Multiple pricebooks • Vendor-specific pricing logic • Conditional associations • A future-proof quote-to-cash setup that can handle every hypothetical scenario On paper, it looks sophisticated. In reality, it’s a classic case of over-engineering. In one recent example, the entire problem could be solved with one additional SKU. No new pricebooks. No complex data model. No fragile automation to maintain. Just one SKU. This is where teams often get stuck. RevOps professionals spend all day advising clients to: • Start simple • Avoid building for edge cases • Optimize for clarity over flexibility And yet, when it’s their own systems, those same traps appear: • Complexity feels like progress • "Scalable" becomes a reason to overbuild • The tool’s full capability gets mistaken for what’s actually required The lesson isn’t that advanced models are bad. They’re just rarely the first answer. Most quote-to-cash problems don’t need more structure, they need the smallest possible change that solves today’s problem. The rabbit hole will always be there.
