Up to this point we have always been able to play Minecraft on the Switch with up to 4 players, using Joy-Con pairs (4 pairs, 8 individual controllers). I mean local multiplayer, split-screen on a single Switch - not talking about networked play. Multiplayer has worked normally, as expected.

But last time this error message appeared:

Minecraft local wireless play error - game controller required

Game controller required

While in local wireless play, no more than two Pro Controllers or one Joy-Con (L)/(R) pair can be used. Please turn off all extra controllers.

Here's the thing... we never meant to be in "local wireless play". Where is the setting for this - and is it a setting within Minecraft or a setting of the Switch itself? Not sure if someone in the household enabled local wireless play by accident, but if it got enabled it wasn't intentional.

I tried going to the screen for pairing controllers, but changing the pairing did nothing to resolve the issue. Haven't been able to find the setting that needs to be changed.

  • Have you started another game in local wireless mode recently? Is there another Nintendo Switch connected to the same wifi? Commented May 10 at 9:31
  • @pinckerman Thanks for asking. To my knowledge, no other game has been started in local wireless mode recently. To my knowledge... There is no other Switch connected to the WiFi. Commented May 10 at 10:05
  • Have you tried starting Minecraft with a different profile? Commented May 10 at 10:07
  • @pinckerman No, but I'll give it a try when I can, and report the results. (Saved worlds are on the primary profile, so def want to get that one working - but yes, testing this could be useful for troubleshooting purposes.) Commented May 10 at 11:48

@pinckerman Good question... I would like to send some rep your way. :-) But since I'm not sure the problem and solution are reproducible, I also hesitate to present this to the world as the solution just yet. Maybe after some testing and/or getting feedback from other users if this worked for them, then I think we could conclude that switching profiles is the way to go. How about: post an answer, and let's see if we get comments from others saying it worked for them. (Or maybe you or I will figure out a way to reproduce the problem/solution.) If so, I will accept that answer. Commented May 11 at 9:53

If this used to work everytime, I don't think it's a real problem.
Probably the active profile just activated local wireless play by mistake, try changing profile and start Minecraft with another one.

You can turn off Multiplayer in World Settings, and that should turn off LAN while also allowing Split screen Multiplayer.
