Early life[]

Dormammu and his younger twin sister, Umar, were born untold thousands—or perhaps even millions of years ago in the dimension of the powerful energy beings known as the Faltine.^[13][14] Unlike their kin, they defied Faltine tradition by gathering matter to themselves. Their actions ultimately led to the death of their parent, Sinifer, after which they were exiled by their fellow Faltine. Wandering across dimensions, Dormammu and Umar continued to amass matter, incorporating it into their very beings. Their search eventually led them to the Dark Dimension, a vast realm with natural warps into pocket universes. Believing it ideal for their ambitions, they used their accumulated matter to assume permanent humanoid forms.^[15] At that time, the Dark Dimension had been at peace for nearly 28,000 years, ruled by the wizard-king Olnar the First in its 28th cycle.^[16] Despite warnings from the Mhuruuks, his mystical advisors, Olnar welcomed Dormammu and Umar, offering them power in exchange for knowledge of how to break dimensional barriers and absorb other realms into his own. During the 29th cycle of Olnar's rule, Dormammu led him whether by design or chance to the realm of the Mindless Ones, unstoppable creatures of pure destruction. The Mindless Ones rampaged through the Dark Dimension, killing Olnar and many of his people.^[17] Seizing the opportunity, Dormammu and Umar drove the creatures back and sealed them away. In the ensuing chaos, they eliminated most of the Mhuruuks,^[15] securing their rule. Hailed as saviours, they were declared regents of the Dark Dimension, with Olnar's infant son, Orini, left alive under their care as he posed no threat. As ruler, Dormammu partially reverted to his original Faltine form, his body wreathed in flames. He then merged his essence with the Dark Dimension's inherent mystical energies, magnifying his power to unprecedented levels.^[17][15]

Not much is known about Dormammu's early reign. Since the denizens of the Dark Dimension have millennia-long lifespans and exist in a universe where time may not flow as it does on Earth, estimating the duration of his activities is nearly impossible. He waged wars against various extradimensional rulers while forging alliances with others, including a pact with Odin of Asgard. He even joined forces with the embodiment of Eternity to seal away the occult juggernaut Zom within a netherworldly amphora. Although direct clashes between Odin and Dormammu are rare in the modern Marvel Universe, Loki once claimed that Odin spoke of Dormammu in terms of comparison to himself—contrary to Dormammu's belief that Odin would regard him with "dread." Dormammu's power, when amplified by the Evil Eye, was sufficient to nearly collapse Earth-616 by merging it with the Dark Dimension, demonstrating his capacity to threaten entire realities given enough strength.^[18]

He seemingly observed Earth's dimension for millennia and supposedly influenced Satannish's development in ancient prehistory. Dormammu frequently clashed with Agamotto (the entity who became Earth's first Sorcerer Supreme) and his unnamed tentacled alien disciple.^[1]

Dormammu's knowledge extended to cosmic beings like the Celestials and Zeus, once boasting that he would "burn" the former while claiming his power equaled that of the latter.^{[citation needed]} He also recognized the skill of ancient Atlantean sorcerers, abandoning the Hood in favor of Jennifer Kale—acknowledging her training under Dakimh the Enchanter. The Tome of Zhered-Na explicitly warns sorcerers against succumbing to Dormammu's temptations, implying that even Zhered-Na and the mages of Atlantis were aware of his existence and the threat he posed.^{[citation needed]}

Throughout history, powerful artifacts such as the Eye of Agamotto and the enigmatic Staff of One^[1] (wielded by the Minorus, evokers of the Nisanti demon (and thus indirectly channeling Dormammu's own power)^{[citation needed]} have been used against him. However, true defeat eluded him, and over time, he ascended among the ranks of mystic entities whose patronage was sought by mortal sorcerers.

When Umar descended into madness after bearing a daughter with Orini, Dormammu used deception to banish her to a pocket dimension, securing his position as the sole ruler of the Dark Dimension. Orini, completely devoted to Dormammu, raised his daughter Clea in service to the Dread One.^[1]

1666[]

In 1666, Dormammu sought to conquer Earth once more, using the "Great Fire of London" to fuel his dark magic. By draining the life-force of the victims, he planned to open a portal at Stonehenge that would link Earth to his Dark Dimension. However, his scheme was foiled when the Sorcerer Supreme, Yao, confronted him. With his mastery of mystic arts, Yao used powerful spells to force Dormammu back into his dimension, preventing the merger of the two worlds and thwarting the dark entity's ambitions.^[19]

1692[]

In 1692, Hiram Shaw was Earth's Sorcerer Supreme and the Reverend of Salem Massachusetts, having taken the position after the previous reverend was banished for witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. Shaw disapproved of his son Obadiah Shaw's relationship with Abigail Harkness, whom he believed to be a witch. One night, Dormammu summoned Shaw, warning him that his lust for power would doom his family. The dark entity offered protection in exchange for Shaw's submission, but Shaw refused. Upon returning home, Shaw found his wife dead and blamed Abigail, having her arrested for witchcraft and murder. Abigail was sentenced to death, but Obadiah freed her, and they fled Salem. Shaw sent a mob after them, only for Abigail to reveal her powers and kill the townsfolk with a blast of fire, leaving only Shaw alive to face the consequences.^[20]

1700's[]

In the early 18th century, Dormammu sought to invade the Earthly realm once again but was confronted by the latest Sorcerer Supreme; Sir Isaac Newton. Renowned for his scientific genius, Newton was also a master of the mystic arts. Combining arcane knowledge with mathematical precision, he successfully repelled Dormammu, preventing yet another incursion into the earthly realm.^[21]

1860[]

In 1860, during the Second Opium War, the British and French forces united against China. However, the Five Weapons Society sworn protectors of China stood against the British Army. In a battle in Shanghai, a British sorcerer named Baron Harkness summoned Dormammu's Mindless Ones from the Dark Dimension, causing the deaths of several Deadly Warriors and leaving Zheng Yi mortally wounded. Using the Eyes of the Dragon, Zheng Zu tried to restore his younger brother's power and vitality at the cost of his own life. However, Yi, unwilling to leave the Society leaderless, reversed the spell, sacrificing himself and rejuvenating Zu. This restored Zu's strength and youth, enabling him to defeat both Harkness and the Mindless Ones.^[22]

1888[]

In 1888 AD, Dormammu's attempts to break the barrier between the Dark Dimension and Earth remained futile. Seeking an alternative route to exert his influence, he used his formidable power to corrupt an individual, steering them toward a path of violence and insanity. This manipulation gave rise to the infamous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper , who became the vessel for Dormammu's twisted agenda. The brutal killings, known as the Whitechapel Murders, struck terror into the heart of London, and Dormammu used these horrific events to spread fear and chaos, destabilising Earth further. Thn.^[19]

WWII[]

In 1943, Dormammu brought the dark sorcerer Baron Mordo, a former disciple of the Ancient One, into his service, cementing their pact through the tragic sacrifice of Mordo's mother and grandfather. In October 1944, the Eye of Agamotto was stolen by Nazi operatives and delivered to the Red Skull. In his attempts to wield the amulet's power, the Skull inadvertently opened a portal to the Dark Dimension. When Captain America and Bucky wrestled the amulet from the Skull, the villain bargained with Dormammu for power in exchange for its retrieval, but the Ancient One sent Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos to aid Captain America and Bucky. The Skull sought to bargain with Dormammu for greater power, but Dormammu scornfully dismissed him.^[23] Later that year, the sorcerer Terdu, aligned with Dormammu, led a group of time-displaced criminals, including Jack the Ripper, against Captain America and Bucky.^[24] Later Baron Mordo and his grandfather, Viscount Krowler, use a Ghost Machine in Wundagore Castle to raise an undead Nazi army. However, Mordo's true goal is to tear open reality and free Dormammu from the Dark Dimension, in exchange for rulership over what remains. Captain America, Bucky, and their allies launch an assault to stop him. As Cap battles Mordo, Sofia Maximoff, a Romany scientist, helps sabotage the machine. Krowler betrays Mordo, but Mordo kills him before completing the ritual. The machine overloads, severing the link to Dormammu and forcing Mordo to flee. Though thwarted, Dormammu remains a looming threat.^[25]

Doctor Strange[]

Eventually, Mordo, with Dormammu's patronage, slowly weakened the Ancient One's power, a plan eventually halted by Doctor Stephen Strange, who became the Ancient One's true disciple and ultimate successor; however, Mordo continued to provide Dormammu with human sacrifices.^{[citation needed]}

During the early days of Strange's as Sorcerer Supreme, he encountered August Wu, this was while he was tracking Dormammu in China. After saving Strange's life, she took him in to recover. Though she wished to join his quest, she remained behind to investigate a newly arrived demonic entity threatening the city. Tragically, she perished in the confrontation.^[26]

In recent years, Mordo, dissatisfied with his progress as a servant of a powerful dark force, sought sacrifices for a mysterious entity known as the 'Great Enigma. His actions attracted the attention of Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, forcing him to flee through a portal—only to find himself before the Enigma, revealed to be none other than his original master. It seemed the name had been used as a test for Mordo's loyalty. However, Strange's interference intrigued his master, raising the question of whether the Ancient One's power was waning, given that only his successor stood in Mordo's way.^[27]

Shortly afterwards, Dormammu sent a ghostly messenger to the Ancient One to announce a renewed intention to conquer the Earth dimension. When Strange traveled to the Dark Dimension in response, Dormammu, surprised that even this challenge did not rouse the Ancient One to action, sent supernatural servitors to bedevil the newcomer.^[28] When Strange bested all comers, Dormammu met him in mystic combat, but Strange proved more powerful than anticipated. As he drew upon the Dark Dimension's energies, Dormammu inadvertently weakened the barrier containing the Mindless Ones and withdrew to force them back. Not wishing Dormammu's subjects to suffer, Strange lent his mystic might to Dormammu, successfully re-sealing the juggernauts. Indebted to Strange for his help, Dormammu felt compelled to end the fight, and Strange made him vow never to threaten the Earth dimension again.^[29] Enraged by this turn, Dormammu swore vengeance against Strange, a grudge which even outweighed his hatred of the Ancient One.^{[citation needed]}

Dormammu soon found a loophole to his vow by granting Mordo more power than ever before, for Strange's murder by a third party would negate the pact. Mordo and his minions hounded Strange across the world for weeks until finally abducting the Ancient One as a bargaining chip to lure Strange to the Dark Dimension. But Mordo's boasting wearied Dormammu, who brought all three Earth sorcerers with him to a neutral realm where, in his own fit of bravado, he summoned the Lords of the Netherworlds, his peers in dimensional domination, to watch him overcome Strange in hand-to-hand combat. However, when Strange seemed to gain the upper hand, Mordo struck him a mystic blow from behind, outraging Dormammu's sense of honor. Banishing Mordo for his troubles, Dormammu faced Strange in a rematch, but fell to his foe's greater familiarity with physical combat. Before the gathered Lords, Strange forced Dormammu's vow to menace Earth no further even by proxy, cementing the Dread One's humiliation. However, Dormammu struck a parting blow by extradimensionally banishing Clea, and then manipulating fellow Nether-Lord Tazza into attacking the sorcerer.^[30]

Driven to mad fury by their grudge, Dormammu, for reasons unclear, dared to challenge the almighty Eternity himself.^[31] Even Dormammu's power was no match for the universal embodiment, who dismissed his foe to the mysterious Realm Unknown, the very dimension where, ironically, Clea now languished. Rallying the demonic Dykkors, banished there by the Ancient One long ago, Dormammu sent wraithlike beings to drain power from the searching Strange, whom he imprisoned. Clea, however, escaped to Earth and mystically influenced Umar, ruling the Dark Dimension in her brother's absence, to free Strange. The sorcerer confronted his nemesis at the very gateway to Earth he meant to enter, only for Dormammu to be paralyzed by the force of his own vow to leave Earth untouched.^[32]

Months later, having reclaimed the Dark Dimension, Dormammu sought a new loophole by possessing the earthborn Strange himself, but met defeat at the hands of Strange and his new allies, the Defenders. Thinking to make Strange's own friends his catspaws, he then allied with the Asgardian god Loki, Odin's foster son, to manipulate the Defenders into obtaining the talisman called the Evil Eye, whose power he hoped to use to merge the Earth dimension and his own. However, Loki was uninterested in sharing power and manipulated the Avengers into also seeking the Eye, sparking the so-called Avengers/Defenders War.^{[citation needed]}

When the two teams discovered the plot, they confronted both menaces and, at the prodding of the mutant Scarlet Witch, the Evil Eye absorbed Dormammu as energy and redirected it at Loki, driving the god from the scene and insane. During this time, it is revealed that Dormammu also appears to possess knowledge of Uatu (having watched the Sol system for billions of years and thus having existed as long or nearly as long as Dormammu has) and his function even before the two first met^[33], and Uatu appeared to know him as well. Though Uatu's presence in the Dark Dimension, as well as his passing Dormammu's magical defenses, shocked and intimidated even Dormammu, despite his possession of the Evil Eye, he was willing to battle even Uatu if the Watcher intervened. A spark of Dormammu's consciousness remained, and with Umar's help, he was reborn on Earth itself. Having thus cheated his vow, and doubtless buoyed by the Ancient One's recent death in battle with the monstrous demon Shuma-Gorath, Dormammu was nonetheless betrayed by Umar and banished by Strange, now Sorcerer Supreme, and the earth-spirit Gaea.^[34] A subsequent gambit, pitting Strange against the demonic Ghost Rider and the ghostly Bounty Hunter, met no better success.^[35]

As a new tack, Dormammu allied with Doctor Doom to channel the power of the mysterious mystic confluence called the Bend Sinister, with Doom's pawn Lucius Dilby attempting to use Strange as a human sacrifice. However, Spider-Man disrupted the ritual, freeing Strange but leaving Dormammu no worse off than before. Perhaps reminded of Mordo's defeat years earlier by Strange and Spider-Man, after ritually maintaining universal balance in a chess match with Odin, Dormammu subtly directed Mordo to time-travel to 1943, where Mordo's grandfather Viscount Krowler, his death still months away, absorbed that era's the power of that era's Mordo. Krowler's Dark Cabal then prepared to grant Dormammu access to Earth by channeling the terror and hatred provoked by Nazi bombings of England. Fortunately, Strange followed Mordo into the past and won the help of Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos; Dormammu was given little time to jog his memory regarding the Commandos when Strange and Fury disrupted the ceremony, scattering Dormammu's mystic essence throughout time and space.^[36]

Months later, Strange, following his own arduous confrontation with Shuma-Gorath, healed himself via processes that took him through various dimensions; unknown to Strange, a portion of the incorporeal Dormammu attached himself to his foe during one such passage and, when Strange returned to Earth, possessed the sorcerer's body as he had first planned years before. Possession of a human body exempted Dormammu from his vow, and he summoned extraterrestrial sorcerers, including Agamotto's now-renegade tentacled disciple, as his lieutenants. Dormammu vowed to oust the unfathomable Celestials themselves as the greatest power in the Earth dimension, but Strange, his consciousness having fled into a rat, lured Dormammu into blasting him with mystic power, enabling him to rebuild his astral form while his ally Topaz exorcised Dormammu's presence.^[37]

Undaunted, Dormammu returned to the Dark Dimension, luring Strange by unleashing the Mindless Ones upon Earth, then trapping him in helpless symbiosis with Clea. Perhaps in nostalgia, he invited Umar to share his reign once more, then banished her anew when she predictably turned against him. Dormammu's invasion of the Earth dimension met unlikely resistance from Baron Mordo, at last weary of Dormammu's abuses and hoping to claim Earth for himself. As Strange and Clea freed themselves, Umar, with Mordo as her champion, forced Dormammu into a compromise, promising him his own dimension to begin anew but neglecting to mention it was that of the Mindless Ones, who were as eager to assault Dormammu in their domain as they had been in his.^[38] Umar claimed rulership of the Dark Dimension, with Mordo as consort, but soon Dormammu, in the guise of the Faltine Flyx, lured Clea into gathering mystic allies among the Lords of the Netherworlds to depose her mother. This freed Dormammu to reclaim his realm, becoming more powerful than ever before. Strange, although greatly weakened after losing much of his own power by renouncing the Principalities who patronized him, confronted him alongside a new team of Secret Defenders. Giddy with power, Dormammu gloated that humanity's own evil nature, demonstrated by the horrors of the very wartime era in which he had fought Strange and Fury, proved its need for his rule, then contemptuously dismissed his enemies^[39] and, soon afterward, allowed Strange and the human-alien hybrid Darkhawk to seal a breach between the Dark Dimension and Earth's technological Cyberspace, indulgences he doubtless regretted later.^{[citation needed]}

When the Guardians of the Galaxy, heroic adventurers from the 31st century of Earth-691, traveled to the modern era of Strange's Earth-616, Dormammu, on a whim, followed them back to their home era and attacked their Drydock headquarters, demanding the presence of Doctor Strange, himself known as the Ancient One in the Guardians' era. The future Strange and his disciple, the alien Krugarr, rose to the challenge, but neither Krugarr, the Guardians, nor their associates the Galactic Guardians could prevent Dormammu combining his own power with that of his future counterpart, from slaying Strange at last. However, careless from his victory, Dormammu allowed himself to be overwhelmed when the Guardians unpredictably teleported him throughout their ship and attacked him in succession with non-mystic powers unfamiliar to him, forcing him to return to his home time and realm.

Whether as a result of his travels through time or of the reality-altering War of the Seven Spheres, Dormammu, despite victory over not one Doctor Strange but two, suffered severe power loss, reducing him to a humanoid husk while Clea led a rebellion against him. Retaining his throne but slow to recover his power, Dormammu bound his essence to a minor demon, Underchild, to enter the Earth dimension unnoticed, where he manipulated the mutant Jonathan White into granting mystic power to others, strengthening his master via millions of worshippers. Although Doctor Strange soon ended this gambit, the revitalized Dormammu launched his most ambitious scheme yet in a war against the demons and death-gods that governed Hell itself, through which he planned to reach Earth. With Satannish as his lieutenant, he captured two-fifths of his targeted regions but was driven out by the united power of his adversaries, rallied by the heroine Hellcat.^[40] Dormammu's own realm suffered attack by the vastly powerful Archenemy, whom even the Mindless Ones could not overwhelm, forcing his own alliance with Mephisto and dozens of other demonic rulers of the so-called Splinter Realms before the creature was finally destroyed by the sorceress Magik (Amanda Sefton), but not without severe damage to all realms involved.^[41]

Perhaps hoping to recoup his losses, Dormammu attacked the Earth dimension once more. Strange again scattered Dormammu's essence throughout the dimensions, but Dormammu, anticipating this ploy, released the Mindless Ones on Earth; when Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four used his technology to force the Mindless Ones back, he inadvertently drew Dormammu back to Earth. Strange nevertheless defeated him, daring to tamper with time itself to ensure victory, but Dormammu resurfaced months later, driven to irrationality and speaking of a childhood and parents he had never had. Umar humored him while, via a shift in the Cosmic Axis, the pair's power increased to such an extent that they were able to overwhelm Eternity entirely. Immersed in Eternity's essence, Dormammu re-made the Earth into his own hellish domain, with a Doctor Strange doppelganger as his lackey; his endeavors were opposed by the true Doctor Strange and the Defenders, but ultimately it was Umar, having taken a liking to the Hulk, who thwarted him, claiming his power for her own and restoring Earth. Dormammu was apparently reduced to a ranting human, but there is little doubt he will return.^{[citation needed]}

The Hood[]

With his full essence having been banished by Doctor Strange, Dormammu was limited to manifesting on Earth through a mortal host. One of the many cults who sought to invoke his powers used a bonding cloak to summon his essence into a sub-human host, hoping it would limit Dormammu's power and make him manageable. Dormammu was too much for them however. He killed them all, and began searching for a worthy host, requiring a driven and capable human who could handle his power.^[42]

Sensing young criminal Parker Robbins, Dormammu found the host he was looking for. He got in his path, prompting a frightened Robbins to kill his animal host and steal the cloak of bonding, unwittingly inviting Dormammu's essence into him. Much time went by before Dormammu made his presence known to Robbins, now calling himself the Hood. He aided Robbins in his endeavour to unite the criminal underworld, allowing Robbins to call upon his power, unaware that every time he accepted Dormammu's help, he brought Dormammu deeper into the world.^[42]

Dormammu finally revealed himself as the demon behind the Hood's powers during the Skrull invasion, granting him the ability to see through the disguises of the Skrulls.^[43] Upon realizing what Dormammu was, Hood attempted to stop using his powers. However, the pressures he faced while leading his gang prompted him to stop resisting and give in to Dormammu.^[42][44]

X-Infernus[]

While in Limbo, the recently resurrected Illyana Rasputin attacked various other demons looking for her soulsword and the original bloodstone amulet. This did not go unnoticed by Mephisto, Blackheart, Satannish, Dormammu, and Hela.^[45]

Dark Reign[]

Dormammu tasked the Hood with finding Doctor Strange and usurping his position as Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange fell to the power of the Dark Dimension, forcing the New Avengers to reach him and battle Dormammu as the fight for the new Sorcerer Supreme continued. Dormammu later assaulted the New Avengers, Doctor Strange and Daimon Hellstrom directly in the Earth dimension, only to find Brother Voodoo bearing the Eye of Agamotto to come forth and intervene against him. Dormammu was exorcised from Parker through the joined efforts of Doctor Strange, Daimon Hellstrom and Brother Voodoo. He was banished to his own Dark Dimension once again, having failed to rise as the Sorcerer Supreme or destroy the chosen one. Loki enigmatically offers to aid the Hood afterwards.^[46][47]

Dormammu was interested in the zombie virus, thinking it as a perfect weapon to make his conquest of Earth far easier, with the Sorcerer Supreme having erected defensive magical screens around the dimensional boundaries to bar him from directly acting on the plane, and commanding the Hood to secure it. Later, when Jennifer Kale became terrified at the sight of the zombie virus mutating into an airborne form, Dormammu appeared before her, and offered her his power.^[48] Kale eventually accepted his power when the situation appeared hopeless and the Man-Thing fell, with the Hood forsaken.^[49]

Suitor to Satana[]

Dormammu was one of the five demons who wanted to marry Satana Hellstrom, and like the other demons went out on two dates with her to prove that he had the best chemistry with her. Satana did not want to be forced to marry any of the demons and so went to Deadpool for aid, since Doctor Strange was busy. Deadpool went to kill the demons (who disguised as geeks), when he was greeted by Dormammu (who was using the alias of Mark) he sliced his head off, however upon the reveal that the five "geeks" were in fact demon lords, Dormammu's head reattached to his body and he revealed his true form, Deadpool questioned why the "big shot demons" would want to marry Satana when they could get all the women they wanted, and they explained that the one who married Satana would be given Hell as property, as she was heir to Hell. After asking about how the demons knew so much about pop-culture, Deadpool fled in terror. The five demons decided to gamble to decide who would marry Satana, and the winner was Asmodeus, much to the annoyance of Dormammu. However this proved perilous to Asmodeus, as Deadpool killed him with magic imbued swords, and thus Satana did not have to marry anyone. After Deadpool defeated Asmodeus, Satana noted that he was lucky that it was not Dormammu who had won the gamble, otherwise things would have ended far differently.^[50]

Devil's Advocacy[]

When the Serpent awoke, the Devil's Advocacy was crowded with demons vying for a place around Satan's vacant throne. Among the many Hell-Lords staking their claim, Dormammu stood as one of the contenders.^[51]

Mindless Plague[]

After the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had taken down the Magic Bullet factory with the help of Scarlet Witch, one of their own - Fitz - was revealed to be under Dormammu's Mindless Plague, he used a magic bullet to shoot Scarlet Witch, allowing Dormammu to tap into her Chaos Magic and spread the Mindless Plague to many people, both normal and superhuman alike, from most intelligent to least intelligent.^[52]

The plague spread across the Earth with no magician around to stop it, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents headed to get Doctor Strange's help, having a new team of Howling Commandos composed of the least intelligent heavy hitters hold the line. The agents arrived in the Dark Dimension, and found that Dormammu had captured Strange. After trying to use a magic bullet against Dormammu and failing, they brought in the Absorbing Man to hold back Dormammu, having him take on the properties of Dormammu's Black Dechantment throne to resist him. Absorbing Man was then tricked into destroying Dormammu's throne, ending the plague as the agents escaped back into their own dimension. However, the backlash sucked the new Howling Commandos into the Dark Dimension, where they repeatedly attacked the incapacitated Dormammu before they were rescued.^[53]

Squirrel Girl[]

When Loki became Sorcerer Supreme, Dormammu watched the new champion of Earth from afar. When Squirrel Girl sought Loki help to find Nancy Whitehead, Dormammu dragged them both into his dimension.^[54] To escape, they unleashed a horde of ghost squirrels to overwhelm him.^[55] Later, Dormammu aided Melissa Morbeck in assembling Squirrel Girl's past foes wanting revenge.^[56] Morbeck and the villains exposed Doreen's identity, destroyed her home, and hijacked Iron Man's armor.^[57] Dormammu joined the villains in battle, but the Avengers and a group of reformed criminals came to her rescue.^[58] As they battled Galactus intervened, imprisoning the villains, though Dormammu escaped.^[59]

T. Hothrun[]

Dormammu, masquerading as "T. Hothrun," a multiversal auditor, is revealed as the architect behind Stephen Strange's recent hardships, orchestrating a series of attacks to weaken him ahead of an impending invasion.^[60] Upon uncovering the deception, Strange, with Clea's assistance, confronts Dormammu in a fierce battle, ultimately driving him back. Though defeated, Dormammu's schemes leave lasting consequences, forcing Strange to repair the damage left in his wake.^[61]

The Last Annihilation[]

In a bid to steal power from Dormammu to empower himself in preparation for the Reckoning War, Doctor Doom orchestrated a venue for Dormammu to invade Earthspace.^[62] Sister Talionis manipulated Ego the Living Planet into joining the cult of the Brethren of the Forgotten Flame and conducted a self-sacrificial ritual that encased him in a black shell.^[63] After days of incubation, Ego hatched from the egg possessed by Dormammu.^[64]

Dormammu is considered more powerful than Lucifer, Marduk, Mephisto, and Satannish and apparently served as the creator of the latter.^[9] Dormammu is of sufficient skill and might to tamper with the spells of Odin against his will, as the Lord of the Dark Dimension did once to revert Thor back to his mortal guise.^[66] Dormammu had sufficient magical power to hold his own against clashes with Agamotto (a spawn of one of Earth's Elder Gods with power enough to stalemate Galactus) when the latter served as the Marvel Universe's first Sorcerer Supreme, even aided by an alien disciple; to this day, the Vishanti regard him as their prime enemy and that of the Sorcerer Supreme. As a representative of Lord Chaos, Dormammu also held the upper hand in a formal game of cosmic chess against Odin, who was representing Master Order, but it ultimately ended in a draw as Odin wished.^[18] According to Loki, Odin speaks of Dormammu as an equal, whereas Dormammu considers Odin as an inferior.^[66] He has even dared to directly challenge Eternity itself, and in one case even overcame the entity.^[67] Dormammu even claims that he will destroy the Celestials, burning them in the Flames of the Faltine.^[68] However, there are still limits to his might. For example, the demon known as Zom has been referred to as more powerful than his sister Umar, and thus possibly himself (although his power has increased greatly on a few occasions since then); and after he had effortlessly defeated all the Avengers and Defenders combined, including Thor and Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch used a hex on the Evil Eye of Avalon, to make it absorb the overconfident and distracted Dormammu.^[33]

From Strange's lone duels with the fallen Faltinian being to his conflicts with him aided by the Defenders and other allies, Dormammu, frequently displays enough power to "ravage a cosmos" and destroy the entire Marvel Universe. Dormammu's power combined with the magic of the Evil Eye was enough to destroy an entire reality, invading not only Earth, but the Sol system, and the worlds of the Kree, the Skrulls, the Badoon, the Titans, Warlock and other "off-worlders." Dormammu even claims his Flames of the Faltine are powerful enough to enable human sorceresses baptized with them to destroy any zombie with a thought, while a thousand separate realities have all fallen to the zombie infection and it is deemed virtually incurable. Dormammu's full powers combined with those of Umar's were enough to overwhelm Eternity and actually tap into his powers to alter all of reality itself into one in his own image, Earth-5113.^[67]

• Sorcery over the Flames of the Faltine: Dormammu is composed of pure mystic energy, eclipsing even the greatest of sorcerers in terms of raw power and the ability to manipulate the forces of magic, including Doctor Strange and the Ancient One. Dormammu is virtually indestructible and immortal due to his energy form composed of raw magical energy which is increased and replenished, at least partially, by worship throughout various dimensions. Dormammu has also shown himself capable of besting wielders of the Phoenix Force.^{[citation needed]}
• Banishment: Dormammu can banish all from his domain (the Dark-Dimension) but usually opts to fight them.^{[69][verification needed]} Dormammu once was capable, even in Earth's dimension, where his powers decrease, of imprisoning the Elder Goddess Gaea at the center of the Earth; it took Clea, adept apprentice of the Sorcerer Supreme using a complex spell fueled by the combined power of Zom and Oshtur to release Gaea from Dormammu's magic, and it took Gaea the joined force of all the spiritual essences of the Earth's living beings to banish him.^{[citation needed]}
• Superhuman Strength: Dormammu possesses some degree of superhuman strength. He is capable of using his magical powers to augment his strength, enabling him to lift well in excess of 100 tons.^{[citation needed]}
• Astral Projection: Among many of his powers, he is capable of inter-dimensional, and near limitless astral projection.^{[citation needed]}
• Matter Transmutations: The ability to alter and shape object in his Dark Dimension to a weapon of his choosing.^{[citation needed]}
• Inter-dimensional Teleportation/Transportation: Creating portal allows him to view and/or step both within or between other dimensions, as well allowing to transport power and object through them.^{[citation needed]}
• High-Speed Flight: Dormammu can use his mystical energy to enable himself to fly at supersonic speeds.^{[citation needed]}
• Transformations: Compose of mystical energy allows him the ability to manipulate himself with relative ease changing his appearance and his size as to cause massive growth.^{[citation needed]}
• Elemental Control: Dormammu can call on the elements, such as fire to do his bidding.^{[citation needed]}
• Summoning: Dormammu can summon minions, such as Demons or the Mindless Ones to help him in combat.^{[citation needed]}
• Time Travel: Though capable of this it seems to drain Dormammu of his powers causing him to not use it.^{[citation needed]}
• Invulnerability: Dormammu is nearly immune to harm from physical, energy, and mystical attacks.^{[citation needed]}
• Size Alteration: Dormammu can increase his size to incredible levels, which greatly increases his strength and durability.^{[citation needed]}
• Intangibility: As a being of pure mystical energy, he can turn intangible.^{[citation needed]}
• Immortality: Dormammu is completely immune to aging. He had lived for thousands or even millions of years and has never aged a day. He also can't be killed by conventional means.^{[citation needed]}
• Regenerative Healing Factor: His race is immune to diseases and toxins and can recover from almost any injury no matter how severe.^{[citation needed]}
• Energy Projection: Manifestations ranging from magical force bolts, beams, waves, and cursed conflagrations to magically-constructed beings, or empowering others to such a point that the empowered one wields power dwarfing even that of a dimension's Sorcerer Supreme.^{[citation needed]}
• Energy Absorption: He can draw upon the power of the entire Dark Dimension, but is somewhat more limited when present in another dimension. He can also absorb energies directed at him.^{[citation needed]}
• Psionics: Dormammu has telepathic and telekinetic powers
• Power Bestowal: Dormammu can give portions of his power to others, as consistently seen with Baron Mordo. He can also create powerful beings at will, such as the Hell Lord Satannish to serve him
• Reality Warping: Dormammu can warp reality to his will. His chess match with Odin was affecting the two beings Master Order and Lord Chaos. He also nearly erased Doctor Strange from existence before in a fight.
• Resurrection: Parker Robbins has recently used the powers of Dormammu to resurrect the villains that were killed by the Scourge of the Underworld (Basilisk I, Bird-Man II, Black Abbot, Blue Streak I, Cheetah, Cyclone I, Death Adder, Hijacker, Human Fly, Letha, Megatak, Mind-Wave, Miracle Man, Mirage, Titania I, and Wraith I) to form a squad that would help him take down the Punisher.^{[citation needed]}

• Super-Genius Intelligence though not Omniscient as he claims^{[citation needed]} he is still considered a Super-Genius.^[70]
• Master Martial Artist:^{[citation needed]} Trained in an extra-dimensional fighting style,^{[citation needed]} Dormammu is a experienced hand-to-hand combatant,^[1] but was once bested by the well-trained, in Martial Arts, human Doctor Strange when neither was using mystic powers.^{[citation needed]}

• Dormammu's magical powers are stated and shown to be weakened when on Earth or in any other dimension not of his own, failing to pierce Earth-616's dimensional boundaries directly from the Dark Dimension when they were secured by the spells of the Sorcerer Supreme; even a temporary dimensional aperture with other dimensions has been shown to weaken him, sapping his mystic prowess sufficiently that the Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth dimension could rival him in direct magical combat.^{[citation needed]}

• Despite Dormammu's enormous power, Minoru's mystical Staff of One has been claimed by the dark wizards the Minorus of the Gibborim-formed Pride to be capable of making him tremble.^[71]

• Mysterium, a metal with powerful antimagical properties, can instantaneously banish Dormammu upon contact.^[62][72]

• Dormammu is a class III demon,^[73] and a Lord of Chaos .^[74][75]
