Whenever I try to visit https://chat.stackexchange.com/, as in just the homepage of Chat, I get taken to the chat error page:

meow error

This is happening on both desktop and mobile, so it's not just my PC. If I try visiting it while logged out though, then I get the landing page, just like I'd expect:

working chat

It's been like this for almost a week. It also appears that I might be the only one impacted by this, since I checked with another user and they weren't having any problems at all. I also couldn't find another meta post for it, which further leads me to believe it's only impacting me or a small subset of users.

I'm lacking a little bit of context on the technical details of the recent homepage changes, so I'll leave it to the Chat team to fix the underlying issue and respond here.

But for now I can give you a workaround to fix it for yourself (this also applies to anyone else who's seeing the same problem; it's not just you).

  1. Append ?tab=all to the homepage URL. So that's one of these:
  2. On that page (which should now be working), click the "All" tab again. Yes, it's already selected. Click it again anyway 😀

Here's why this fixes things:

If the tab is not specified, the home page defaults to whatever tab you clicked on last, and you (and others) seem to have a "clicked last" value that is not handled correctly by the chat code.

By explicitly choosing a tab (that's step 1), you're going to one that actually works, and by actively clicking one (that's step 2) you're replacing the memorized value with one that works.

After this, you should be able to visit the homepage again, even with the blank URL.
