I recently posted a question on SO: How do I use default/system colors for extending my standard UI?

I am asking how to perform a very specific (but presumably, commonly required) task using a particular public library. Ideally, the answer will be a pointer to one particular method or class that I have not found yet.

When I came back to the question, I noticed it had been somehow marked as "open-ended", sporting an explanation box saying

Guidelines for open-ended questions

This question type expands the traditional question-and-answer format and allows for open-ended discussion.

These discussions should:

  • Explore topics in a more conversational and collaborative manner
  • Enrich the conversation with thoughtful, personal insights
  • Include opinions and explain the reasoning behind them
  • Always follow the Code of Conduct

Instead of the usual Answer [your own question] and Add comment button/link, the Replies section now just offers Join the conversation.

What about this question is open-ended? Is there any way I can convert it back into a regular question with the normal Answer button etc.?

You wouldn't be the first or last person to think that Question types are confusing. Commented Jan 4 at 10:49

@francescalus: Oh. I didn't realize I picked a question type in the first place. That might explain why there is a "Best Practices" label on top of my question, another aspect I was wondering about, though. So, is there any way to fix the question, or do I have to post a new one with the Troubleshooting/Debugging type? Commented Jan 4 at 11:03

'For now, unfortunately, the "recommended" method is to suggest that they repost the question and delete the old one.' is the current state of play. Commented Jan 4 at 11:50

As a update, there are no updates to that current state of play; there are no details of when such a migration tool will be available. Commented Jan 4 at 16:18

Since it turned out "pilot error" (selected flow for a wrong question type) I'm voting to close as there is nothing new to be done/discussed... (and we already have enough of "new Q types are confusing" discussions... so we can close as duplicate instead) Commented Jan 5 at 18:09
  • @AlexeiLevenkov I think it makes more sense to close as a dupe since this is very much a problem that can still be reproduced. Commented Jan 5 at 22:54
