A copper chest is a type of chest made of copper. It functions almost identically to a normal wooden chest, except that it oxidizes over time, and copper golems will take items out of it and attempt to store them inside nearby wooden chests.
Like normal chests, two copper chests can merge into a large copper chest if placed next to each other.
Obtaining
[edit | edit source]Breaking
[edit | edit source]A copper chest drops itself only if mined with a stone pickaxe or better. Using any other item to mine a copper chest drops only its contents.

Post-generation
[edit | edit source]Upon creating a copper golem by placing a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern next to a block of copper, a copper chest is generated at the location of the copper block. Both the chest and the golem are spawned with their oxidation state matching that of the block of copper, but do not generate waxed even when a waxed block of copper is used.
Usage
[edit | edit source]
A copper chest placed adjacent to another copper chest joins to create a large copper chest. Two adjacent copper chests merge into a large copper chest even if the two chests have different oxidization levels or waxed states; in such cases, the resulting large chest takes the oxidization level of the least oxidized half, and is unwaxed if one of the two halves is unwaxed.[1]
A player can prevent the formation of a large chest, and place two small copper chests side by side, by sneaking while placing the second chest in Java Edition, pushing a copper chest into place with a piston in Bedrock Edition, or placing the second chest facing a different direction from the first chest.
In Java Edition, copper chests cannot be moved by pistons.
Copper golem
[edit | edit source]If a copper golem is not holding an item, it visits up to 10 copper chests (regardless of their oxidization or waxed status) in sequence to try to take out up to 16 of the first item contained within.
The search area for copper chests from the copper golem's position is 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically.[more information needed]
Container
[edit | edit source]A copper chest can be used as a container and has 27 slots of inventory space, and a large copper chest has twice that amount, at 54 slots.
In the Java Edition interface, the top three rows for a large copper chest correspond to the left half of the copper chest when facing it, and the bottom three rows correspond to the right half. In Bedrock Edition, the top three rows correspond to whichever half was placed first and the bottom three to the other half.
Copper chests open when used. To move items between the copper chest inventory and the player inventory or hotbar while the copper chest GUI is open, drag or shift-click the items. In Java Edition, holding ⇧ Shift and double-clicking while holding an item moves all items of the type clicked on in or out of the copper chest, to the extent that space is available for them. To exit the copper chest GUI, use the Esc control.
A copper chest cannot be opened if there is a conductive block above it (in Bedrock Edition, bottom slabs prevent copper chests from being opened). Solid faces do not prevent copper chests from opening, so the lid of the copper chest can phase through blocks such as bottom-half slabs[Java Edition only], stairs, and non-conductive full cubes such as glass and ice. Cats sitting on copper chests prevent them from opening. Because copper chests themselves are non-conductive, two copper chests can be stacked on top of one another while still allowing the lower copper chest to be opened. Players can open copper chests when they are being hurt (effect of Instant Damage, Poison, Wither, on fire, damaged by other players or mobs, etc.).
By default, the GUI of a copper chest is labeled "Copper Chest"[BE only]/"Chest"[JE only] and the GUI of a large copper chest is labeled "Large Copper Chest"[BE only]/"Large Chest".[JE only] A copper chest's GUI label can be changed by naming the chest in an anvil before placing it, or, in Java Edition, by using the /data command (for example, to label a chest at (0,64,0) as "Bonus Chest!", use /data merge block 0 64 0 {CustomName:'"Bonus Chest!"'}). If half of a large copper chest is renamed, that name is used to label the GUI of the entire large copper chest, but if the named half is destroyed the other half reverts to the default label. If both halves of a large copper chest have different names, the GUI uses the name of the northernmost or westernmost half.
In Java Edition, a copper chest can be "locked" by setting its [NBT Compound / JSON Object] lock tag using the /data command. If a chest's [NBT Compound / JSON Object] lock tag is not blank, the copper chest cannot be opened unless the player is holding an item with the same name as the lock tag's text. For example, to lock a copper chest at (0,64,0) so that the copper chest cannot be opened unless the player is holding an item named "Copper Chest Key", use /data merge block 0 64 0 {lock:{components:{"custom_name":"Copper Chest Key"}}}.
Oxidation
[edit | edit source]Non-waxed copper chests have four stages of oxidation (including the initial normal state). Lightning bolts, and using an axe while sneaking can remove the oxidation on copper chests. Using a honeycomb on a copper chest prevents it from oxidizing.
As the block begins to oxidize (exposed), it gets discolored and green spots begin to appear. As the oxidation continues (weathered), the block is a green color with brown spots. In the last stage (oxidized), the block is teal with several green spots.
Piglins
[edit | edit source]Piglins become hostile toward players who open or break a copper chest.
Christmas chest
[edit | edit source]
From December 24–26, all placed copper chests have their textures changed to "Christmas chests", which look like wrapped Christmas presents. Since the game uses the date stored on the player's computer, players can apply the Christmas chest textures at any time by changing the date on their computer to December 24, 25, or 26. Unlike chests and trapped chests, their item form do not have the Christmas chest texture.
