This feature is exclusive to Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Education.

The Accessibility settings tab, the first tab of the settings menu.
New settings UI, based on Ore UI.[upcoming]

Minecraft's user environment can be configured through the Settings menus. A few additional options can be changed only by editing the options.txt file manually.

The settings menus can be accessed from both the main menu and the pause menu. The "Storage" and "Language" settings tabs are not available from the pause menu, and some options are only changeable in the main menu or the pause menu. For the settings tabs related to game settings in the pause menu, see World Options § Classic UI.

The "Accessibility", all controls, "Video", and "Audio" tabs have a button to reset all settings to the default state, shown on this page.

In Minecraft Preview, options menus are gradually updated with an Ore UI design preview which is likely to be included in the base game in a future update.[1] This adds some visual effects to the options menu, in-game descriptions, more categorization, and preview sounds for the audio tab. As of 26.10.23, the Accessibility, Keyboard & Mouse, Controller, Touch, General, Video, Audio, Account, and Language settings tabs have received the design preview as well as the tabs on the left.

Video

[edit | edit source]
Option Description Default
Graphics Mode Changes the graphics mode. Not available in-game when "Allow In-Game Graphics Mode Switching" is disabled. There are four available options, and a subset of options is shown below depending on the selected mode.
  • Simple. Classic graphics, clouds become opaque and do not fade with fog, leaves do not become snowy, round shadows below entities are not visible, and entity lighting is simplified.
  • Fancy. Classic Minecraft graphics, equivalent to Fabulous! in Java Edition. This uses the same set of settings as Simple.
  • Vibrant Visuals.[note 1] Enables Vibrant Visuals, a deferred rendering mode with PBR textures, biome-configured graphical effects, and dynamic lighting.
  • Ray Traced.[note 2] Enables ray tracing, a graphics mode with dynamic lighting and physically based rendering configured in certain Marketplace resource packs and for creators.

When Vibrant Visuals is selected as the graphics mode, the graphics mode setting shows another option which sets all Vibrant Visuals options to a predefined setting for better performance or visuals. The default settings depend on the device specifications.

  • Favor Performance. Most Vibrant Visuals settings are set to "Low" or "Off" for a better experience on lower-end devices.
  • Favor Visuals. Most Vibrant Visuals settings are set to "Medium" for a higher quality of Vibrant Visuals on higher-end devices.
  • Custom. Vibrant Visuals settings are individually set to custom values in the menu below.
Vibrant Visuals - Favor Performance[note 3]

Fancy[note 4]

Render Distance The render distance controls how many chunks of the world are visible at once. The fewer chunks that are included, the faster each frame can be rendered, resulting in higher frames per second (FPS). This also affects the render distance of foliage such as transparent leaves, crops and animated textures. Available in 2-10 sections on the slider, ranging from 5-96 chunks maximum (depending on the device). The most distant terrain is faded by fog, to avoid a sharp edge to the visible world. This slider is only available when the graphics mode is set to "Simple" or "Fancy".

The maximum render distance available on the slider depends on the device.

Operating system Max render distance
Windows 12, 27, 50, or 96[note 5]
ChromeOS
Android
iOS & iPadOS
Fire
Xbox One 16
Xbox Series X|S 36
Nintendo Switch 12
PlayStation 4 28
PlayStation 5 36
Varies[note 6]
Deferred Render Distance Controls the chunk render distance if Vibrant Visuals is selected as graphics mode. The available settings range as follows per device, with steps of 2:
Operating system Range
Windows 8-28
Android 2-12
iOS & iPadOS
Nintendo Switch[note 7]
Xbox One 6-12
Xbox One X 8-16
Xbox Series X|S 8-28
PlayStation 4 8-16
PlayStation 5 8-28
This can be changed to any value in options.txt. Values below 8 chunks will result in chunks at higher distances not initially loading, but the chunks will not be unloaded until the distance is higher than 8 chunks. Values above 24 chunks will result in the game actually rendering this distance up to 128 chunks away from the player.
See § Default
Ray Tracing Render Distance[note 2] Controls the chunk render distance of ray tracing if "Ray Tracing" is selected as graphics mode. Slider can be set between 5 and 24 chunks, but can be changed to any value in options.txt, similar to Vibrant Visuals. 8 chunks[verify]
Brightness Adjusts the brightness of the game. Dims down or lights up the game's surfaces, even if fully dark. It has no effect on gameplay, it is a visual effect. Works in any dimension and affects the Night Vision status effect. Not available when the graphics mode is set to Vibrant Visuals or Ray Traced. 50
Camera Perspective Toggles camera perspective between regular First Person and third-person view, Third Person Back and Third Person Front. This can also be toggled with F5 or D-pad up by default, or the optional camera perspective button on touchscreen. First Person
Fullscreen Toggles between windowed and fullscreen mode on devices where windowed modes are available, toggleable with F11. OFF
Hide Hand Toggles to hide the player hand and items, but show any other HUD elements, or vice versa and only show the hand.
Hide Paper Doll Toggles the side-view of the player displayed in the top-left corner of the screen during special movements, toggleable with F8.

Splitscreen HUD Opacity[note 8] Changes the opacity of the HUD, while in splitscreen mode.
Change Screen Safe Area Opens a menu with a slider controlling the offset of the corners of the screen, moving the UI elements further inside. Not available in-game. 100.0
FOV Changes the field of view, which can make the screen appear more zoomed in or out. The actual field of view depends on the aspect ratio of the screen. Available options range from 30.00° to 110.00°. 60.00°
Splitscreen[note 8] Toggles between horizontal and vertical orientation of the splitscreen. Horizontal
Show Autosave Icon Toggles the autosave icon in the top-right of the screen. OFF
Outline Selection Toggles facing block highlighting between a black outline or white highlight. OFF on mobile, ON on other platforms
