Thijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostSo much we couldn’t cover, but an accurate portrayal of the ride thus far. Also, my new role as Brand Ambassador is a blast (I write from the train on the way back from Rubycon Italy)!Thijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostImagine raising $22M... after 13 years fully bootstrapped. Here's 5 takeaways from chatting with AppSignal's co-founders about why it was the right time to raise: • Know What Kind Of Founder You Are → Roy realized his superpower was taking AppSignal from 0 to 10, not scaling it to 1,000. So after 13 years he voluntarily stepped back from Chief Customer Officer, stayed on as board member and brand ambassador, and put ego aside for what was best for the company's next phase. The level of candor and clarity he had when we chatted (see the video below) is rare and admirable. • Be Pragmatic About Outside Capital → AppSignal stayed bootstrapped for years because every funding conversation tried to push them into feature bloat, which was the exact opposite of why they built the tool in the first place. They waited until they could raise on their own terms, proving you don’t have to be anti-VC; you just have to protect what makes your business special. • Keep Your Product Simple → In a market full of bloated tools, AppSignal doubled down on deliberate simplicity and “always building from simple primitives” to never let feature creep win. That focus is exactly why users love it and why the company hit millions in ARR bootstrapped. • Culture Is A Competitive Advantage → Roy, Thijs, and new CEO Brandon (who I also spoke with) all pointed to one thing as their biggest moat: a “no-asshole company” culture where customers and the developer community are treated the way the founders themselves would want to be treated. In the age of LLMs, authentic customer love is the ultimate differentiator. • Choose The Right Partners → Once they knew it was time, AppSignal spent a full year vetting partners. They looked for shared vision from folks who wanted to amplify what already existed instead of changing it, with GTM expertise that was missing on the team. That deliberate choice is now unlocking a massive US expansion without losing the soul of the company. AppSignal’s journey proves you can build bootstrapped, stay human, and still reach meaningful scale. If you do that, the opportunity for capital will be there when it’s right for you. If you’re trying to figure out if you’re still in the 0-to-10 stage or staring at your own “what’s next?” moment, AppSignal’s playbook is one of the most clear-minded recent examples of doing it right.

Thijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostThijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostI had an amazing night at RubyFest! We traversed a wide range of topics, from test selection, to creating 2D computer games, to how music works. Plus plenty of time to chat with smart Ruby engineers in Belfast. Bonus! Huge thanks to Nick Schwaderer for organising and big thanks to Stora , AppSignal , GitHub , Ruby Central, Inc. and Adrian Marin 🥑 from Avo for sponsoring. What with Ruby, Python, JavaScript, CTO Craft and many other tech communities, Belfast is punching above its weight nowadays!

Thijs Cadier heeft dit gedeeldRobert is working on some cool stuffThijs Cadier heeft dit gedeeldMy YC startup failed so I built the tool I wish I had: Klime. Here's the story. "Why wouldn't I just do this in Gmail?" Paul Buchheit, the creator of Gmail, was right. We flew to San Francisco for our Y Combinator interview, and in the first five minutes we knew we weren't getting in. Back in Amsterdam, I installed analytics and checked the dashboard every day. Over the next few years we hit 10,000 signups, but we couldn't make them stay. We tracked retention in monthly cohorts, which made everything look fine. By the time churn showed up in the data, it was too late. Once I could see the churn, I still had to find the *why*. No matter how hard I tweaked SQL, I just had to talk to users. I met a hundred of them face to face, asking every annoying detail about how they used our app. It took months. We pivoted 8 times. Got into YC on the second try. Demo Day flopped anyway. We were exhausted. We looked each other in the eye: could we still make this work? Probably not. Our last day as a team, we went out for drinks. I shared the shutdown email to our investors on Twitter. Hours later, my tweet went viral. One reply was from Paul Buchheit, wishing us the best. It taught me the value of community and resilience. It also taught me that most analytics tools aren't built to help you find product-market fit. 📌 TL;DR: What I'd do differently: - Stop tweaking dashboards hoping they'll explain churn. They show what, not why. - Churn sneaks up on you. Track it daily, as a team. - Automate customer outreach so you can keep building while learning. - User feedback is noisy. Find the pattern, define your ideal customer, build for them. - Save product data and conversations in the same place for the whole story. 🧗 So Stefan Borsje and I built Klime: - Simple dashboard: Pre-configured, SDK installed by AI in under an hour. - Slack alerts: Get warned before customers churn, not after. - AI chat: Ask why users churn. Like talking to your users without meeting them. - Email integration: CC Klime to connect conversations to product data. No more silos. - Smart messaging: Draft personalized outreach from actual usage history. Link is in the comments! Wanna try it? DM me or reply.

Thijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostThijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostAs the holidays are upon us and the year comes to a close, we want to say thank you to the AppSignal community. This year was a big one for our team: a new investment from Elsewhere Partners, major product releases like OpenTelemetry support, Kubernetes coverage, our MCP server, and our free plan, along with numerous thoughtful improvements shaped by your feedback. Most importantly, we continued to support teams who are building software and running their environments. We’re grateful for our customers, partners, and community members who make AppSignal what it is, and we’re excited for what’s ahead in 2026. Wishing you a peaceful holiday season and a great start to the new year. 💙

Thijs Cadier heeft dit gerepostThijs Cadier heeft dit gerepost🚀 Excited to launch AppSignal's first Launch Week! This is an experiment for me and for AppSignal, our first real step into product marketing with video content. I kept things intentionally lite: quick highlights of what's new, in just a few minutes, because developers are busy and usually know exactly what they’re looking for. Each launch has accompanying copy that adds more technical context so devs can get to the nitty-gritty quickly. Accessibility is, of course, non-negotiable, with always-on subtitles for those who need or prefer them. And it’s all 100% human. No AI — just me, our Video Producer (Adrián Bartolomé Manzanos), a camera, and plenty of outtakes to prove it. Check it out for yourself 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWjDbixR

Thijs Cadier vond dit interessantThijs Cadier vond dit interessantIt was a great couple of days in Chicago at ElixirConf®. A few highlights from the sessions: AI was a core theme (as you'd expect). LLMs keep getting better at delivering, and Elixir's supervisor/worker model fits the evolving dev world well. Chris McCord's keynote on his own dev process was refreshingly honest (and self-deprecating). His projects are 100% LLM-coded at this point, while he focuses on the "real" engineering problems of structure and context. Long-running sessions, massive prompts. I appreciate the approach. "Let it crash" sounds antithetical to an observability company. But Joe Harrow and Stephanie Lane from Stord had a great musical demo for how the supervisor/worker model treats those crashes as signal. And how an observability platform is needed to understand that signal at scale...and I'll try to convince them that AppSignal is the right option :) And finally, Bart Blast's local-first talk (creator of Hologram) showed off end-to-end development that can improve both efficiency and security. Good, nerdy dinner conversation ensued with a few others. Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, and presenters for a great few days, and to everyone who stopped by to chat. Looking forward to supporting the Elixir community going forward. #ElixirConf

Meet Sharief Mohamed RA, Co-Founder of Huppa: Operating system for gyms and studios in Europe. Certified Accountant. Previously CFO at Lalaland AI and Head of Finance at Otrium. What should the Netherlands do to make startups more successful? "Make it easier to give equity to strong individual contributors who join in a later stage. Right now, payroll taxes directly kick in when there is a valuation. But that valuation might only happen at an exit in the future. So you pay tax directly, but years later (if there ever will be an exit), you get your financial share associated with those taxes." Part of the Vliegwiel portrait series, highlighting 100 Dutch founders and ecosystem builders. Photography by Wesley Verhoeve, assisted by Joseph Frank and Simón Ducos.

🇳🇱 Dutch HealthTech Startups: Stop Losing €600K–€1.2M Every Round 🇳🇱 Every funding cycle, Dutch founders leave hundreds of thousands in non-dilutive capital untouched - simply because they see fundraising as a one-off event instead of a repeatable process. The truth? 💡 It’s not about ideas. It’s about sequence - knowing which grants, programs, and investors to align at each stage of growth. Here’s how the smartest Dutch HealthTech founders build momentum - from early validation to international scaling 👇 🧩 1️⃣ Foundation & Validation Build clinical and technical credibility before equity. 💶 Use: NWO Take-off, Health-Holland PPP, YES!Delft HealthTech, ZonMw, Techleap, Medical Delta. 💰 2️⃣ Early Funding Stack Secure grants and innovation credits before you dilute. 🏦 Programs: RVO MIT R&D, Innovation Credit, VFF, TKI-LSH, Eurostars, ROMs, Invest-NL, Horizon Europe Cluster 1. 🚀 3️⃣ Investor Readiness Turn evidence and traction into investor confidence. 👥 Networks: Thuja Capital, INKEF, Curie Capital, Rockstart Health, Healthy Capital. 🌍 4️⃣ International Expansion Leverage the Dutch innovation brand for global reach. 🌐 Enablers: RVO Go4Export, EIT Health Bridgehead, InnovationQuarter International, NFIA, Holland High Tech. Why it works: ✅ Less dilution - replace equity with public support (2–6 pp saved). ✅ More runway - extend cash by 4–10 months. ✅ Higher valuation - validated traction = faster, larger rounds. #HealthTech #StartupFunding #DutchInnovation #DigitalHealth #NetherlandsStartups #VentureCapital #NonDilutiveFunding #GrantFunding #MedTech #LifeSciences #EUInnovation #FundingStrategy #Growth #PNTB #Betthera

Here’s something I’ve noticed while building ObscuraQ: The top 1% aren’t the smartest. They’re the clearest. Clear on: • their mission • their direction • their leverage • and the exact problems they’re meant to solve AI doesn’t intimidate these people — it amplifies them. Because when you’re clear… you stop seeking approval you stop chasing shortcuts you stop doubting your direction and you start operating with a type of precision most people never experience. Clarity is dominance. AI is leverage. And when you combine the two — you become inevitable. #Entrepreneurship #HighPerformance #AI #PersonalBrand #ObscuraQ

Framer is now a $2 billion company. But 8 years ago, they got stuck at $5 million ARR with no way out. I met Jorn van Dijk and Koen Bok through Ben Blumenfeld. They'd both come out of the early design crew at Facebook. Ben described Jorn showing up on day 1 at Facebook and just opening a can of whoop ass. I couldn't wait to meet him. Soon after, we co-led their seed round. Their first product was a prototyping tool that made iPhone animations incredibly easy to build. Designers loved it. It spread completely organically - designer to designer - with zero sales motion. Then it stalled. Every attempt to scale with a traditional sales approach failed. They got to ~$5M in revenue but at that point, had to confront a hard truth: the product they'd poured themselves into wasn't going to get them where they wanted to go. So they made a "bet the company" call. They decided to build a no-code website builder - entering a space that was already crowded, where Webflow was well underway, but they had a point of view that most of the existing tools were pretty mediocre. It was a true Cortés moment. They burned the boats on the old product - honoring existing customer contracts - and threw everything behind the new direction. What a lot of people miss about pivots like this is that they don't play out in a day or a month. They can take 2 or 3 years to be proven out. And the whole time, you're sitting with the discomfort that the path you've chosen may not work. Revenue went roughly $3M → $9M → $30M → $80M. Having the conviction to walk away from something that's "working" - and sitting with the uncertainty long enough to find the thing actually worth building - is one of the hardest things a founder can do. Jorn, Koen and the Framer team proved it's also one of the most important. We talked through this and a lot more at SXSW. Listen to our full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/g93yuzbi

This is great to see Sean Kenny and Paul van der Boor A lot of people talk about AI, but very few show what it actually looks like when it’s working inside real teams every single week. What really stood out to me in your chart is how long it took for the senior agents to appear. That’s exactly how trust is built in the real world. People start by giving AI the simple jobs. When it shows it can handle those reliably, they slowly hand over the more valuable, more complex work. We’ve watched the same pattern unfold with smart alex At first, companies used it for the basics. Then, after they saw the consistency, they started trusting it with the bigger tasks that impact revenue and operations. That shift always takes time, but once it happens, growth accelerates fast. Your data captures that moment perfectly. It’s a clear sign that AI inside organisations is moving from hype to something real, repeatable and operational.

What do the founders of Remote, HelloPrint, Gain.pro, Miro & Picnic have in common? I wanted to find out. 👀 I've interviewed dozens of founders and C-level operators for my newsletter. Those who run some of the biggest and most successful tech companies in the Netherlands. And I kept hearing similar things. So I used AI to analyse all the interviews and articles I've written – I wanted to find out the common habits and traits they shared. Turns out there are some very clear commonalities. So I'm writing an article called '𝗧𝗵𝗲 7 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀' (they aren't all Dutch, they're NL-based – but that doesn't quite have the same ring to it). Here are the first 3 habits that stood out 👇 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗶𝗴. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹. 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁. Think big, bold and global from day 1 – but execute in tiny steps. They test, ship, make mistakes, learn. Progress, not perfection. 2️⃣ 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿. They ruthlessly protect their time. They eliminate noise: meetings, side quests, nice-to-haves. That focus compounds. 3️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 Most founders I've interviewed are also parents. School runs, bedtimes, summer holidays are part of their operating rhythm. Kids change everything. So they shift work around life, not the other way around. Want the full list with insights and quotes from founders like Marcelo Lebre, Hans Scheffer, Nicola Ebmeyer and more? → Sign up for my newsletter [👉 comments]. Full article drops next week.
