Oli T. shared thisFound out about this resource to help you determine how many external displays can commit to your Mac. I find it funny that this became an issue with the new Apple Silicon MacBooks and combined with the cost of new or refurbished MacBooks is one of the blockers for why I haven’t upgraded since my 2019 Intel MacBook. I tend to use two screens and the clamshell so being limited because I am upgrading seems like a bit of a hurdle.

Oli T. posted thisApple shipped accessibility updates this week worth paying attention to, less for the features themselves than for the order they were built in. Most companies launch AI capabilities first, then retrofit accessibility. Apple did it the other way. VoiceOver now describes photos, bills, and personal records using Apple Intelligence. Voice Control lets you say “tap the purple folder” instead of memorising labels. Vision Pro can drive a power wheelchair through eye tracking, with Tolt and LUCI as the launch partners. The common thread: disability communities involved from the design stage, on-device processing so nothing leaves the device, and interfaces that end up clearer for everyone. Accessibility-first design tends to produce better products. This is a good example of why.

He calls it "AI Psychosis." The phrase caught on fast: a single CLAUDE.md file derived from his observations on LLM coding pitfalls pulled 30,919 GitHub stars in one week, making it the second most-starred repo of the week. The practical takeaway: if you're using agentic coding workflows, having explicit rules files (like CLAUDE.md or .cursorrules) that constrain agent behavior is becoming standard practice, not optional.

Each task runs in its own isolated git branch and working directory, so parallel tasks don't collide. The goal is turning freeform AI interactions into version-controlled, repeatable pipelines. Oli T. posted thisJohn Loeber's essay "Bring Back Idiomatic Design" is back on top of HN today and worth reading if you haven't. His argument: we've traded homogeneous, predictable interfaces for visually distinctive ones, and users pay the cost. After 20 years of online commerce there's still no consensus on how to enter a credit card number. His rule: prefer what's easy to understand over what's visually beautiful. The cost goes beyond usability. When a project prioritises visual distinctiveness over existing patterns and components, accessibility, mobile behaviour, performance, and test coverage tend to go with it. Several things slip at once. The alternative isn't exciting in a Figma handoff. Shadcn, Radix, Chakra, Material UI. They look like templates. But they're accessible by default, mobile-first, tested, and follow patterns users already know. You customise from there instead of rebuilding from scratch. That also makes AI coding tools faster in practice: when your tests are real and your components are predictable, you're not second-guessing generated code. The hard part is that those standards only hold when two things are true: the whole team commits to them from the start, and the client understands what they're paying for and why. Once a project is scoped around visual excitement, accessibility and testing become things you either quietly drop or fight for on every ticket. Writing them into the contract is genuinely difficult in a competitive market. Quote for it properly and you might just lose the job to someone who doesn't. Lovable-style tools don't make this easier. Getting something live in 30 minutes is real and useful. But "live" and "in front of customers getting honest feedback" are different things. Anyway. Oli T. posted thisResponsive web design is one of the best things to happen to the web. The testing workflow, though? Tedious. Open Chrome DevTools. Toggle responsive mode. Click the device dropdown. Switch to mobile. Check something. Switch to tablet. Check again. Switch to desktop. Realise you broke something on mobile when you fixed the desktop layout. Switch back. Repeat, forever. The flow isn't built for quickly swapping between five different widths mid-development. Each switch is a context reset. You lose your scroll position, your mental model of what's broken, sometimes your place in the page entirely. Responsively App solves this by showing multiple viewports simultaneously, with interactions mirroring across all of them in real time. Responsively is a free, open-source browser built for responsive web development. You load your URL once, pick your device sizes, and they all appear side by side. Click a nav menu on mobile and it opens everywhere. Scroll down and every viewport scrolls with you. The time saving isn't just the clicks. It's the mental overhead of not constantly resetting your context. So which sizes should you actually be testing? Responsively ships with 30+ built-in profiles, but those don't always reflect what your users are actually on. BrowserStack publishes a guide to the most common screen resolutions based on real-world usage data — worth looking at before you decide which profiles to run. I used that data to build a set of custom devices and added them directly to Responsively's config file, rather than clicking through the device manager one by one. On macOS the config lives at: ~/Library/Application Support/ResponsivelyApp/config.json Find the customDevices array and paste in your entries. The BrowserStack resolutions are physical pixels, not CSS pixels — what your stylesheet sees is physical resolution ÷ DPR. Also worth noting: 1536 × 864 isn't a weird screen, it's a 1920 × 1080 panel with Windows at 125% scaling. I've put together a GitHub Gist with all 18 viewports across desktop, mobile, and tablet ready to paste in. Link in the comments. Once they're in, you can create named preview suites to load just the sizes you need for a given task. Responsively is free, open source, and works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. 24.8k stars on GitHub at time of writing. It won't replace real-device testing, but it removes a lot of friction from the development loop. Oli T. posted thisI have spent years trying to write shorter code reviews, tighter PRs, and more direct technical docs. Turns out the answer was to drop articles and pretend it's 10,000 BC. Someone built a Claude Code skill called Caveman. It makes Claude talk like a caveman. And it cuts token usage by about 75%. Normal Claude: "The reason your React component is re-rendering is likely because you're creating a new object reference on each render cycle. When you pass an inline object as a prop, React's shallow comparison sees it as a different object every time, which triggers a re-render. I'd recommend using useMemo to memoize the object." Caveman Claude: "New object ref each render. Wrap in useMemo." Same fix. 19 tokens instead of 69. The philosophy from the README: "why use many token when few do trick." And it actually holds up. They ran benchmarks across different kinds of tasks. Average output dropped by 65%. Some tasks hit 87% reduction. The technical accuracy stayed the same. There are a few things about this that got me thinking. First, the filler we've all accepted as normal in AI responses is wild once you see it stripped away. "Sure, I'd be happy to help you with that" is 8 tokens that do nothing. "I would recommend that you consider" is 7 more tokens of nothing. We just got used to it. Second, this is the same lesson I keep relearning in my own writing. The best version is almost always shorter than what you started with. Cutting words doesn't lose meaning. It finds it. Third, the fact that this exists as an open source skill that anyone can install is a good reminder of how much room there still is to shape the way we interact with these tools. I think there's similarities in both of y'all's tools. It’s one of the few spaces where builders, designers, testers, researchers, and community leaders come together with genuine openness — not just to talk about tech, but to talk about people. What stood out most was how deeply the programme centred human‑centred tech, accessibility, digital equity, and community wellbeing. From the keynotes through to the track sessions, the kōrero consistently returned to values, integrity, and the responsibility we carry when shaping digital futures. A few highlights for me: - Norie A. keynote on cognitive diversity and Pasifika innovation — a powerful reminder that diversity isn’t a metric, it’s a capability. - Maia Miller kōrero on accessibility — positioning today’s accessibility features as tomorrow’s breakthroughs. - Lauren Peate Building with AI without losing our values was reassuring and enlightening. - The Community, Culture & Wellbeing track, with speakers Kelsey Hallahan, Gregory Thomas Ng, Tamara Buckland, Rachael Fitzjohn (kudos to Aleisha Amohia for MCing 👏), felt like the beating heart of the day. With 405 people in the room and over 110 talk proposals submitted this year, it’s clear that the appetite for grassroots, values‑driven tech is growing fast. For TOHU PRESS LIMITED, this wānanga reinforced the direction we’re taking — tech shaped by community insight, kaupapa Māori values, and a commitment to equity and accessibility. Spaces like NZ Tech Rally help sharpen that vision and connect with others walking similar paths. Ngā mihi nui to the NZ Tech Rally organisers, speakers, volunteers, and everyone who showed up with honesty and heart. Oli T. liked thisOli T. liked thisMy second visit to NZ Games Fest was amazing 😊 I volunteered again this year, though a bit less intensely this time... despite even taking a day off work for it. But all the effort was definitely worth it! I met so many familiar faces and new interesting people, got inspired all over again to make my own game 😅 and this time I actually did it! I made a small zine-style tabletop RPG about Jobless Stick at a beach during the Sunday workshop. Kind of D&D-inspired, but without complicated mechanics. Mostly focused on storytelling and imagination. Now I’m even thinking about turning it into a tiny quest/adventure ☺️ At the final awards ceremony, I wore a dress this time, and honestly it felt magical 😊 What surprised me most was realizing how much easier it felt to talk to people compared to last year. Back then, by the end of the evening, I was just sitting on a couch wondering how everyone still had social energy left. This year I felt much more relaxed while helping out, and could easily talk to random (but very kind!) people. During my shift, I acted proactively and suggested some ideas (omg). I also committed a couple of other acts of social bravery that Past Me would never have survived, like inviting random friends to take photos together or showing people my funny doodles 😁 It’s been strangely fascinating to notice how my mindset is slowly changing under the influence of local culture and community. Plus, I realized that communication through visual images works really well for me, both at work and in my life! I’m really glad I went to the festival and got to see this progress, because lately I’d been feeling discouraged about my language learning and settling-in progress. Like if I never speak English exactly like a native speaker, then I’ll never fully feel like myself again. But maybe I was waiting for things to become “the same as before,” when actually I should have been waiting for something new instead :) Something different ☺️ #nzgf #nzgf2026 #nzgamemdev #community #adaptation
