This week, we started a new course at Universidade Federal de Itajubá, IESTI05 - Edge Machine Learning Systems Engineering. IESTI05 is a 15-week undergraduate course designed to teach students how to implement AI systems on edge devices, specifically using Raspberry Pi platforms. From Braga to Aveiro, a new wave of semiconductor projects is taking shape in Portugal 🇵🇹 A group of Portuguese companies has started a €10 million project to build a new type of chip for fibre-optic telecommunications, fully designed in Portugal. The project, called Micro Ampere, combines microelectronics with photonics, using light to send data faster while using less energy. Data centres and AI systems use huge amounts of power, so developing more efficient chips has become essential. This project aims to create technology that performs better and reduces energy consumption at the same time. It also shows Portugal’s intention to depend less on major international suppliers and build more of its own advanced technology. Source: https://lnkd.in/d7Qm7B9h When I look a bit closer to what is going on in semicons in Portugal it does look like the country is building an ecosystem around semiconductors. The Portuguese Competence Centre in Semiconductors (POEMS), hosted at INL in Braga, brings together 16 partners from research, academia, and industry. I understand that it’s not just about designing chips. It’s also about packaging, manufacturing, and training the next generation of engineers. There’s also the Microelectronics Agenda, backed by over €67 million, which is helping Portugal move from research to production. I also read about a photonics hub that is being set up in Aveiro to connect researchers and companies, while POEMS is focusing on skills development. If these projects succeed, they could make Portugal a more attractive destination for semiconductor design and packaging. Hopefully creating new jobs and drawing investment from international players 🤞
