I am interested to learn more about the Apollo Docking System. I know that the CM has a Probe that docks to the LM's Drogue. After these two components meet, twelve latches form a solid connection between the two modules, at which point the crew removes the probe and drogue to create a wide open tunnel between the two craft.
When it is time to undock and send the two LM crew to the surface, the probe and drogue must be reinserted to the docking interface. Do the probe and drogue also serve as the airtight seal to the top of each module, or is there a separate closure for those? That is, if the probe/drogue were not reinserted, would the CM/LM have a gaping hole left in the roof?
