Create numpy array from other numpy array

I have this array:

and I need to create a second array from it that is made of the first value of each row:

rows = [[1.00000000e-01], [2.00000000e-01], ...., [5.00000000e+00]]

Is there a one line way to do this? Thanks

Set up a sample array:

In [17]: a = np.arange(10).reshape(5,2)

In [18]: a
Out[18]:
array([[0, 1],
       [2, 3],
       [4, 5],
       [6, 7],
       [8, 9]])

Then depending on the shape of the array resulting from the first value in each row:

In [19]: a[:,0]
Out[19]: array([0, 2, 4, 6, 8])

or

In [20]: a[:,0][:,None] # or a[:,0,None] or a[:,0,np.newaxis]
Out[20]:
array([[0],
       [2],
       [4],
       [6],
       [8]])
