I have a 9-hour overnight layover at Dubai (DXB) on a single Emirates ticket:
SYD → DXB → LHR (arrives 00:45, departs 08:20). Both flights are operated by Emirates and booked under the same PNR.
I’m an Australian passport holder, with a companion from Taiwan. Can I exit the airport to visit the city or get a hotel, or am I restricted to the transit area? Do I need any special documentation beyond my passport and onward ticket?

You can check your flight "status" in emirates website, and then I'm sure it will spam you about opportunities/offers on get out (with the rules, which sometime seems explicitly done for Emirates flights). They are trying to push tourism and not just layover. Commented yesterday

https://www.iatatravelcentre.com:

Nationals of Australia with a normal passport do not need a visa for a maximum of 90 days in a period of 180 days

For citizens of Taiwan:

Passengers must have a valid visa issued by the United Arab Emirates.

Passengers can obtain an e-visa before departure at https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae/HomePage.aspx (for Dubai). Passengers accompanying a "GCC Resident" or a "GCC Citizen" must travel with the sponsor in order to use the e-visa.
