This Salmon Salad is creamy, bright, and packed with fresh dill and lemon. It’s made with canned salmon and a balanced blend of mayonnaise and crème fraîche, similar to a classic tuna salad but with a slightly richer, more delicate flavor.

Perfect for sandwiches, croissants, or crackers, it’s a simple make-ahead favorite that feels right at home at luncheons, showers, and everyday lunches.

Meggan’s Notes

I will always reach for tuna salad first. That is just who I am. But this Salmon Salad surprised me.

Canned salmon can be assertive, but when it is folded with fresh dill, lemon zest, and a touch of crème fraîche, it becomes something lighter and more refined. It still has that familiar deli salad comfort, but the herbs and citrus give it lift.

This is the kind of salad you bring to a bridal shower, a church luncheon, or a summer gathering where croissants are involved and someone always asks for the recipe.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Canned salmon: Practical, affordable, and perfect for make-ahead salads.
  • Mayonnaise plus crème fraîche: Creamy but not heavy, with gentle tang.
  • Fresh dill and lemon zest: Brighten the flavor and soften the intensity of the salmon.
  • Champagne or white wine vinegar: Adds subtle acidity without overpowering.
  • Finely minced vegetables: Provide texture without turning the salad chunky.

At a Glance: Here is a quick snapshot of what ingredients are in this recipe.
Please see the recipe card below for specific quantities.

  • Canned salmon: Use high-quality salmon packed in water for the cleanest flavor. Some brands include skin and bones, which should be removed before mixing. You can substitute about 2 cups of cooked, flaked salmon if desired.
  • Mayonnaise: Provides richness and structure.
  • Crème fraîche or sour cream: Adds tang and lightens the texture. Sour cream is a perfectly acceptable substitute.
  • Lemon juice and zest: Use both for layered citrus flavor.
  • Champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar: A mild vinegar keeps the flavor bright without sharpness.
  • Fresh dill: Essential here. It pairs naturally with salmon and balances the richness.
  • Celery, chives, and shallot: Add gentle crunch and savory depth.

Salmon Salad Tips and Variations

  • Yield: This recipe makes about 2½ cups salmon salad, enough for 4 generous ½-cup sandwiches or 8 to 10 smaller tea sandwiches.
  • Make ahead: Prepare up to 24 hours in advance. Stir gently before serving.
  • Texture preference: Flake the salmon more finely for a smoother spread, or leave larger pieces for a chunkier salad.
  • Tea sandwiches: This recipe makes about 2½ cups total. Use ¼ cup per sandwich for 8 to 10 light tea sandwich portions.
  • Add-ins: Finely chopped capers or a small spoonful of Dijon mustard can add extra complexity.

How to Store Salmon Salad
