As of the new year, my seven years with Pine Tree has come to an end. My wife reminds me every single day that I promised to take some time off, and judging by the streak of green recoveries on my Whoop, it turns out that not working is really healthy for me 🤣 I look forward to lots of tennis, lots of father daughter time, and catching up with many of you on what’s next. I’ve officially been promoted back to slightly below average functioning human being!

Austin Murphy reacted on thisAustin Murphy reacted on thisThis week, I spoke at the MAHA Summit’s VIP reception in Washington, D.C., alongside HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., bringing an O&P/DME perspective to the conversation and highlighting the importance of diabetic foot care. My remarks focused on access to preventive care, and the dire consequences of reaching patients too late. One number puts the stakes in perspective: a 2020 research review found that more than half of patients undergoing a diabetes-related amputation died within five years. I’m the third generation of my family working in this industry. These are the issues I grew up around, and they’re a big part of why we’re building Hike Medical. Making the care that keeps people moving easier to access takes more than better technology. It takes understanding where patients get stuck, working closely with providers, and bringing those realities to the people making decisions about American healthcare. I was proud to bring that perspective to Washington DC and represent a field that has shaped so much of my life. Great seeing many friends at the event!

Navarra earned the honor for a form of advocacy that doesn't always get recognized: opening his pharmacy doors to curious reporters and showing them what compliant compounding looks like. Joe has given dozens of interviews and tours — including appearances on CNN and ABC News, with a segment alongside Dr. Sanjay Gupta — each one a chance to show the public what safe, professional compounding looks like. Presenting the award, Lucy Malmberg said showing people what good compounding looks like is one of the most effective forms of advocacy there is.

Every late-career Fortune 500 exec wants to ride off into retirement on the back of a lucrative PE exit. For 15 years, they've been hearing about the stupid money these PE guys are making and figure they deserve a bite at the apple too. So they puff their chest out and draw on that well-worn boardroom polish to convince the PE sponsors they'll run circles around the place. The Deal Team, starstruck by the logo on their resume, buys it. "𝘐'𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘴 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳." Brother, there is no "Comms Team." Forget hiring. You need to find a creative way to cut $2M in cost. "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘞𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘣𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳." My guy, PE-backed CEOs have been shown the door for less. Next quarter? You better have a plan in place by EOD. They'll call you Friday night to review it. I assess PE-backed leaders for a living. The ones who make this transition are the ones willing to literally roll up their sleeves and plunge the toilets. Don't let the smaller P&L fool you. Middle-market PE is not the little leagues. And if you can't adapt to more pressure and fewer resources, all you'll get is a severance check as a consolation prize.
