Catherine Cody shared thisHappy National Intern Day! (A day late.) Interning at Manhattan Theatre Club remains one of the most formative professional and personal experiences of my life. When I graduated with a theatre degree, I knew I wanted to act and write. What I didn't know was how I was going to make a living. I applied for every theatre internship I could find across the country. I was accepted at a few places, but Manhattan Theatre Club stood out because they believed interns deserved to be paid. In 2003, in the arts, that was rare. That $400 a week changed everything. The Paul A. Kaplan Theatre Management Program wasn't about making coffee. We worked alongside full-time staff and attended weekly seminars with department heads. I learned about fundraising during the campaign to restore the Biltmore Theatre. I sat in on casting sessions. I attended city finance meetings at the Mayor's Office. I met playwrights, actors, producers, donors, and civic leaders. Even as an intern, I was treated as part of the team. I became a full-time assistant and eventually a development associate. But the greatest gift wasn't the experience or even the career that followed. It was the community I found at MTC. Looking back at these photos, I can't believe how lucky I was that an internship brought so many incredible friends into my life. We spent our twenties growing up together in New York. We've celebrated weddings and babies, survived layoffs and heartbreaks, and built careers in theatre, television, media, communications, and beyond. We may not talk as often as we did when we were 25 and running around the city, but the friends I made because of MTC will always be some of the people I hold deepest in my heart. Thank you to Manhattan Theatre Club for believing in young artists and dreamers and giving so many of us a place to begin. Forever proud to have been an intern at 43rd and 9th.

Catherine Cody shared thisI took yesterday off to see The Odyssey in IMAX. (I could talk about it for days, but that's a different post.) Austin has only one IMAX theater, at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. During the pre-film program, I was delighted to see storyteller J.B. Sauceda pop up on the giant screen. I love the way J.B. writes, but I had no idea he was also a pilot who captured gorgeous images of the Texas border from the air. I'll link to the making of Texas From Above in the comments. As I've been reflecting on The Odyssey today and how filming in extraordinary places made the performances and visuals even more powerful, I also keep thinking about J.B.'s shots of Texas. Obviously, these are wildly different projects operating on completely different scales. But they're both rooted in real places. Not green screens. Actual landscapes where filmmakers have to work with the light, the weather, the terrain, and everything else the natural world throws at them. The best place-based storytelling requires showing up in person. That takes time, effort, and money. It asks storytellers to meet a place on its own terms instead of recreating it somewhere else. That's something no technology can replace, and it’s the kind of storytelling I hope we never stop investing in.

Catherine Cody shared thisThe WILDSAM National Forests & Grasslands Field Guide is now available in bookstores nationwide! To celebrate the book launch in Boulder last month, I had the chance to interview Wildsam's incomparable book editor, Samantha Alviani, whose editorial leadership and vision shaped the book from the very beginning. It was a delight to talk with Sam about place-based storytelling, why print media matters more than ever, and how she approached telling the stories of 193 million acres in a single volume. From Tennessee fireflies and Vermont catamounts to California redwoods and Arizona saguaros, this guide brings the National Forest System lands to life in the way only Wildsam can. So many people made this project possible. Thank you to everyone at Wildsam - past and present - who poured into it, especially Samantha, Zach Dundas, Erin Maguire, Jacqueline Knox, Tom Rendell and Philip Jankoski. At the National Forest Foundation, thank you to Sean Etsitty and Anna Wemple for trusting Wildsam with your stories, to our incredible marketing team for thoughtfully promoting the guide, and to Kelly Chmielewski for greenlighting the vision. And most especially, to Katherine Wolf, my partner through every step of the project- we turned creative chaos into a joyful collaboration! At NFF, we talk about creating generational impact through healthy forests. I love thinking about this guide as part of that work. In an increasingly digital world, it’s so meaningful to know these pages will be on bookshelves for decades to come. I hope generations of readers will open it up, discover stories about our public lands, and set out to create adventures of their own.

Catherine Cody shared thisHappy World PR Day! A few reasons I love working in PR: • I like to talk. (Obviously.) And I really like to write. • Promoting what I love is my love language. • Stories are how humans make sense of the world. • Finding clarity in complexity. • It's a priviledge to support journalists. Even on the days they ask tough questions, I'm grateful they're free to ask them. PR is a lot less glamorous than most people think, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Catherine Cody shared this📣 EXCITING DAY! We're thrilled to officially welcome Campstories as the National Forest Foundation's new PR agency! Campbell Levy, Courtney Housam, and the entire team have already blown us away with their passion, enthusiasm, and deep understanding of both storytelling and the outdoor world. From our very first conversations, it was clear they truly love forests, adventure, and the people who care for these incredible places. I can't wait to see what we create together to elevate the stories of our National Forests and Grasslands, the experts and communities behind this work, and the impact these public lands have on all of us. Here's to an exciting partnership! 🌲Catherine Cody shared thisWe are thrilled to announce Campstories has been named PR agency for the National Forest Foundation (NFF). The NFF creates measurable positive impact in caring for 193 million acres across 154 National Forests and 20 Grasslands across the United States. Each year, the NFF treats thousands of acres of forest to be more resilient to wildfires; restores watersheds and wildlife habitation projects, plants trees, and enhances the infrastructure that welcomes 170 million people annually who visit National Forests. As life-long stewards, and direct participants across the National Forests and Grasslands, this is a dream partnership for Campstories — allowing us to tell powerful stories about leadership and specialists who have dedicated their lives to sustaining clean water, strengthening local economies, and ensuring public lands are open for everyone to enjoy.

Catherine Cody shared thisEven after leaving the National Forest Foundation, Liam Sullivan is still helping shine a light on our National Forests. Seeing the Pisgah National Forest featured in Travel + Leisure feels like a fitting send-off. Thoughtful, steady, and incredibly sharp, Liam has a way of bringing clarity to complicated situations and keeping people focused on what matters most. He has also been a passionate advocate for the Pisgah and western North Carolina, especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene and the recovery efforts that followed. Wishing you all the best at Trout Unlimited, Liam. They're lucky to have you. And thanks to Abby Price for the thoughtful spotlight on Pisgah in Travel + Leisure Co.! Story link in comments.

Catherine Cody liked thisCatherine Cody liked thisI have spoken publicly to a variety of audiences for close to two decades. But it wasn’t until a particular moment in 2022 that I became a speaker. I’m thinking about this because I’m working on my next keynote and feeling very much the beginner. Rooting back to what I consider my speaker origin story helps: It was March 2022, during 1% for the Planet’s Global Summit conference in Los Angeles — one of the first in-person gatherings many of the 300+ audience members had attended in two years. We kicked off the event with an evening gathering, and my job was to provide the opening remarks. I had drafted these remarks in the weeks leading up to the event, my team had weighed in, and generally, we had done all of the right preparation. But in that run-up, I was still thinking of myself as a CEO who spoke purely out of necessity — a way to relay information to our community. But when I stood in the wings on that evening in 2022, looking out at the community that had traveled to be there even amidst the continuing uncertainty of the lingering pandemic, I realized that what was needed was not a polished set of remarks. It’s not an overstatement to say that I felt called in that moment to create a deeply human space in which people could feel welcome, feel present, and feel part of something that mattered. I felt called to be a speaker. So I folded up and tucked away my notes, took some deep breaths, and built a short outline in my head to guide what I would say and how I would show up. Then I went out and became a speaker. (And yes, I took my shoes off, because what better way to be fully present?)

Catherine Cody reacted on thisCatherine Cody reacted on thisI’m just going to say the thing: I’m really disappointed in who LinkedIn is pushing in their video FYP. I don’t want to see Kendall Jenner. I don’t want to see motivational speakers paid for keynotes on their morning mantras. I don’t want to see influencers brought over from other platforms. You know who I want to see on LinkedIn? 1. PEOPLE I FOLLOW: Hey, guess what, I actually did the work to TELL YOU who I’d like to see here!! 2. EXPERTS in my field who’ve built here because they want to teach me something!! 3. NEW VOICES (to me) because they had something interesting to say and you’re giving them a chance—even if they don’t use three hashtags and sleep with their PJs inside out. Now listen, I’m no Nantucket store demeaning influencers (IYKYK); but here I want career-driven insights from thought leaders. I don’t want lifestyle. I don’t want skits. I don’t want movie clips. I don’t want trauma or rage hooks. I don’t want the same 5 creators I see elsewhere because I’m not leaving Instagram or TikTok and I don’t want LinkedIn to keep trying to best those platforms (because you won’t). I want you to be the best damn professional networking platform okay? So can you please remember who the F you are so we can start enjoying this platform again? Please and thank you.

Catherine Cody liked thisCatherine Cody liked thisThe Basecamp newsletter is 100% human. No AI. It's hours of work every week from a team that really loves it: - I scour the internet for jobs I'd forward to my friends & add them to a slack channel - Chris Potter parses out all the details in a spreadsheet so everything is organized into the Basecamp system - Mary Andino ensures they are added to the right section, and creates our features - Ali Carr spends hours every Wednesday using her journalist background to ensure everything is curated gorgeously! - Nallely Bean shares our faves on social as a bonus! Could this be more efficient? Yes. But we're efficient in lots of other ways. We hope to keep this newsletter human. Here are a few of the jobs I really got excited to happen upon this week (and some that were submitted by brands!). Many are #entrylevel! I’m proud that #NatGeoExplorers helped shape two of the star projects: 🌊 “Ocean with David Attenborough” earned six nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Co-produced by National Geographic Pristine Seas and executive produced by Explorer Enric Sala, it’s a moving story of the beauty of our ocean, the critical importance of this ecosystem and the threats it faces today. 🐘 “Ghost Elephants,” directed, narrated and written by legendary filmmaker and Explorer Werner Herzog, was nominated for Outstanding Narration. The film follows Explorers Dr. Steve Boyes and Kerllen Costa as they work with master trackers from the region to search for mythic ghost elephants hidden in the Angolan highlands. Catherine Cody liked thisBest experience in Wilderness for me? Middle Fork Salmon trip a couple years ago. High water with some of my very best friends in the world.Catherine Cody liked thisWilderness experiences on public lands are some of the most remarkable in the country. From fly-fishing in the high alpine to big wall climbing in Yosemite, these experiences shape our appreciation for public lands, and the wide range of endeavors allowed in Wilderness. The Department of the Interior is asking the public to weigh in as it reviews its policies on how Wilderness is managed. A comment period is open until August 14. The agency hasn’t proposed any specific policy changes—yet. But the review comes at a time when the administration is rolling back other important public land protections, like the Roadless Rule. That's why it's important they hear from the people who value wilderness experiences. If you’ve ever backpacked, hiked, paddled, or backcountry skied in a Wilderness area, decision makers need to hear from you. The biggest shift I'm watching heading into 2026 is the continued rise of independent journalism and what it means for the industry. Legacy media outlets are consolidating, newsrooms are shrinking and at the same time, independent journalists and platforms like Substack are gaining real influence. The people shaping conversations aren't always sitting in traditional newsrooms anymore. They're building their own audiences, and those audiences are often more engaged and more targeted than what we used to see from broad-based coverage. For organizations in D.C., this changes everything. You can't rely on the old playbook of pitching a handful of major outlets and calling it a day. You need to be more strategic, more intentional and more focused on reaching the voices that actually move your audience. 2026 is going to require communicators to be more adaptable, more strategic and more willing to meet the media where it actually is, not where it used to be. #BigIdeas2026 #PublicAffairs #MediaStrategy

From Classroom to CEO: What It Really Takes to Build a PR Firm Last week, Liselle and I had the privilege of speaking with Mary Ann Pearson, APR's communications students at California Baptist University about one of our favorite topics: what it really takes to start, sustain, and scale your own PR firm. Here are a few lessons we shared: 1️⃣ Find your niche and know your “why.” Specialization provides clarity, credibility, and lasting impact. 2️⃣ Master the business basics. It’s not glamorous, but knowing entity types, profit vs. expenses, and legal structures gives you freedom. 3️⃣ Balance creativity + profitability. Set fair rates, track non-billable hours, and build systems that let your passion pay the bills. 4️⃣ Culture > headcount. Success and growth are more than just adding people to your team. You'll want to create meaningful relationships with those who share your vision. 5️⃣ Brand your agency intentionally. Your own agency’s branding deserves the same care you offer clients. 6️⃣ Define your success. National growth? Boutique impact? Flexibility? Align your goals with your values. These lessons came from our blog post “From Classroom to CEO: Lessons in Building Your Own PR Firm.” Start small. Be consistent. Dream big.
