The Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) has announced $1.2M in funding for five food-tech startups through its Foodtech Next Program — including $250K for Calgary-based Knead Tech. Knead, led by cofounder & CEO Lourdes Juan, will pilot its Matching Modules platform to streamline food rescue logistics and connect surplus food with those who need it most. “This project is an important step toward reducing food waste and ensuring more food makes it to the people who need it most,” said Juan. In February, the Smart Prosperity Institute appeared before the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry as part of its study on the role of the agriculture and agri-food sector in Canada’s food security. Food security is not just about producing more. It’s about increasing the financial and productive resiliency of Canadian farms. It’s also about reducing the sector’s exposure to unnecessary long-term risks and costs. It’s about making production systems and agri-food value chains more reliable and efficient. And it’s about reducing waste and increasing predictability throughout the entire food system — "reclaiming our ability to feed Canada and the world for generations to come." These were among the insights shared by our Executive Director, Geoff McCarney, and Director of Nature Economies, Michael Twigg, who highlighted key takeaways from our work, showcasing how advancing sustainability and building resilience are key to ensuring food security in Canada. Increasing DNA testing capacity in Canada is a crucial step forward for the Canadian beef sector. We’re proud that our investment in the Breeding Acceleration Program at the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) is delivering results, including this great partnership between GIFS, the University of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Beef Improvement Network. We’ll continue to support solutions that enable producers to produce high quality food more efficiently, while strengthening the competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture and food industry.

GIFS was at the Canadian Western Agribition today to announce a new initiative supporting Canada’s beef sector. 🎉 A strategic partnership between GIFS and the Canadian Beef Improvement Network is bringing high-throughput genotyping capabilities to Canada. The initiative eliminates the need for Canadian beef producers to send samples abroad for testing.
