Rob Coppedge shared thisThanks to James Mawson for creating a place where CVC programs can learn from each other this way… it is really important for the health and success of the industry and the maturation of the CVC model. And, as part of this, I really appreciate Global Corporate Venturing for shining a spotlight on our story. This recognition comes at an important time for Echo Health Ventures - as we turn 10 this year and have been stepping back to recognize all of those who have been a part of our first decade and positioned us to deliver more Impact in the decade ahead. While I get my head shot blown up below, the real Titans are the BCBS plan leaders who have supported our model over the years (Mark Ganz, Brad Wilson, Patrick Conway, Tunde Sotunde, Gerald Petkau, Jared L Short, Vince Price, Mitch Perry, Curtis Barnett, JD Hickey, Cal Kellogg, John Giblin, David Criswell, Mike Rains, Samuel Y., Scott Winter, Sonny Goyal, Bryony Winn, Rahul Rajkumar, Cheryl Pegus, Laurent Rotival, Richard Popiel,, Donna Milavetz MD, Alicia Berkemeyer, Neda Long, Ed Weklar, Philip Sherrill, Amy Andrews, Lisa Murphy, Mark Jansen, Andrea Willis, MD, Chris Blanton, Lindsay Harris and many others)…. The Echo story is really the story of these plans (Cambia Health Solutions, Blue Cross NC, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield) and their leaders leveraging market driven innovation to support their strategies.Rob Coppedge shared thisEcho Health Ventures was born as a joint #venture between not-for-profit health #insurance plans Cambia Health Solutions and Blue Cross NC in 2016. Over its first five years it faced many of the classic drivers of #CVC failure: CEO transitions, Covid‑era shocks and shifting parent company #board priorities. Yet Echo not only survived; it extended its model into an alliance of four health plans and now claims that around 80% of the #startup companies it has invested in have a meaningful commercial engagement with at least one of its plan partners. According to Rob Coppedge, this was not a story of a clever #fund simply out‑investing the market. It was the result of deliberate organisational design choices: opting to be a bridge rather than an island, creating a professional #services arm that embeds #resources inside the plans, actively engaging plan executives and their #board members in Echo decision-making, and intentionally developing a strong culture that values humility and clearly positioning Echo as a tool in service to the health plans, not a strategy in and of itself. Here are six key learnings from the conversation. (Link in bio.) Rob Coppedge is part of the #GCVTitans cohort - a list that acknowledges those who have led the same #corporate venture programme for more than a decade. #corporateventure #portfolio #investment

Rob Coppedge shared thisI feel really lucky to be able to share this post - as Michael Hollis and I have been talking about finding a way to work together for years. I've been a fan of his work - what he does, but primarily *how* he does it - for almost 20 years. I am excited that we get to join him, Andy Fanning and the Optura.AI team in their mission to build something really valuable and meaningful amidst the noise. Echo Health Ventures has been tracking Optura since Mike and Andy were white boarding these ideas - and it's been wonderful to see the earliest green shoots from their work. But, as Mike keeps reminding us, there's much more to do here... and I am glad that we can play a part in supporting Optura as they build something special. Special kudos to my colleagues Kurt Sheline, Annie Weissbach and Suzanne K McLemore who led the charge from the Echo side; our syndicate partners (Salesforce Ventures, Susa Ventures, Matrix and HC9 Ventures) for the demonstrated commitment to partnership; and the AI leaders for across Echo's Alliance (Cambia Health Solutions, Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Cross NC, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee) for their guidance and feedback during diligence. Now, I just want one of Hollis' "ROAI" hats.... then I will know I've made it! If you don't know what ROAI is yet, Optura is making sure you will soon....Rob Coppedge shared thisHealthcare doesn't have an AI adoption problem. It has an AI results problem. Billions are being spent, mostly on blind pilots that never reach production. That's the gap we built Optura to close. Today, Optura is announcing a $17.5M Series A, led by Salesforce Ventures, with Echo Health Ventures joining Susa Ventures, Matrix, and HC9 Ventures. With this round, Optura has raised $25M+ since launch. All of it backing one belief: AI in healthcare should be measured, not assumed. Our ROAI™ platform helps healthcare plans and providers decide what AI to build, scale, and stop. Every initiative gets scored on enterprise value before a dollar is spent. Every live agent gets measured on what it actually returns. With $2B+ in AI work running on Optura, ROAI™ is becoming how healthcare leaders separate signal from noise. To the payers, providers, and partners turning AI from a line item into a results engine: thank you. The real work starts here. A big thank you to Heather Landi at Fierce Healthcare for the exclusive feature: https://lnkd.in/eu2s6Fa6 #ROAI #Optura #HealthcareAISalesforce Ventures, Echo Health Ventures back Optura's $17.5M series A to track AI performanceSalesforce Ventures, Echo Health Ventures back Optura's $17.5M series A to track AI performance

Rob Coppedge shared thisI had one of the most interesting, challenging and fun experiences in recent memory when I returned to my alma mater Georgetown University to contribute to the Business of Health program being built in the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business by Sandeep Dahiya. I taught an intensive week long class on multistakeholder problem solving with amazing guest panelists (a veritable who's who of the people I most respect in the business) and some very talented students. We tackled really thorny problems (high cost drugs, the challenges of value based payment, rural health care access and quality and social drivers of health) from many different perspectives - assessing why its been so hard for us to address these challenges sustainably without system-focus and multistakeholder models. A real crash course in the messy realities of our industry for the next generation of its executive and leaders. If you are looking for talented MBAs being trained at the intersection of all things policy and business and clinical and global... please spend some time getting to know Georgetown and the McDonough School in particular. Students like Madeline Auerbach, Matthew Caffet, Srimannarayana Potluri, Dalila Ferrante, Matt Fowler, Lucas Han, Diya Jacob, Brendan Keefe, Mara LeFevre, Taylor Medlock, Elizabeth Murotake-Fujikura, MHA, Nirali Patel, Ella Rutanen, Dylan Stephens, Rachel Thomas, Mike Yu, Eric Bautista, Jacqueline S., and Yumin Gao would be great additions to your teams.... Huge thanks to my colleague Nash Carey-Ewend who helped me pull this class off - and all our guests Julie Barnes, Kody Kinsley, Lewis Mattison, Reginald D. Williams II, Doba Parushev, Oleg Nodelman, Tom Rodgers, Paul Meyer, Dan Conrad, Brad Wolters, Caprice Knapp, PhD, Tim Petrikin, Marc Samuels, Tamara N. Thomas, and Mat Kendall (also to Mark Ganz who couldn't be with us, but contributed as the syllabus came together). And special thanks to Bill Kerr who just happened to be in town, showed up, added to the discussion and bought everyone drinks and snacks - so Dr. Kerr may have won the MVP award (from the MBAs at least). Again, thanks to everyone involved - and if you are interested in getting involved in a differentiated health care business program that is using Georgetown's unique and natural advantages to develop health care MBAs for the future of the industry.... reach out to Sandeep, Dan Mendelson, me or others who are engaged with the Business of Health program. Really exciting stuff that I am proud to be part of.... Hoya Saxa!

Rob Coppedge shared thisThis a time of year that I really love - as we get to publish our Impact Report and talk about our progress on *both* sides of our dual mandate. Echo Health Ventures is not a traditional #VC firm - and that's by design. We set out ten years ago to actively pursue a dual mandate (financial and strategic returns) - and have been on a journey ever since to refine and enhance how we instrument, measure and drive accountability around these strategic returns. We've built a team to advance on this side of our mandate - and while we don't always get it right, that team is constantly learning and improving our investment, portfolio management and market development processes. We've been working with leaders from across the industry to develop standards (thanks Mark McClellan, Cheryl Pegus and Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy) and share best practices with our fellow travelers. But the Impact Report is a deliverable that holds up a mirror to the work our team, portfolio and Blue plan Parnters are doing - assesses what's working well and what's not - and establishes a framework so all our organizations can learn and improve. If you and your organization are on a similar journey, we would love to hear from you and share what we are each learning. If you've seen models in other indsutries or categories, we would love to hear about them. Making good on our dual mandate is why we have the privilege of doing this work... and this report reflects real advances in the past year driven by the leadership of Suzanne K McLemore, Troy Arnold, Annika Van Gilder and the rest of the team.Rob Coppedge shared thisAs Echo Health Ventures celebrates its first 10 years, we continue to be transparent about how we achieve our dual mandate of both measurable impact and financial returns. Read our 2025 Impact Report to learn how Echo, alongside our industry partners, drove sustainable impact in health care over the last year. https://lnkd.in/gwU6C8iy

Rob Coppedge shared thisI wish someone made an award that fully captured all the amazing things Troy Arnold does for Echo Health Ventures' portfolio companies, our health plan partners (Cambia Health Solutions, Blue Cross NC, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield), and the Echo team.... or that could at least thank him for how he leaves it on the field EVERY DAY in the work he does with all of us.... you will never meet a more humble human who has the talent and expertise to excuse him being a lot less humble... And I could go on.... But until that award is created, I am so happy that our friends at Global Corporate Venturing have recognized Troy as an Emerging Leader. He certainly is.... and a lot more.Rob Coppedge shared thisCongratulations to Troy Arnold, Partner at Echo Health Advisors, for his recognition as an Emerging Leader by Global Corporate Venturing!Global Corporate Venturing honors Echo’s Troy Arnold as an Emerging Leader - Echo Health VenturesGlobal Corporate Venturing honors Echo’s Troy Arnold as an Emerging Leader - Echo Health Ventures

Rob Coppedge shared thisI am so proud to have been a small part of the Cambia Health Foundation's Sojourns Scholars program - I was on the CHF Board when the program was launched and got to watch the early years of the program up close. Such an amazing group of clinical leaders all doing such difficult but essential work. If you want an example of how Cambia's Cause comes to life, uniquely, in the market - this is it. This is big and important stuff - and it takes vision and dedication... kudos Peggy Maguire Jared L Short Mark Ganz, all the Scholars, board members and CHF staff....Rob Coppedge shared thisWe've reached an exciting milestone! Today, we're honored to release the results of a comprehensive evaluation of our Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program—a 10-year, $25 million investment in developing the next generation of palliative care leaders. The findings demonstrate what's possible when purposefully investing in emerging leaders and collaborative innovation. "My hope is that the insights provided in this evaluation will inspire a continued commitment to supporting the next generation who will carry this work forward," said Peggy Maguire, president of Cambia Health Foundation. "The dedication shown by the original 108 Sojourns Scholars strengthens my belief in the power of collaborative leadership to create a more person-focused health care system." Rob Coppedge shared thisI am a strong believer that if done well, private investment in health care can improve care and reduce costs. Echo Health Ventures is deeply involved with the Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy Capital Impact Council to measure the health value that results from private capital investment - so we can know if we are on track, drive improvement and hold ourselves accountable. As an industry, we make real advances on this front with the CIC's new quality framework, building on the initial work we shared last year. The Health Value Evidence Quality (EQ-HV) Framework aims to make high-quality ROI measurement a routine, practical element of health care investing. Learn about the four stages of evidence quality defined in the EQ-HV Framework, how the strategy can be incorporated at each stage of an investment’s life cycle, and see 11 examples of how CIC members are applying it, including Echo and Strive Health: https://lnkd.in/dPwXmXDN - So many great colleagues are involved, but I want to call out the involvement of the other strategic and corporate investors who all dedicate resources to scaling health value in unique and powerful ways that extend well beyond the capital they invest: Craig Cimini, Amy Belt Raimundo, Lisa Suennen, and Dan Mendelson. And a huge thanks to Cheryl Pegus and Mark McClellan for leading the charge and to my colleagues Suzanne K McLemore, Troy Arnold and Annika Van Gilder for supporting the work.Rob Coppedge shared thisPrivate investment has the potential to improve health and health care but requires more compelling evidence of impact and return on investment. The Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy’s Capital Impact Council (CIC) has released a new framework that offers guidance on how to analyze evidence quality across the investment’s life cycle, highlighting real-world case studies from CIC members. CIC Co-Chairs Mark McClellan, Institute Director of Duke-Margolis, and Cheryl Pegus, Chair and CEO of Flyte Health, will discuss findings from the framework during a webinar on Friday, March 6, from 12:00 – 1:30 pm ET. Rob Coppedge reposted thisWe are proud to join the Series C for Codoxo, which is bringing innovation to health care payment integrity through the power of generative AI. Congratulations to Codoxo on its funding round!Rob Coppedge reposted thisThrilled to share a major milestone for Codoxo! We’ve closed an oversubscribed $35M Series C, led by CVS Health Ventures, bringing our total funding raised to over $75M. We’re excited to welcome Echo Health Ventures as a new investor, alongside the continued support of our longstanding investor partners. This investment accelerates our mission to redefine healthcare payment integrity with GenAI-powered Point Zero—preventing payment errors before they occur, reducing friction for providers, and helping payers act earlier and smarter than ever. With our rapid expansion into national health plans this year, the momentum reinforces what we’re hearing across the market: payment integrity must move further upstream to claim creation, be intelligent by design, and work for both payers and providers. Grateful to our customers, partners, and the Codoxo team for making this possible—and excited for what’s ahead as we scale the first end-to-end, intelligent payment integrity platform. Rob Coppedge shared thisIt was great to be part of this conversation about the work we are doing at Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy - Cheryl Pegus, Mark McClellan and the entire Capital Impact Council is pioneering the classification and measurement of the health value resulting from private capital investments - and that enables investors like Amy Belt Raimundo (Kaiser Permanente ), Ben Robbins (GV (Google Ventures) and Echo Health Ventures not just to assess the impact of our portfolio but to best position our firms and their resources to support and drive it…. Amidst all the distractions at #HLTH it was great to see a packed room and such great questions and follow up. This work matters and I am excited about the energy around it in venues like this…. Check out the CIC health value framework here: https://lnkd.in/gFuSb6Cg And learn how to get involved here: https://lnkd.in/gnxdMhjxRob Coppedge shared thisWe are still catching our breath from #HLTH2025 and all the new ideas and energy to make health care work better. Echo CEO Rob Coppedge joined a panel with Amy Belt Raimundo, Cheryl Pegus and Ben Robbins to discuss how to measure the impact of private capital investments in improving health care outcomes, access and affordability.

Rob Coppedge liked thisRob Coppedge liked thisI just hosted the Behavioral Health Tech VC & M&A panel, and got to quiz this allstar crew on everything from the Headspace acquisition pricing... >> JP Sloan was kind enough to speculate, and suggested it might be the double-edged sword of profitability: sometimes a great profit multiple looks like ...1x revenue. ...to whether VC really needs EVERY company to be an AI company >> Ezra Mehlman & Kelsey Maguire said yes...but in the same way that you couldn't have backed a company in 2000 that didn't integrate the internet into its strategy and operations. Which sounds obvious, but that means they ARE still sourcing investments beyond AI-for-fill-in-the-blank, which I was glad to hear. ...to how companies are supposed to build evidence to get VC, when they need VC to build the evidence >> Nans RIVAT acknowledged the challenge, named a few creative strategies for building that first proof, including seeking out paid pilots. >> Each person noted, in some way, that as the market moves from rewarding anything that expands access to really seeking to control behavioral health costs, proof that an offering has efficacy and ROI is everyone's focus rn. ...to how founders and CEOs should know if they're "ready" to consider an exit, given the uptick of consolidation this year >> Bill Watts gave a few good stats, followed by the wise answer of -- talk to an investment banker! JP Sloan concurred, and noted that bankers will sometimes build a relationship with a company over years before an exit, helping leaders to understand the state of the market and see when windows open. Look at me doing free marketing for bankers :) but I think that is the right answer for the moment we're in, and these two are worth a chat! Thanks everyone for a lively and fun chat -- we could've had a whole session on audience questions, the Behavioral Health Tech crowd is on point. Thanks Solome Tibebu and crew for having us!

Rob Coppedge liked thisRob Coppedge liked thisWe’re excited to announce Bobby Jindal has joined the Elara Caring Board of Directors. Bobby Jindal has a well-earned reputation in both America’s public sector and health care industry. During his two terms as Governor of Louisiana, Jindal led a top-to-bottom reformation and privatization of the state-run charity hospital and the state’s healthcare payer systems, revolutionizing the way patients receive care. Bobby also served as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Executive Director of the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, in addition to leading multiple health care organizations. Bobby added, “Health care is the great equalizer. Rich, poor, young or old, we all eventually need health care. That's why Elara Caring's mission matters so deeply, delivering a standard of home-based care that is unmatched. I'm honored to join the board of directors and help advance Elara’s critical work.” At Elara Caring, we believe the best place for care is where our patients live, serving over 60,000 people daily, across Skilled Home Health, Hospice, Behavioral Health and Personal Care Services. Drawing on his private and public sector experience with the health care industry, Bobby will bring invaluable insight to help Elara carry out our key mission: serving more patients where they feel most comfortable — home.

Rob Coppedge liked thisThank you, Eric. Twenty years of friendship, and this is the first time we recorded one of our conversations. One thing I'd add to Eric's summary. He asked me what I thought bold leadership looks like in health care right now. My answer is that the single greatest predictor of a successful transformation is the focus of the leader, and the discipline to keep the fundamentals in order underneath it. Safety, quality, and patient experience come first. Financial security comes second. Then you pick the two or three things that will meaningfully alter the trajectory of the organization, and AI should be one of them. If you layer AI on a poor operating model, you will get a very efficient poor system. The rest is how you show up. People are going to be scared, and they are right to be. Leaders who lead with humility, who admit they don't have all the answers, and who own their mistakes will be followed. Bravado won't get you there. I'd welcome your reactions.Rob Coppedge liked thisMy conversation with Marc Harrison, M.D. is live for the next episode of Incumbents and Insurgents. Marc is my friend and colleague, Chair of the TowerBrook Healthcare Institute, and someone I've known for twenty years. So this time we simply recorded one of the conversations we already have almost every day. Marc has seen healthcare from more angles than almost anyone alive. Pediatric intensivist at Cleveland Clinic. Founding CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. CEO of Intermountain. Founding CEO of HATCo with General Catalyst. He's looked at this industry with a loving but critical eye from nearly every point on the circumference. And he does it with great clarity on the question that animates him: what is the best use of the time any of us has? Marc and I diverge slightly on our perspective on the timing of diffusion. He believes clinical AI will diffuse more slowly than I do, but he also made the case for measured urgency. When people fear AI might harm a patient, he said, they forget that more than 200,000 Americans already die every year in our hospitals from medical error. The status quo isn’t necessarily the safest option, it's just the risk we've come to tolerate. What I can't stop thinking about is his definition of wisdom - the ability to hold joy and sorrow in your heart at the same time. That, he thinks, is what this moment asks of leaders. The technology is dualistic. Dynamite can build dams and level cities, and Alfred Nobel's name can still end up on the peace prize. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Listen below (link in comments).

Rob Coppedge liked thisI have known Robert Sepucha for almost five years. I could not think of a higher integrity CEO for Atlas Oncology--a company that believes that cancer care starts with the patient and their oncologist. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work together Bobby.Rob Coppedge liked thisI am very excited to join the amazing team at Atlas Oncology. Healthcare is hard. We spend so much time trying to navigate a broken system plagued by entrenched interests and perverse incentives that what should be our nation's singular goal -- helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives -- can get lost. Atlas' remarkable team is trying to rectify that by providing community oncologists with the resources to do more for their patients. Together, we can improve health outcomes for patients that need it most, all while reducing the total cost of care. Healthier patients and lower costs.
