The meat stick category has come a long way.
What used to feel like a gas station snack is now a legit high-protein option people keep in their gym bag, desk drawer, or car. I grabbed this Prime Rib beef stick from County Archer Provisions and it’s a good example of where the category is headed — 8g protein, zero sugar, grass-fed beef, and positioned more “premium snack” than impulse buy.
That shift matters.
Consumers are reading labels more closely. They want protein, fewer additives, better sourcing, and flavor that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. Meat sticks are starting to compete less with chips and more with protein bars and shakes.
From a retail standpoint, it’s interesting to watch:
• Premium price points holding
• Strong impulse placement near checkout
• Cross-merch opportunities in better-for-you sets
• More shelf space dedicated to protein snacks overall
Protein isn’t a trend — it’s a staple. And the brands that win in this category will be the ones that balance taste, sourcing, and brand positioning without overcomplicating it.
Curious what others are seeing in grocery or distribution — is premium protein continuing to gain share in your stores?
