Eddie Bauer files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Outdoor clothing retailer Eddie Bauer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, marking the third time the company has filed for bankruptcy in roughly twenty years. The brand, once known as a "pioneer" in outdoor clothing, plans to sell its approximately 180 stores. Eddie Bauer has been struggling with "declining sales, supply chain challenges and other issues" for years, says Marc Rosen, CEO of Catalyst Brands, which runs Eddie Bauer stores. Parent company Kontoor Brands announced it has initiated a competitive process to divest the Lee business. The Greensboro, N.C.-based company began the process in Q1 2026 and has reportedly attracted interest from multiple parties.

Saks Global just filed for bankruptcy. They owe up to $10 billion and still want to keep the lights on. Neiman Marcus was supposed to be the trophy. Turns out, it was the anchor. The group behind Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman, and Bergdorf Goodman is now running on emergency cash. Reuters lists LVMH, Chanel, and Kering as among the 10,000+ creditors. A who's who of luxury is now waiting on checks. The real collapse wasn’t foot traffic or fashion trends. It was vendor confidence. Inventory dried up because partners hesitated to ship. Consumers noticed. The spiral started. This isn’t just another department store drama. It's a system failure. 💥 Wholesale luxury used to be the safety net. Now, it's the warning signal. A few weeks ago, buyers were still placing orders for FW26. Now those orders might be frozen, renegotiated or redirected. Brands banking on Saks, Neiman or even indirect distribution through these channels are already rewriting plans. Quietly. Circana projected correctly that 2025 will become a more creative year for the total US toy industry and for the first time in a decade indie toy stores and the "big box" retailers are trending very similar. It has taken indies 5 years since the pandemic to normalize sales. As often happens the speed which indies react can cause huge spikes in sales upward but also lingering declines on the way down. This is now normalized but..... I do see new trends coming that just might lift us off once again, even in the face of some headwinds. The pandemic taught me how to better compete with online retailers and to use them as a benefit not a liability. CStore Decisions is recognizing Poppy Market in its 5 Under 70, that's five chains under 70 units to watch in the year ahead. Vintners Distributors Inc , the parent company of Loop Neighborhood Marketplace, announced the creation of its Poppy Market brand in early 2023, with the first location debuting in March 2023 near Arbuckle, Calif. Today, Poppy Market is entering a new phase of strategic growth following its recent acquisition of 11 stores from National Petroleum this spring, which brought the chain’s store count to 15 locations in California. One of the 11 acquired sites has already been converted to the Poppy Market banner, with two larger sites to follow shortly. The remaining locations will undergo renovations starting next quarter, pending permit approvals that will allow the chain to expand some of the smaller locations. With JCPenney reporting, we now have all of the department store numbers in for the second quarter. In terms of total sales change over the prior year, the scores on the doors are as follows: 🛍️ Dillard's: +1.5% 🛍️ Macy’s: -2.5% 🛍️ JCPenney: -3.4% 🛍️ Kohl’s: -5.0% 🛍️ Saks: -13.0% The decline in sales across most players is modestly interesting, although not unexpected, as some chains are still restructuring and closing stores. Of more significance is the difference between the groups. Both Macy’s and JCP, to their credit, are focused on reinventing their retail propositions. Both have invested in stores, products, and ranges, and both are being led by merchants who care about retail. The same has always been true of Dillard's. Kohl’s hasn’t abandoned retail, but it’s still getting its act together - and execution on the ground remains extremely patchy. And then there’s Saks. Of all the players, Saks is the one that most desperately needs top-line growth to support its huge debt levels and interest payments. Sadly, it is also the least well positioned to revitalize its retail business. The play seems to be more focused on financials than on customers (or on suppliers, most of whom remain frustrated) - and that does not bode well. Wholesalers in the gift and toy world. Get yourself set-up to manage the refund process. The Court of International Trade took a huge step in the right direction toward potential IEEPA tariff refunds. The court directed CBP to liquidate unliquidated entries without the IEEPA duties. This means some entries that are already paid will automatically receive refunds (when the government has the funds to pay them). Liquidity is still going to be a big stumbling block for the government (and no they cannot print more money to pay the bills). Important for today: 1. Get your ACE account set-up so you can understand what your working with and what might be owed. This is also what is needed if you are going to protest any entries (which might be required). 2. Ask your broker for an accounting of all IEEPA tariffs paid so you understand the total world of damages owed to you. Those are the two things you should be doing and then you should wait for more news. Nothing is final and nothing is clear (almost guaranteed that the administration will appeal the decision), except that things are going in the right direction. Money is flowing back into the hands of the people it was taken from illegally. For the many friends who have closed their companies due to the strain of tariffs. I did some research and ... 1. You most likely cannot sue the government for damages. Even though the tariffs were illegal and damaging. The government is protected by sovereign immunity. 2. You should still get your refunds. So be sure to talk with your brokers, make sure that your bank accounts are opened and connected, make sure your mail is forwarding. You are potentially owed a lot of money and should collect it.
