Judith W. reposted thisJudith W. reposted thisIn the bustling Colombian city of Medellín, urban planners tackled the intensifying heat island effect through an innovative Green Corridors initiative. Starting around 2016, the project transformed 18 roads and 12 former waterways into interconnected networks of lush vegetation spanning about 20 kilometers. Workers planted approximately 880,000 trees and 2.5 million smaller plants, including shrubs and ground cover carefully chosen for the tropical climate. These green arteries provide essential shade, block direct sunlight on pavement, and promote evapotranspiration, where plants release moisture that cools surrounding air. The result has been remarkable: average city temperatures dropped by around 2°C, with localized reductions reaching up to 5°C or more in shaded corridors. Surface temperatures in some areas fell dramatically, from over 40°C to around 30°C. Beyond cooling, the greenery improves air quality by filtering pollutants, supports biodiversity by attracting birds and insects, and creates more comfortable public spaces for walking and cycling. The initiative also delivered social benefits, training residents from disadvantaged neighborhoods as gardeners and generating thousands of jobs in maintenance and landscaping. At a cost of about $16.3 million initially—roughly $6.50 per resident—it proves nature-based solutions can be affordable and effective against climate challenges. As Medellín continues maintaining these corridors, the project serves as a global model for cities seeking resilient, equitable urban environments that harness the power of plants to combat rising temperatures. Judith W. shared thisI would love the see the City of Atlanta double down on supporting food producers not just retailers.Judith W. shared thisThe Mayor said it plain: some Atlanta neighborhoods go miles with no fresh food, and that was a choice. Family dollars and corner stores on every block, produce nowhere in sight. Then folks ask why diabetes and obesity run high in the same zip codes. Mayor Andre Dickens @andreforatlanta says the neighborhood reinvestment initiative concentrates money into food, childcare, healthcare and housing on the south and west sides, because scattered wins don't heal a whole community. Butternomics is the business of culture. #Butternomics #Atlanta #FoodDesert #FoodJustice #ATL

Judith W. reposted thisJudith W. reposted thisAt Georgia’s farmers markets, food is just the beginning. These markets are community gathering places that bring families, neighbors, farmers, and entrepreneurs together to share stories, ask questions, and build lasting relationships. Every visit is an opportunity to learn where your food comes from, meet the people who grow and make it, and support the local businesses that help Georgia communities thrive. Two new Georgia laws that change how growers and vendors operate (HB 117, SB 551, and HB 398) will make it easier for local producers to bring their products to market. House Bill 117 requires food service establishments to disclose when they are selling imported shrimp, Senate Bill 551 removes the state’s egg candling requirements for sellers who take eggs from backyard flocks, and House Bill 398 expands opportunities for cottage food operators by removing the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s licensing requirements and permitting more producers to sell through third-party retailers. Farmers markets remain trusted spaces for education and connection even as Georgia’s food laws change — vendors maintain their transparency and shoppers maintain their curiosity. Farmers markets are leading the way by fostering transparency, conversation, and community — and the people of Georgia can shop with confidence because they understand who and how their food is produced in the community. Meet us at the market. Bring a friend. 🌱 #MeetMeAtTheMarket #GeorgiaGrown #SageDCollective #BuyLocal #KnowYourFarmer

Judith W. reacted on thisJudith W. reacted on thisThe Berry Center will go forward with its annual ALL Festival, its version of a country fair—ice cream and a bake-off, reason enough to get on a plane to Louisville—where the choice of a book over 60 reading groups will focus on for the year is announced. Of course, this year the festival, scheduled for June 26th, will be largely devoted to loving remembrances of Wendell. I’ll be there in spirit, revisiting the fantastically impressive Berry Center, which Mary Berry toured me through over the summer. It’s a beautiful, active, instructive, moving place where Mary is carrying forward the ideas and practices that were the spine of Wendell’s 50 books. And the connections he also drew between respect for yourself, for your work, your community, the land you walk on, and the air you breathe. This year’s festival will be suffused with the life-giving, spiritually renewing, joyous voice of Wendell—a voice I was lucky enough to hear and record just six weeks before he died. Judith W. liked thisJudith W. liked thisAnd that’s a wrap on our 2026 Summer Internship season at Urban Growers Collective! Over 10 transformative weeks, this incredible cohort dove head and heart first into what it truly means to be an urban farmer in Chicago. Through heat, air quality emergencies, and even a couple of nearby tornadoes, they brought unmatched resilience, heart, and dedication to our fields. At its core, meaningful mentorship is a two-way street. Our team members serve not just as staff, but as teachers—stewards of land-based knowledge who generously pass down years of practical skill. Witnessing this intergenerational wisdom transfer has heartened us all. When seasoned leaders share their experience and emerging leaders receive it with deep respect and fresh energy, the entire organization grows stronger. Urban agriculture requires a unique balance: mastering raw, hands-on technical work while remaining deeply devoted to service. True community impact happens when dirtying your hands in the soil directly aligns with feeding and empowering local neighborhoods. Our interns embodied this balance through project-based learning that directly optimized our daily operations and widened our mission’s reach. What an awesome cap to the season to hear their final presentations spanning: 💚 Student Service Volunteer Programs; Wholesale projections & revenue modeling 🌾 Succession planting schedules 📋 GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training 🤝 Neighborhood community engagement 🎵 Even original music inspired by their time on the farms! To our 2026 intern cohort: thank you for your thoughtful contributions, your willingness to learn, and the joy you brought to our farms. You have left our operations sharper and our community richer. The future of sustainable agriculture is undeniably bright.
