Founded and built M.academy from scratch: the platform, the curriculum, and the AI tutor. My whole job is converting tangled architecture concepts into lessons that actually click for students.
15,000+ developers enrolled, 700+ video lessons, 500+ in University (the premium membership), and 90,000+ student conversations with the AI tutor. I'm building daily, shipping new lessons and platform updates every month. This is the core of what I do.
That same practice also goes to work for clients: I take on select AI solution architecture engagements through Devtomic, embedding AI directly into mid-market companies' workflows. Same craft, but solving one company's problem at a time.

Mark was in the very first Magento U week-long developer class taught by yours truly & Vinai Kopp (mostly by Vinai 😂) way back in 2011. In true "the student becomes the teacher" fashion, Mark built an even bigger education program for Magento and Adobe Commerce (M.academy). He's a gifted educator and entrepreneur, and one of the many people who have sustained & inspired me in my career. An absolute treat! (📸: Mark!)

Mark Shust posted thisA new version of my PHP framework, Marko 0.8.5 is now out. It's a small release, but the bug fix in it is a good one. If you had marko/media installed, `db:migrate` and `db:diff` would fail. The entity metadata parser choked on union-typed columns (`int|string`), and MediaAttachment declares one for its polymorphic foreign key. The migration commands parse metadata for every entity they discover, so it broke them whether or not you were using media. Thanks to Tu Van for the fix -- their first contribution to the project. Every PR now also has to pass tests, lint, and static analysis before it can merge (should have set that up a while ago, but they are in there now before 1.0). Marko is a modular PHP 8.5+ framework: it has Magento's extensibility, but with Laravel's DX, and errors that actually tell you what went wrong (and how to fix them). composer create-project marko/skeleton my-app Get the full docs at https://shu.st/AJEjqo

It's just a pile of 💩 I've spent the last year turning that pile into something with some definition -- a composable setup that you can point at any project and it works as you'd expect. This orchestration has a name: an AI harness. Peter Spicer 📎 agreed. And there’s nearly zero reason to review code that the AI wrote if you are using Kent Beck’s TDD methodology (and if you aren’t, you’re doing AI coding completely wrong).

I do it to stay in control, stay independent from big tech, and save time. It's literally faster to have my AI deploy a self-hosted template than to click around Vercel or AWS. Back then, there was no AI to write code, no GitHub Copilot, and far fewer ready-made solutions. We spent hours reading the codebase, debugging, helping each other on Stack Overflow, and learning something new every day. Magento 1 wasn’t perfect, but it taught many of us how eCommerce platforms really work. It played a huge role in shaping the careers of thousands of developers around the world—including mine. Why? 1/ The "fly on the wall" setup - feels like something you shouldn't quite be watching. You're in on the secret. 2/ It's feel good - an act of kindness. A sincerely smiling man, a sincerely smiling woman. What more could you want? 3/ Aeroplane coffee is grim. Everyone can relate to that. Pour over on a flight is a luxury. And unexpected. 4/ The demo is smuggled inside the moment - you learn the coffee's good via someone else enjoying it. Can almost smell it... (@pullandpourcoffee)
