That’s why I’m thrilled to interview social researcher Íde B. O'Carroll, PhD, to mark the launch of her new book, “Thirty Years of Change Through Women’s Eyes: Ireland, 1993–2023.” Ireland changed dramatically over those three decades. Some of the changes were legislative: divorce, marriage equality, reproductive rights. Many more were cultural and economic. Last Monday night, Women with Ambition held a fireside conversation with Ceann Comhairle (Speaker of the House) verona murphy at the residence of the Consulate General of Ireland, New York. As the first woman ever elected to serve as Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy TD, made history. In an intimate setting, we spoke about leadership, resilience, courage, and the determination it takes to keep moving forward when the path isn’t always straightforward. We explored the realities behind leadership, the difficult decisions, the setbacks, the responsibility, and the importance of staying true to your values. Recently I had the privilege of attending a Barretstown Foundation USA event at the Lotos Club, where Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton joined Hilary McGann of @newsbyhil for a fireside chat in support of an extraordinary mission. Founded in Ireland by Paul Newman, Barretstown provides life-changing camps and therapeutic programs for children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses, their work is rooted in something deeply powerful, giving children the chance to simply be children again. Thank you to Jane McCooey Women with Ambition for inviting me to join such a meaningful evening and to Dee Ahearn, Siobhán Lyons and Tony Dunne for a memorable event. In the lead-up to the Expo, the Women with Ambition team, their volunteers, and the Expo vendors worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life. That collective commitment exceeded every expectation. What could have been simply an event became something far greater: a space filled with generosity, encouragement, and genuine connection. This was felt in every conversation, every interaction, every introduction made between vendors and visitors. Born in Belfast, Marcus is an award-winning artist and filmmaker whose work explores architecture, urban transformation and the people behind it. His landmark film 'Rebuilding the World Trade Center' documented the rebuilding of the site through years of time-lapse filming, alongside drawings, paintings and photography created on site. The film went on to win a BAFTA Craft Award for Best Cinematography in a Documentary. Five Years Ago, People Laughed at Lab-Grown Diamonds. When I first started talking about lab-grown diamonds, many people in the jewelry industry said: “Customers will never accept them.” Fast forward to today… 💎 42% of all diamond jewelry sold now contains lab-grown diamonds. 💍 48% of engagement rings already use lab-grown diamonds. The shift is happening faster than most people realize. Now look at the economics: • Natural 1-carat diamond: around $4,200 • Lab-grown 1-carat diamond: around $1,000 or less That’s nearly 70–80% difference. So modern buyers are asking a very simple question: Why pay $4,000 for a 1-carat diamond… when you can buy a 2–3 carat diamond for the same budget? This is why engagement rings are changing first. Young couples today want: ✔ Bigger diamonds ✔ Ethical sourcing ✔ Smart spending ✔ Custom designs And lab-grown diamonds deliver exactly that. As a manufacturer, I see the shift every day. Retailers and designers are increasingly asking for: • Lab-grown diamond engagement rings • Custom fine jewelry • Flexible manufacturing without large MOQs The diamond industry is not disappearing. If Mahenge pink spinels are starting to reach more jewelers in the U.S., I think that’s a very interesting development to watch. Consumers have become much more open to colored gemstones in recent years. Many people are no longer looking only at diamonds, rubies, and sapphires. They’re also searching for stones with distinctive color, personality, and something that doesn’t already feel overexposed in the market. Mahenge pink spinel fits that space very well. The color can be striking, while still feeling fresh and a little unexpected. From an industry perspective, though, a gemstone doesn’t become mainstream simply because it’s rare or beautiful. Consistent supply, color quality, cutting, transparency of origin, and whether customers understand the value all matter. What I find especially interesting about spinel is that it still has a sense of discovery around it. As the market for traditional gemstones becomes more mature, I think more customers will be willing to pay for individuality and color rather than only for a familiar name. For the jewelry industry, the next opportunity may not simply be selling more expensive stones, but introducing customers to more gemstones that genuinely deserve to be discovered

In jewelry, growth is not always about selling more pieces. Sometimes it comes from becoming clearer about who the brand is for—and why the product deserves its price. I was interested in Signet Jewelers’ latest results, particularly the performance of Blue Nile. The brand reported 10% year-over-year sales growth, while Signet is placing greater emphasis on higher price points and natural diamonds. From an investment and brand strategy perspective, I think the more interesting story is positioning. Jewelry brands operate in a market where consumers have enormous choice. Materials can be compared. Prices can be searched instantly. Trends can be copied quickly. That makes a clear brand identity increasingly valuable. The strongest brands need more than attractive products. Product direction, pricing, storytelling, client experience, and distribution all need to reinforce the same position in the consumer’s mind. For me, this is also an important part of evaluating long-term value in jewelry. A good product can create a sale.
