Many clinicians don’t actively track which clients are approaching Medicare eligibility—and that’s understandable. But relying on assumptions can create risk for your practice. Clients become eligible for Medicare at age 65, but eligibility can also occur earlier due to disability. Without enrollment, clinicians may find themselves in a position where a long-term client’s insurance changes—and they are no longer able to bill for services. This isn’t just an administrative inconvenience. It can disrupt care, strain the therapeutic alliance, and create financial uncertainty for both client and clinician. Planning ahead is essential.
