Peter Horan shared thisHMTA has been an enthusiatic supporter of Prelude Early Learning since the earliest days. The ability of Emily Cadiz, M.S.Ed., M.A. Inclusive Music to raise grant money in this environment is powerful testimony to the importance of this work and the effectiveness of the approach. It's also an apt time to remember that Prelude was also a winner of Bend Venture Conference Funds. Happy to be partnering with Portland Seed Fund Angela Jackson Steve Eichenlaub Pam HoranPeter Horan shared thisAs we wrap up September Literacy Month, we are proud to annouce that Prelude Early Learning, formerly Finnegan the Dragon, Inc., has received an SBIR Phase II award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) part of The National Institutes of Health to advance our music-based approach to early literacy. This is a defining moment for us. What began with a belief that music could help young children build the language skills that come before reading has grown through years of research, development, and collaboration. Our Phase I classroom research showed promising gains in foundational pre-reading skills. Now, Phase II will support a larger clinical trial to study the effectiveness and usability of our approach in early childhood classrooms. We did not get here alone. I’m grateful for the ongoing support of Portland Seed Fund and its partners, Angela Jackson, Steve Eichenlaub, and Shashi Jain, Peter Horan and Pam Horan, Patrick Cadiz, JD Conley, and Devon Horace, MBA. Thank you for believing in this work and helping us keep moving forward. Our partnerships with Community Action of Washington County and Head Start, and the Marion & Polk Early Learning Hub, have helped bring this work into the communities it is meant to serve. To our team, the teachers and classrooms who have welcomed us, and everyone who has been rooting for us and supporting us behind the scenes over the past several years: thank you. You have helped shape this work at every step. Children build the foundations for reading long before kindergarten, through listening, speaking, singing, and playing with others. We’re excited to continue studying how those experiences can help more children enter school ready to learn to read. Reading starts with singing. Music is the medicine. https://lnkd.in/gWS43rmH

Peter Horan reposted thisPeter Horan reposted thisWhat a uniquely Portland evening. I was honored to have dinner at the beautiful Lan Su Chinese Garden alongside Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read and a small group of incredible Portland leaders and changemakers. The timing made the evening particularly memorable. News had just broken that The Supreme Court of the United States rejected the administration’s effort to put new restrictions on mail-in voting into effect ahead of the midterm elections. Sitting with Secretary Read in that moment, the pride he felt in Oregon’s long history of vote-by-mail and in the people who work to protect and administer our elections was palpable. It was one of those rare moments when you realize you are sitting together as history is unfolding. I felt incredibly fortunate to be part of such a small group sharing the evening. A huge thank you to Ashley Fenker, Joe & Heather Beusse Eberhardt, Oregon Zoo Director Heidi Rahn, Eric Hesse, and so many others for the wonderful conversation and community. And a special thank you to Elizabeth McCabe Nye, Executive Director of Lan Su, for her stewardship of such an extraordinary space in the heart of Old Town Portland. At the International School of Portland, we believe deeply that our school has a role to play in downtown Portland’s renaissance, and places like Lan Su remind us how much beauty, culture, learning, and possibility already exist right here in the heart of our city. A pretty special night in the City of Portland. And thanks, Nick Kristof for the amazing wine! #WeBelieveInPortland

Peter Horan shared thisArtificial intelligence hasn't destroyed writing--but it has weaponized mediocrity. Competent content is free, ubiquitous and utterly unremarkable. Everything that was known as of yesterday is baked into a common answer to a common question. This puts the premium on originality, timeliness and personality. Be first, be fresh, and maybe be funny. I wrote a post about "The Originality Imperative". Going forward we will worry less about whether AI contributed to an article or a post and more about how much value the author added ABOVE what AI contributed. Jonathan Aberman and his team at Hupside have created a tool that measures originality in content. Peter Horan reacted on thisPeter Horan reacted on thisToday would have been Om Malik's 60th birthday. I’ve been thinking about what made him so special, and part of it was that he had almost no patience for the superficial. Or the mediocre. Or, frankly, anything that had once been excellent and had decided to coast. That applied to ideas, cameras, design, writing, people, and especially coffee. Over the years, Om and I made the rounds of many of San Francisco’s best coffee shops. The moment the quality slipped, he was done. No nostalgia. No second chances. By the end, I think Linea, Coffee Movement and Golden Goat were about the only places still in the rotation. He could be wonderfully curmudgeonly, but it came from caring deeply about things. He noticed quality. He noticed effort. He noticed when someone had taken the time to do something properly. And he noticed people. Om was curious, sharp, funny, generous, sentimental, demanding, and deeply loyal. He made people feel seen. He connected people. He encouraged them. He showed up. I miss his texts, his advice, his very specific opinions, and the sense that somewhere in San Francisco he was probably drinking an excellent coffee and quietly judging everything around him. Remembering Om today, and every day.

Peter Horan liked thisPeter Horan liked thisThe Oregon Bioscience Incubator and OTRADI (OBI) Startup Spotlight Expo on September 17 sold out, demonstrating the region’s strong interest in biotech and life sciences innovation. Moderator Cara Turano (Oregon Entrepreneurs Network) led a conversation with biotech investors and industry leaders Shula Jaron (ONAMI), Shashi Jain (Portland Seed Fund), and Benjamin N. Nahir (Elevate Capital). The panel explored emerging funding trends, the evolving challenges founders face and the promising opportunities ahead in biotech and life sciences. So, how can startups set themselves apart for investors? Ben offers this advice: ➥ Build an exceptional team that combines scientific rigor with strong business acumen. Success is more than technical expertise; you need to assemble a complementary, well-rounded group. ➥ Clearly identify your buyer, how they'll pay for your product and why they’ll make that purchase. ➥ Thoughtfully consider long-term financial projections, even those far in the future. This demonstrates a level of business maturity that many healthtech founders overlook. #Biotech #LifeSciences

Peter Horan liked thisPeter Horan liked thisThe conversation around the Cornell 7 is highlighting the need for more conversations around consent and boundaries, starting in early childhood. And importantly, this cannot just be about teaching girls how to protect themselves. We have to teach all children what it means to respect another person’s body, voice and boundaries. That “no” means no. That silence is not consent. That someone who is unable to give consent has not given consent. That another person’s comfort, safety and autonomy matter. And that respecting someone’s boundary is a basic part of caring for another human being. This is exactly why we created Lynx Sets Boundaries at Slumberkins. The story helps children learn how to recognize and communicate their own boundaries, while also teaching them to listen to and respect the boundaries of others. Because consent education is not just about teaching kids to speak up. It is also about teaching kids to listen. These lessons may feel simple when children are young, but they become the foundation for how they understand consent, safety, relationships and respect as they grow. We need more of these conversations, earlier.

Orange Health Labs has always been committed to six-hour reporting. Not "as fast as possible" but specifically six hours, no exceptions. This one constraint made them build everything differently. They couldn't use standard labs designed for average daily volume - they had to build for peak hourly capacity. They couldn't have doctors at each location, so they built remote pathology, where one doctor reviews slides from multiple cities. They couldn't rely on traditional logistics - so they created dedicated networks covering four times the area of competitors. Now incumbents can't copy it without scrapping their existing infrastructure. They have hundreds of labs built the old way, doctors hired locally, and established logistics. Retrofitting would cost more than starting from scratch, and starting from scratch means abandoning their existing business. I like how Orange Health's edge is that matching their model means incumbents must treat their current infrastructure as sunk cost. This is the kind of advantage that compounds.

OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT Health, which allows consumers to connect medical records (via b.well Connected Health), has sparked intense discussion about consumer privacy protections outside of HIPAA. This discussion is important to have because it helps more people understand how the privacy foundation outside of HIPAA already exceeds HIPAA’s privacy protections. Some quick and candid / not just bullish observations on AI in digital health, especially given the enormous level of noise at #JPM2026. Last (5th) post in the 5-on-5 series, opening 2026 with 5 different pieces with 5 observations each on the market for digital health founders. We are passed the hype phase. I actually think 2026 will be the year when saying 'AI' or 'Agentic' will raise more questions than applause. Too many pilots are not scaling, too many promises are yet to be fulfilled. When building a product takes less time, the path to commoditization also takes less time. Scribes, chart summarizations, etc. which leads IMO to NRR being much more important than ARR (show you are resilient to price pressure and churn) Most real impact of AI is on the back end of new companies. This is massive and hence any budget that looks similar to 2023 / 2024 or even 2025 budgets should render a very serious question As a byproduct, and unlike 2021, increased head count becomes a negative signal if the company is indeed AI-centered (proxy to inefficiency) And another key difference from 2021: raising a lot of money (with a big valuation) while the public market is at best open for high 9-digit revenue, is really playing very aggressive poker. For additional color, see this interview with CTech by Calcalist (first comment)

At Bread and Butter Ventures, we're in our 7th year of investing in digital health. I've been hearing a lot of feedback lately from both funds and founders alike that VC funding for tech-enabled care delivery is fewer and far between these days. I'm super bullish on tech-enabled care as a component of a digital health portfolio because I believe that true, lasting innovation will be driven by bottoms-up early stage innovation responding to top-down industry pain points, and that to innovate we must have distribution through the incumbent plumbing of the healthcare system - and that includes care at the center. Yes, the margins are lower than pure software, but the distribution network of healthcare is very different than pure B2B. We're super interested right now in: ✅ Applications of AI to in infrastructure and operations of health care systems, provider networks, health plans to reduce manual work and enable everyone to operate at their best and highest use ✅ Applications of AI to clinical decision support and ultimately care delivery ✅ Solutions that address population health and help with access to care in both rural and urban settings (both from a care & cost perpspective), cardiometabolic health, women's health (still wildly uninvested opportunities to serve half the population), eldercare ✅ Insurtech, fintech and the payments layer of healthcare We would love to connect with more co-investors at all stages (pre-seed, seed, later stage) who are actively investing in digital health and specifically at tech-enabled care solutions to drive the next generation of healthcare innovation. Please DM us or tag a firm/investor here!

Institutions don’t fail all at once. They fail when design can’t keep up with change. In Davos this week, I’ll be joining the inaugural gathering of the Institutional Research Network, a new initiative convened by The Digital Economist. The focus is not another set of conversations but the patient work of connecting research, markets, and governance so ideas can take institutional form and hold under real-world pressure. Some initiatives are about visibility. This one is about durability. #Davos2026 #InstitutionalDesign #IRN #TheDigitalEconomist
