Rhy Waddington shared thisGreat article Michael Morris I’ve been fortunate enough to work and visit some of the world’s great private clubs. The sense of belonging is not only limited to the “member” creating a sense of place for the associates/ staff will inevitably lead to genuine hospitality and a exceptional member experience.Rhy Waddington shared thisI've spent my career building the opposite of an exclusive club — food halls, public markets, districts designed to let everyone in. So a story about five-figure dues and 10,000-person waitlists isn't usually my thing. But a CNN Business piece last week stopped me. Soho House: 212,000+ members, taken private in a $2.7B deal. Zero Bond: a 10,000-name waitlist, 200–300 admits a year. Operators fielding a dozen "how do I open one" inquiries a month. The headline reads like a luxury story. It's not. Capital has quietly decided that belonging is a balance-sheet asset — and that's a signal every restaurant, brewery, and food hall operator should sit with. Here's why I think the membership model is about to leak downmarket and reshape the mainstream 👇Private Clubs Just Became an Asset Class. The Product Was Never the Velvet Rope — It’s Belonging.Private Clubs Just Became an Asset Class. The Product Was Never the Velvet Rope — It’s Belonging.Michael Morris

Rhy Waddington shared thisWe are lucky to have Beth Cosgrove leading our culinary team! A driver of consistency, culture and accountability! All done with class and emotional intelligence.Rhy Waddington shared this“Our complexity of styles and cuisines requires standards and systems.” “What has been the backbone of success for me is being accountable. I like being held accountable and holding managers and line staff accountable. I don’t drive into work thinking I’m going to write anyone up, but I am not afraid to say what needs to be said.” “You can’t go around nagging about a dozen things every day. Pick the top two. Fix those things, then pick the next two another day.” “Not everyone reacts to the same dialogue.” “Documentation is related to having staff know what the standards are and what is expected while in our uniform.” “Sometimes they’re shy about admitting they don’t know how to do something, so we ask them to put notes in a hat on what they want to learn or what they need to do better. We train them all on these and continue to move the team forward.” “We need to look at the recipes and make them more literal. The system can fail you. Constantly reevaluate.” “I’m a believer in best onboarding practices. The first impression is so critical in setting par for our standards. It also shows we care.” “In our large, complex operation, quality can’t depend on memory alone. Nor can it rely on talent. It’s imperative we implement standards, accountability, and systems.” “We’re open with our communications because we have no other choice but to be. Standards are only a starting point. A system is how we ensure that happens every single time, no matter who is on the line every single time.” “Expectations are not implied. They are written.” “Standards explain not just what to do but why it matters.” “In a busy kitchen, information must flow quickly and cleanly. Communication is not emotional. It is operational.” “Accountability is the bridge between standards and results. Accountability is about clarity." “A good kitchen can produce a good plate on a good day. An excellent kitchen can produce good plates every day.” “Catch your team doing good things. Celebrate them.” Beth Cosgrove

Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked thisThis post has been a long time coming. The plaque has been sitting in the mail for a while, so it’s definitely overdue – but that doesn’t make the milestone any less meaningful. Today, I’m honored to share that I have officially earned my Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation. This milestone is the result of years of learning persistence, and the commitment to continuous growth. Earning the CCM isn’t simply about adding letters after my name – it’s about challenging myself to become a better leader, a better professional, and being prepared for whatever comes next. There were plenty of moments when balancing work, studying, and life felt demanding, but every challenge reinforced an important lesson: meaningful goals are rarely achieved under perfect circumstances. They are achieved through determination, discipline, and the decision to keep moving forward. Since becoming a new mom, I have been asked more than once, “Why would you take this on now? Don’t you already have enough on your plate?“ The answer is simple: I didn’t do it despite having a baby – I did it because of her. I want my daughter to grow up seeing that dreams don’t have an expiration date, and that life’s biggest milestones don’t have to be put on hold. I want her to know that determination, resilience and continuous growth our choices we make every day. Becoming a mother didn’t make me set my goals aside, it gave those goals an even greater purpose. This accomplishment is both a milestone and the beginning. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way and I’m excited for the opportunities, challenges, and growth that lie ahead. Here’s to continue to learn, to lead, and to never settling for where you are today 🍾🥂 #clubmanagement #leadership #hospitality #lovewhatyoudo #ccm #cmaa

Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked this🐕 I'm not a Runner. I went for a dog walk (and a cheeky 🍺 ). I ended up in a conversation about who actually captures the sale. A HOKA and Charlotte Running Company activation outside a brewery in NoDa, Charlotte got me thinking about the wholesale vs DTC debate, and why it is the wrong frame entirely. A $2.5 billion brand. A neighborhood run club. A local retailer helping build demand that may not convert through their own channel. That is not a problem. That is how the best partnerships actually work. Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked thisSome days are better than others! Having The Open Champion, Ryan Fox, host his homecoming press conference at his home club of Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club was a privilege. Very few Clubs have the honour of one of their members being a major champion and for it to be, in my opinion, the best major makes it even more special. Having the Claret Jug around the Club is very cool! And for anyone wondering, yes, Ryan really is as nice a guy as he comes across on TV.

Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked thisIn 2003, I rode a horse through Manhattan wearing 45 pounds of chain mail and carrying a sword. I promise there was a reason. WD-40 Company was turning 50. We wanted to celebrate every single person who'd built it over five decades, not just the product. We used to describe our brands as a "fortress." So I asked the team a simple question. Who protects a fortress? A knight does. So I ordered a full set of custom chain mail, rented a horse, and we flew to New York. We arrived at 4 a.m., and later that morning I rode to open the Nasdaq, with the original formula traveling beside me in a glass case. Cynics called it a publicity stunt. To me it was a love letter. Because I wasn't the star that day. I was just the bloke in a ridiculous costume, representing the whole tribe. The founders, the tribe members, the customers, everyone who'd tied their story to that little blue and yellow can. Here's the Learning Moment: The best celebrations aren't about the leader. They're about making your people feel seen for what they built together. Go on. Make a spectacle of the right thing.

Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked thisBrought my wife to the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago this week, wanted her to see where a lot of this journey started, and showed her around the property a bit. Completely by chance, ran into part of the banquet team I worked alongside back in 2009. It's a strange, wonderful feeling. Standing in the same building 15+ years later, this time as a GM opening a hotel of my own, looking at the same faces that helped shape how I show up to this work every day. Hospitality has a way of doing that. You move cities, change properties, take on bigger roles, but the people who trained you, pushed you, and had your back early on stay with you. Some of the best lessons I ever got weren't in a training manual, they were on a banquet floor at 11pm with this crew. Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked thisPeople have felt like I reinvented myself. I never reinvented myself. I just tapped into who I am. I had to learn how to get to that point. I thought people would look at me differently if I tried things that weren't the norm. Then I realized I was never normal. So it never bothered me when people looked at me differently. I never felt like I could only do one thing. I don't have no limits. No barriers. No restraints. I'm gonna do everything I want to do in life because that's what life is. I'm finally having fun. That's all we're doing. Having fun, doing what we do, getting these opportunities, and making the most of them.

Rhy Waddington liked thisRhy Waddington liked this🚀 The job of a leader is not to be the smartest person in the room. It is to build a room full of smart people who trust each other enough to do extraordinary things together. 👀 When people feel seen, valued, and trusted, they show up differently. They think differently. They contribute differently. Discretionary effort - the kind that cannot be mandated or measured on a performance review - flows naturally from people who genuinely care about the outcome. Garry Ridge built that culture at #WD-40 Company for nearly three decades. His book, Any Dumb-Ass Can Do It, is an honest and practical leadership book that I really enjoyed, three times (so far). ⬇️ Full review on the blog. Link in comments. ⬇️
