Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisDandy will be the largest dental company in the world. VCs and Founders talk a lot about the impact robotics and AI will have on high mix, low volume manufacturing industries. Nothing gets more high mix and low volume than dental prosthetics. The team at Dandy has obsessed over two customers: the dentist and the patient. Dentists need restorations that fit, a lab they can rely on, and fewer appointments spent fixing problems. Patients want to eat, speak, and smile without their dentures becoming the center of their lives. That focus led Dandy to rebuild the process from scan to finished product. Today, they’re introducing dentures designed to take two appointments instead of the traditional five or six. We all know that better, faster, cheaper is the strongest value proposition a company can have. In high mix, low volume environments that is extremely challenging. Over the last 18 months though, Dandy has had dozens of breakthroughs in material science, robotics and AI to bring this vision to life in a precision manufacturing market that nearly no one knows about, but almost everyone experiences in their daily lives. The hard work and determination that this team has had to bring these products to market will not only have an impact on peoples smiles globally, but much more is to come.

Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisToday we're introducing Dandy Fusion™ Dentures: the first denture to fuse hand-poured acrylic with digital precision. For over a decade, delivering a full denture meant navigating trade-offs in appearance, fit, and turnaround time. That choice ends today. Fusion brings hand-finished acrylic and digital precision into one workflow, so your practice can deliver: → Full dentures in as little as 5 days, with only 2 appointments. → Hand-poured acrylic for lifelike gingiva with subtle, natural variation. → A digitally designed fit for fewer chairside adjustments. → Dentures that support relines and repairs for long-term care. Every Fusion denture is made in our U.S. labs, so your patients keep their current dentures right up until the new ones are ready. When the fit is right and the finish looks natural, your patient leaves with more than a new denture. They leave with the confidence to smile without a second thought. Discover Dandy Fusion™ Dentures today. Link in comments.

Toni Oloko shared thisOne step closer to improving 🦷Toni Oloko shared thisToday is an exciting day at Dandy. We're introducing our first patented product. It's one-of-a-kind, and you'll only find it here. It's called Polychromatic Shade™, and it delivers what the industry spent decades calling impossible: porcelain-level beauty on a zirconia crown, for the price of a standard one. Every lab in the industry treated that trade-off as permanent. We treated it as a problem to solve. We pulled industry-leading experts from seven countries spanning three continents. Semiconductor engineers and machine learning researchers, all in the same room. What came out was our patented robotics process paired with AI-powered automation that gives every practice access to master ceramist quality for every crown. For Dandy, this is a product that will help us define the next decade of dentistry. Polychromatic Shade™ is the clearest expression of what we're actually building: a world where dentists never have to compromise on patient care. Dentists, want to see it for yourself? We'll send a free sample crown to your practice.

Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisMy CFO caught a $100K mistake in our 2026 budget this morning. His next question exposed a mistake I'd been making across my entire org. I had an extra headcount in the plan for a new lab we're opening. Our CFO asked: "Why do you need the second one?" My answer: "Downside protection. We're setting up automated equipment. Downtime is expensive." His response: "Okay, but why do you NEED a second one?" I didn't have a good answer. Because when you actually build from first principles, your risk should already be low. We have a manager on-site who can do IC work. If the network goes down, one of the two people will be there. I was padding the budget out of fear, not logic. In the Navy, we planned for every contingency because 99% wasn't good enough. In business, I'm learning that sometimes hedging against downside risk is just waste in disguise. That $100K could go toward training more practices. It could fund R&D that makes our product better. It could go back to customers through lower prices. The leadership principle that saved us: Push for specificity. When someone's being vague, assume they don't know what they're talking about. Keep asking "why" until you either confirm it or they get to the level of detail you need. Then tell them: "That's the level I expect you to start at next time." Andrew used it on me this morning. I use it in my org every week. It works at every level. Being specific isn't about perfectionism. It's about not wasting money that belongs to your customers.

Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisWe spent half our money on a broken dental scanner from eBay. The pedal was ripped off. That scanner kicked off a business that now employs 2,000 people across 5 continents. I still remember staring at our bank account with Toni Oloko in my Philadelphia apartment. $15,000 total. That was everything. Our business plan: Give dentists free scanners, they send us clear aligner patients, we make the aligners. Like Uber for teeth straightening. New dental scanners cost $40,000. We found one on eBay for $7,000. Thinking we struck gold, we bought it immediately, and a week later, it arrived in a box held together with duct tape. Inside was an iTero scanner from 2008. These old scanners had pedals like pianos - you'd press the pedal to capture the scan. Ours didn't have a pedal. It was ripped off. Metal shards where it should connect. At first, we were terrified. We bet everything on this company, and now we have a barely functioning piece of equipment that we can’t return. We hauled this disaster to a dental office in Philadelphia, set it up in their back room like we were professionals. The dentist looked at the missing pedal, looked at us, shook his head. Six months later, our clear aligner business was dying. Revenue would spike, then crash, then spike again. But something strange kept happening. Every dentist we talked to asked the same question: "Can I use this scanner for crowns too?" Turns out the broader dental lab market was $40B+, and zero tech companies were serving the dental lab market. Instead of sending patients to dentists for aligners, we became the digital lab that dentists had been begging for. Free scanners to replace putty impressions. 3-day turnaround instead of two weeks. Our first customer couldn't believe it. He called his lab of 20 years while we were still in his office: "Cancel all my cases. I'm switching everything." His lab: "What happened? What did we do wrong?" Him: "Nothing. These guys are from the future." Within six months, we went from 3 customers to 300. Word spread through dental forums like wildfire. "There's a company giving away free scanners and they're actually good." That broken $7,000 scanner is now in our office museum. Next to our first crown. Next to the rejection letters from VCs who said dental was "too small." The pedal never got fixed. And now we have a team of 2,000.

Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisI watched a patient sob in a dental chair when we seated her new dental crowns. But not for the reason you'd think. She'd had major dental trauma growing up, which made her terrified of dentists. Traditional dental impressions, that gooey mold material, made her gag. She couldn't tolerate it. So for years, she wore removable partial dentures. One of our dentist customers had just gotten a Dandy scanner from us. Picture a camera wand the size of an electric toothbrush. It hovers over your teeth, taking 1,875 images per second. The whole scan takes 60 seconds. You can pause anytime you need a break. No gooey trays. No gagging. No panic. We made her new permanent teeth at Dandy from that digital scan. During her seating appointment, she started sobbing as she looked in the dentist's hand mirror. "I wake up every morning, and the first thing I do is put in my fake teeth. It sits on my nightstand. No one has ever seen me without it," she said. Imagine that. Every single morning, before anyone could see the real her, she had to put in fake teeth. We didn't just give her teeth. We gave her the chance to wake up as herself. That's why over 100 dentists have told me we helped them fall back in love with dentistry. They're not just fixing teeth. They're fixing lives.

Toni Oloko reposted thisToni Oloko reposted thisWe 15x'd our revenue in <4 years. The most important thing we did differently to grow at hyper speed? We are insanely responsive. At everything. Our median customer support time is 17 seconds. And that speed makes all the difference. When I was defusing bombs in the Navy, our motto was "Initial Success or Total Failure." You mess up, people die. There's no "pretty good" when you're working with explosives. When I took over support at our dental tech company, we averaged more than 1 support ticket for every order. Imagine contacting Amazon support MORE than once for every single order. You'd never shop there again. I applied the bomb disposal mindset: What if every support interaction was mission-critical? Over 18 months: - Eliminated 80% of support tickets - Cut response time to 17 seconds (median) - Hired lab technicians who could speak clinically, not just customer service reps The business world kept telling me "not everything needs to be 100%." They're right. But figuring out WHICH things need to be 100% is where all the leverage is. For us, support is that leverage point. Dentists cycle between patients all day. 8 minutes on hold means they can't reach us. 17 seconds means we catch them between appointments. The #1 reason customers stay with us is our support. Some things really are life or death for your business. Treat them that way.

Toni Oloko reacted on thisIndustrial breakthroughs often come from moving the technology one step earlier in the process. Dandy came out of stealth today with Fusion, and one detail encapsulates their approach. Use 3D printing to make the mould, not the denture. Dentures didn't stop improving because nobody wanted a better one. They stopped because the way they were made could not support one. Nothing in manufacturing is higher mix or lower volume than dental prosthetics, where every single unit is bespoke. The process was the binding constraint on the product. Printing the denture would only have made a faster version of the old thing. Printing the mould keeps the materials dentists trust and puts the automation where the cost and variability live. I have spent time in their labs and with the team. This is not a software company that outsourced the hard part. Material science, scanning, AI, robotics and manufacturing are being designed as one system, in a category most people assumed had stopped innovating. And the output is remarkably ordinary. Fewer remakes and chair time back for the dentist. Two appointments instead of five for the patient. You keep your current dentures until the new ones are ready. Someone you know eats dinner tonight and does not think about their teeth. Congratulations Daniel Hanover, Toni Oloko and everyone at Dandy. Industrial engineering at scale is alive and well in America.Toni Oloko reacted on thisYesterday we took out a full-page ad in The New York Times for dentures. Not exactly the category you expect to see taking over a page in the Business section, but roughly 1 in 8 Americans rely on them and almost nobody talks about them outside dentistry. I’ve always thought that was odd. A denture is one of the most personal things a person wears. It affects how they eat, speak, smile, and whether they feel like themselves sitting across the table from their family. So why have dentures been made largely the same way for decades? We’ve spent a lot of time at Dandy changing that. That work became Dandy Fusion™ Dentures. It combines a digitally engineered base with hand-poured acrylic, so dentists don’t have to make the same trade-offs between precision, appearance, and repairability. It took years to get there. Figured it was worth putting the conversation in front of a few more people.

Building a startup in healthcare isn’t about free snacks and a cool logo. It’s about mission. In my latest episode of The Interventional Endoscopist, Virgo co-founder Matt Schwartz talks about what really keeps a startup team motivated when they could just go work at Google or Meta: "They’re not here because of the paycheck. They’re here because no one else was capturing this data… and because they see the potential to make a dent in healthcare for the better." At Virgo, that mission is creating an amazingly unique dataset of procedure video — and using it to improve care, efficiency, and ultimately enable better AI in endoscopy and beyond. In this clip, Matt breaks down: -How to attract people who are genuinely drawn to the mission -Why a clear “why” matters more than startup perks -How a small, focused team can push healthcare forward in a meaningful way 🎧 Watch the short clip below, and catch the full conversation here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gVP8WVt2 If you’re interested in AI, endoscopy, or building mission-driven teams in healthcare, this episode will resonate. #GI #Endoscopy #DigitalHealth #MedTech #Startups #Leadership #AIinHealthcare
