We are planning a two-day conference in pure mathematics at our university in India. This would be my first time as a organizer. The university, being relatively new, has already provided some financial support; however, this funding is not sufficient to cover all expenses. The programme is intended to be fully academic and scholarly, there will be no registration fee, and participants will be provided with local support (accommodation and meal). We therefore require a modest additional amount (approximately €500). While this may be a small sum internationally, it represents a significant amount in Indian currency.

Since this is a conference in pure mathematics, industrial sponsorship is unlikely. I would therefore like to know whether there are international mathematical organizations that offer financial support for such events. In particular, I have noticed that some mathematics conference posters acknowledge academic journals as sponsors. How does sponsorship by a journal typically work, and what is the appropriate way to approach a journal to request a small amount of financial support?

Thanks for suggestion

What about India government agency (national or state) support? Commented yesterday
  • @AlexanderWoo, less funding by govt unless reputed institute organizing it, but we will try here as well. Commented yesterday

Maybe don't completely give up on industry. For example, Microsoft Research has a branch in Bangalore that might be willing to contribute, even to pure math. Commented yesterday

A few suggestions, but they may not work out on short notice.

In the US, textbook publishers in the field often help fund conferences. They need space for displays and time to talk to participants. This works best for large conferences, of course.

Next, look at the announcements of similar conferences in India and elsewhere. They often publish a list of sponsors and you might consider contacting some of them. Those conference committees might be able to help.

Third, look to those companies that hire your graduates. They have an interest in your success and might be able to help.

Good luck.

The European Mathematical Society has some funding for conferences in the Global South.

From the website:

Funding for the organization of training events and conferences in the Global South. This grant can only be used to support participants from the Global South. Typical grants range from €1000 to €2000.
