Where do I access the "Number of users of a Node Tree"

Using Blender 3.6.9. I am a complete and utter noob. I need to use the answer to the question in How to make independently editable copies of the same node group?

But I can't find the "little number" referred to, nor does it appear in the side panel in node -> properties.

UPDATE

I couldn't get that to work at all, so I switched to the idea of saving the Node Tree as an asset and applying it to relevant items in a Collection in a new project. See discussion at Trying to save a Geometry Node tree as an asset that can be imported (multiple times) into a new blender file

  • $\begingroup$ @DanielMöller I just tried that. I switched to "Blender File" but it didn't seem to do anything. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 5 at 20:01

I think what might be happening is that you have the Edit > Preferences > Editing > Duplicate Data > Node Tree check box turned on. (It's default is "off".)

If this box is off (the default), then if you click on a node group:

then as soon as you hit ShiftD, the display of the node should IMMEDIATELY change to show the added user:

If the box is on (which I suspect is your setting), then when you hit ShiftD, the display of the node will not change, but the duplicate will have a different name. (Here, it is "NodeGroup.001" instead of the original name "NodeGroup".)

In this case, the node group is already an independently editable copy, so you shouldn't need to click on the number of users to make it separate. If you use Tab to edit it, you should be able to make changes in each copy without affecting the other.

  • $\begingroup$ I checked. Duplicate Data -> Node Tree was off (i.e. unchecked). So if I set it on, will I be able to modify the input of one group separately from the other? It doesn't seem so from what I tried just now. Or would that only apply to new copies I make from there on? $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 5 at 20:12
  • $\begingroup$ That checkbox will only apply to future copies, not ones you've already made. But since my diagnosis of your problem was wrong, I think there must be something else going on. You could try turning the checkbox on and making another duplicate, but I'd be a little surprised if that solved your problem. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 6 at 1:41
