Today I’ve got some chemistry-based budget friendly hacks for a spotless clean sink!

Remember those satisfying baseboard hacks we shared? Well, get ready for a new level of clean in an equally overlooked spot: your sink and sink rim! The tiny crevices, especially around the rim and seal, might be hiding more grime than you think, but don’t worry, I have some easy budget-friendly hacks to make it sparkle.

Budget Friendly Hacks For a Spotless Clean Sink

Why Do Sink Rims Get So Dirty?

The gunk around sink rims is usually a mix of soap scum (calcium and magnesium salts from hard water reacting with soap), biofilm (a community of bacteria and fungi, including mildew, thriving in damp environments), and general food/debris particles.

With the constant moisture, warmth, nutrient source in a sink, it can be one of the dirtiest places in your home.

Here are my top sink rim cleaning hacks (good for entire sink, but we are focusing on the rim):

Hack 1: The Baking Soda & Hydrogen Peroxide Power Paste (My Favorite)

This can work for the entire sink, but it is going to be the best tip for the rim and seal of your sink drain. This is good for mildew, odor, and general scrubbing.

Ingredients:

• • Baking soda (around 1-2 tbsp)
  • Hydrogen peroxide (enough to make the baking soda paste like so around 1-2 tsp)
  • Stiff sponge or scrub brush

Making the paste: First, add some baking soda into a bowl. Lightly drop or pour some peroxide onto the baking soda until a thick paste is formed. Almost like toothpaste.

Application:

1. Apply paste generously to the dirty rim/seal.
2. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
3. Scrub with an old toothbrush or stiff sponge.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. If you have a stainless steel sink, follow up with a polish or shiner to make it really sparkle.

Why does this work?

Baking soda (NaHCO3​) (sodium bicarbonate) acts as a mild abrasive to scrub away gunk and is also alkaline, helping to neutralize acidic grime. Hydrogen peroxide (H2​O2​) is an oxidizing agent that effectively breaks down and kills mildew/mold at a molecular level, bleaching away stains.

Hack 2: The Vinegar & Dish Soap Degreaser (for Greasy Buildup & Soap Scum)

White vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid that effectively dissolves hard water deposits and many mineral stains. Dish soap contains surfactants that break down and emulsify grease and oils, allowing them to be rinsed away.

Ingredients:

Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water, add a few drops of dish soap.

Application:

1. Spray liberally onto the rim/seal, and all over the sink.
2. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
3. Scrub with a brush or sponge.
4. Rinse well.

➡️ Caution: Avoid using vinegar on natural stone if your sink is marble or granite. This particular tip works great for stainless steel or ceramic. 

Hack 3: The Borax & Lemon (for Stubborn Stains & Brightening)

Borax (Na2​B4​O7​⋅10H2​O) (sodium tetraborate) is an alkaline mineral that boosts cleaning power, acts as a mild abrasive, and helps inhibit mold. Lemon juice (citric acid) provides a natural acidic boost for stains and a fresh scent.

Ingredients:

Mix a tablespoon of borax with enough lemon juice to form a paste.

Application:

1. Apply paste.
2. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
3. Scrub gently.
4. Rinse thoroughly.

These hacks are primarily for the rim and seal of the drain area, but remember your entire sink can be scrubbed with these tips or a simple vinegar cleaner works great too!

Maintenance is Key To Keeping Things Clean

Just like with our glass shower doors and toilets, keeping things clean and dry can be the best step to making sure things stay clean, but also make your cleaning go quicker by not letting things get as dirty in between deep cleans. 

Drying the area after each use prevents moisture accumulation, inhibiting mildew growth. Keep microfiber clothes on hand for  drying out the sink after you use it or rinse it. 

Also, a quick daily wipe with a multi-purpose spray can prevent build-up.

The Best Cleaner For Marble, Granite, Or Natural Stone Sinks

Additional Tips For Stainless Steel Sinks

All the tips in this post are great for the rims and seals in your stainless steel sink, but I have some extra tips for you to keep in mind.

First, make sure you “clean with the grain” of the stainless steel. It can be hard to achieve this because sinks get really dirty, so you always need a circular motion to properly clean. Just try to keep it with the grain of the sink to avoid scratches.

Stainless steel sinks get scratched no matter what you do because they are a space for utensils and dirty dishes, but you can continue to keep it clean and try to keep the scratches to a minimum by following these tips.

I bring this up because readers always mention this. My sink is older and was scratched when we moved in a few years ago, but I maintain its cleanliness and try to minimize additional scratches with these tips.
