This is such an easy DIY project that is great for kids! You can make this DIY fairy lantern from paint cans in no time at all!
It looks so pretty outside at night in the summer!

DIY Fairy Lantern From Paint Cans
If you know me, you know I LOVE spray paint. I love the science behind it (life of a chemist 😉 ), but I also love how incredibly easy it is to transform any ordinary piece of junk into something pretty. Soon, I will share with you all my favorite tips and information on spray paint, so be sure to follow for more fun, easy tricks anyone can use!
We built a fence in our backyard this winter and had so many leftover cans from staining it. I hate throwing things away so I decided to use the cans for projects. Last week, I decided to make a fairy lantern to hang up in the backyard along with my vintage lantern.
I love having sweet little lights in yard for those summer nights outside! Here is how I turned this ugly paint can into a DIY fairy lantern!
Supplies
- 1 old paint can
- 1 can spray paint (I love this textured spray or the metallic spray)
- 1 can glitter spray paint (Krylon Glitter Blast is the best one I’ve tried)
- Drill
- Battery operated lights (These Battery Fairy Lights are the best)
Directions:
- First, clean off your can. I used baking soda and vinegar to soak it in. After it is clean and dry, spray paint it with a few coats of any color you choose. I recommend using an anti-rust outdoor type, so it will be protected from weather.
- Next, use a marker to dot the areas you want to drill out. I went with small little dots to create a soft fairy light glow, but you can use any pattern you want!
- Secure the can to a piece of wood like above. My husband drilled on a two inch piece of wood to hang over the work bench, this way you have support to drill your holes. To drill the holes, just make sure you do it slow and steady so you won’t risk splitting the can.
- Spray the can with a glitter spray paint so that even in the daylight it will sparkle!
- Last, add in some battery operated lights so you can bring it outside! I recommend these Battery Fairy Lights
