Chemist Tips on Matcha

Matcha is unique because the tea leaves are shaded from the sun the last few weeks before they are picked. This increases the chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is the chemical in plants that gives them a dark green color.

These tea leaves are ground up into a fine powder known as Matcha.

Due to the way Matcha is processed and grown, it has more potent benefits than regular green tea.

Catechins

According to this research from the National Library of Medicine, matcha contains 137 times more catechin than regular green tea. The one they studied was EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate. You might remember this article from a few months ago about all the chemistry behind tea. I mentioned the word catechin in there because it is a large reason why tea is good for you. Matcha has even more!

With high levels of EGCG comes more health benefits including metabolism support, weight loss, and reduction in inflammation throughout the body.

Foods with high levels of catechins are also linked to cancer fighting, specifically their effects on fighting free radicals!

L-theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid found in teas, especially green tea.

This amino acid has numerous health benefits including:

  • Stress relief
  • Healthy blood pressure management
  • Mood booster
  • Energy booster
  • Memory improvement

While green tea has high levels of L-theanine, Matcha has an even more concentrated amounts.

Detox

Since Matcha has a large amount of chlorophyll, it is a great way to detox. Chlorophyll is a powerful detox substance responsible for ridding the body of chemicals and heavy metals.

These are the top health benefits of drinking matcha, but there are even more when you take a look into the chemical composition of this powder.

If you haven’t tried matcha, I recommend it! Especially for fighting inflammation 🙂
