If you regularly wake up with facial puffiness, under-eye swelling, or a bloated feeling in your face, your lymphatic system may be playing a bigger role than you realize.
As a chemist and mom, I’m always looking for science-backed ways to support healthy skin beyond just skincare products. While serums, moisturizers, sunscreen, and active ingredients are all important, I’ve learned that healthy skin is also influenced by circulation, fluid balance, inflammation, and recovery.
Over the past several years, I started incorporating lymphatic drainage techniques into my daily routine to help with puffiness and fluid retention. What began as a simple wellness habit quickly became one of the most noticeable additions to my skincare routine. I started seeing less morning swelling, a more defined facial appearance, brighter-looking skin, and an overall healthier glow. Many of my friends and people I encounter daily ask me how I get my face so “chiseled”. Make sure you follow on instagram to get all the tips and videos daily for your skin an home!
So, What Is the Lymphatic System?
Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes, and tissues that helps move lymph fluid throughout the body.
This fluid contains immune cells, proteins, fats, excess fluid, and cellular waste products.
Unlike your circulatory system, which relies on your heart to pump blood continuously, your lymphatic system does not have a central pump. Instead, it depends on movement, muscle contractions, breathing, massage, and external stimulation to keep fluid moving.
When lymphatic flow becomes sluggish, fluid can temporarily accumulate in tissues. This can contribute to facial puffiness, swelling around the jawline or cheeks, under-eye fluid retention, dull or tired-looking skin, and even feelings of heaviness or bloating.¹

My Favorite Ways to Support Lymphatic Drainage
Before starting into some of the benefits of lymphatic drainage, I want to share all the things I personally use and do. I think most people know that lymphatic drainage is important and makes a difference. It can tone your skin plus make your face look slender. Be sure to continue reading after these tips for more science behind how it works and who can benefit from it.
1. Facial Massage and Gua Sha
Gua sha is one of my favorite ways to support facial lymphatic drainage.
I use it several times a week around my:
- jawline
- cheeks
- neck
- under-eye area
First, start with this firming serum that has niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Applying this serum is important because it prepares the skin and helps the gua shua glide easily. It also aids in firming and hydrating the skin! Get it 50% off for a limited time using code alexisroch at checkout. Once you’ve applied, you can follow up with an inexpensive gua shua tool
This gentle massage helps encourage fluid movement while temporarily reducing puffiness and promoting a more sculpted appearance. View this Instagram highlight story I did on this. The screenshots are above to get a preview of the motions.
I also use this red light therapy wand which you can move over your face in the motion that supports lymphatic drainage.

2. Compression and Circulation Support
When I feel especially swollen or puffy, I like using compression or sequential pressure tools for additional circulation support.
These can help encourage fluid movement throughout the body, especially after long periods of sitting, travel, or inactivity. I love going to a local spot to use a lymphatic drainage suit.
3. Movement-Based Lymphatic Support
One of the most overlooked ways to support lymphatic health is simple daily movement.
Because the lymphatic system has no pump, movement is one of the most effective natural ways to support circulation.
My favorite lymphatic-supportive habits include:
Walking
Walking activates muscle contractions throughout the legs and core, helping encourage lymph movement upward.
Rebounding or Gentle Bouncing
Mini trampolines, bouncing, or repetitive light movement may help stimulate circulation through changes in gravity and muscle activation.
Deep Breathing
Deep diaphragmatic breathing creates pressure changes in the chest and abdomen that may help support lymphatic movement.
Even 5 minutes of intentional breathing can be beneficial.
Stretching and Yoga
Gentle stretching and yoga twists support circulation, mobility, recovery, and body awareness while reducing physical tension.

4. Recovery Tools I Personally Enjoy
I also enjoy incorporating supportive wellness tools like:
- vibration plates
- manual body massage tools
- red light therapy devices
Red light therapy has been studied for supporting skin rejuvenation, collagen production, and reducing the appearance of inflammation, which pairs well with massage-focused routines.
Why Lymphatic Drainage Matters for Skin Health
Lymphatic drainage is often misunderstood online and frequently marketed as a “detox” solution.
From a chemistry and physiology perspective, lymphatic drainage is not about removing toxins from your body. Your liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin already support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
Instead, lymphatic drainage supports healthy movement of lymph fluid throughout the body.
When fluid circulation is supported, it can help to temporarily reduce visible puffiness and minimize fluid retention in the face. It also supports a more refreshed appearance, improved circulation and healthy-looking skin tone, and reduction the appearance of morning swelling.
This is especially helpful if you notice puffiness after poor sleep, travel, or stress.¹
Who Can Benefit Most From Lymphatic Drainage?
You may benefit from lymphatic support if you wake up with facial puffiness or experience under-eye swelling. Also, if you feel bloated or swollen during hormonal fluctuations, sit for long periods during the day, or want to support circulation as part of your wellness routine.
For me personally, this has been especially helpful as a mom. Between disrupted sleep, stress, hormones, and long days, I noticed my face often looked more swollen in the mornings.
Supporting lymphatic movement became a simple way to help my skin look more refreshed.²
Frequently Asked Questions About Lymphatic Drainage
Does lymphatic drainage actually work for facial puffiness?
Lymphatic drainage may help temporarily reduce fluid retention and visible puffiness, especially in the morning or after travel, stress, or high sodium intake.
Can lymphatic drainage slim your face?
Lymphatic drainage does not remove fat or permanently change facial structure. However, reducing fluid retention can create a temporarily more defined appearance.
How often should you do lymphatic drainage?
Consistency matters more than intensity. Gentle daily habits like walking, breathing exercises, and facial massage can be helpful. I personally do lymphatic drainage techniques every few days on my face, daily for my body (like walking or bouncing), and every few months I might do a lymphatic drainage suit.
Is gua sha enough for lymphatic drainage?
For many people, yes. Gua sha, facial massage, movement, hydration, and healthy habits can all support lymphatic circulation.
Final Thoughts
Lymphatic drainage has become a regular part of my skincare and wellness routine because it supports circulation, reduces visible puffiness, and helps my skin look healthier and more refreshed.
As a chemist mom, I love combining skincare science with realistic daily habits that actually make a difference. While lymphatic drainage is not a miracle treatment, it can be a helpful addition to a wellness-focused skincare routine.
If you’re new to lymphatic drainage, start simple! A daily walk, gentle massage, and movement.
Small habits can make a surprisingly noticeable difference over time.
Lymphatic drainage is not a medical treatment and should not replace medical care. If you experience persistent swelling, pain, or suspected lymphatic issues, consult a qualified healthcare provider.
