Hello and welcome to the 150th edition of the Screenshot of the Week!

To start with, congratulations to the winner of the previous contest! Tobias F.'s screenshot from won with 11 upvotes!

Last week's winning screenshot

To submit a screenshot, simply post it as an answer to this question, but please take note of the following:

  • One screenshot per post, and one post per person, please!
  • Limited picture modifications are allowed, such as cropping, simple filters, and blurring of identifying info such as names, but not adding other images or text.
  • To ensure a fair playing field, please post screenshots you've taken yourself rather than ones you found online.
  • Stack Exchange’s Code of Conduct still applies - so if it would be unacceptable to post normally, it’s unacceptable here.

Also, try to avoid pictures that include spoilers. We want everyone to be able to enjoy this contest, so the less spoilers the better.

How long will the contest run?

We will accept submissions for a week, until September 15, 2025, then have a second week-long period where only voting will be accepted. This is to give every submission, even those posted at the end of the first week, a chance to be voted on by everyone.

After the end of the second week, at the end of the day on September 22, 2025, we will count upvotes only to determine the winning screenshot, which will be featured for a week on the main site's photo widget.

This week's theme: Game Over Screens

Similar to "Loading Screens" (see SotW #26); some are funny, some are sad. Let's see some hidden masterpieces!

As a reminder, we're always accepting suggestions for themed weeks, and have compiled that suggestion process into a question of its own. Additionally, there is the hall of fame you can check out that contains all the previous contest winners.

@Robotnik In this old Etho video, someone just… dies. No reason, just dead. The wiki specifies a way to get it nowadays, but pretty much none of those things were in the game back then. I've never seen it anywhere else. Commented Sep 12, 2025 at 4:25

  • @pinckerman Oh! Right. I think we did have that happen before (apart from holidays), but indeed not in a while. Strange, I always pay attention to that. Perhaps I accidentally looked at an older thread I was copying markup from? I dunno. I'll take better care next time :) Commented Oct 7, 2025 at 14:56

Start a new game on hardcore difficulty in and get killed before you even see a single glimpse of gameplay, because:

cropped screenshot of black game over screen showing an image of a man being helped into a coffin by two skeletons, along with the description below

You have died!
Like many others, you were not fated to live a long life. You left this world before you were even baptised, and your mother, exhausted by childbirth, followed soon after. Your father buried you both together under a weeping willow.

There are quite a few of these game over screens in the game, illustrating the small chance of surviving the protagonist's 20 years of age in late medieval times (10% in this game).
A creative and fun interesting use of these screens!

This reminds me of a Flash game I played, about an alien that needed to escape Earth alive. If you get killed, a tombstone would say "RIP LOL". To this day, I'm unsure if "LOL" is meant to be the name of the alien... Commented Sep 13, 2025 at 17:57

Robotnik hoped for a complex death message and I thought that "FaRo3 was killed by [intentional game design] while trying to escape zombified piglin" would be a fun one… Yeah, turns out, that doesn't exist! :D So this the best I could do:

FaRo3 was killed by [intentional game design]

Here we can see the bed explosion, my dying, some zombified piglins chasing after me after I punched one, as well as subtitles of them getting hurt in the bed's explosion (there's also an empty line, because I made a resource pack to hide unnecessary subtitles). Thanks to various mods, it's even possible to see far into the distance, showing off some of the stuff built on Slicedlime's fan server, like one of the spawn-safe fortresses and some Nether tunnels. Once in 2023, I was building one of those when I noticed that a bed rendering optimisation mod also added a resource pack to make bed models more detailed. I wanted to try it out, took my bed out of my enderchest, placed it down at the random location where I happened to stand …and then apparently turned my brain off, because I clicked it, not considering where I was! Even after many years of playing this game, it still got me…

This always brings me good memories, a friend of mine spent hours creating his Nether base and then decided to try the bed. That place is still burning. Commented Sep 14, 2025 at 11:57
  • Yeah, the Nether hub there burned down multiple times… And once someone thought it would be safe to spawn a Wither under just any bedrock at all, no matter the pattern or what was below. For some reason they didn't actually confirm that and chose to do it right above the hub. Before other people could come to help, the person had already died multiple times and the Wither had exploded its way down into the hub. Commented Sep 14, 2025 at 20:15
  • Ha, I just noticed that there is an "Anvil landed" subtitle! :D That's not actually because there was anvil nearby that the explosion threw around, but because I have that sound set in a mod for any chat message that mentions me. Well, death messages mention my name, I guess! Commented Sep 16, 2025 at 18:31

Tip: Swimming in lava is dangerous.

(It's actually the Steam Ultimate Edition but I don't know if it matters)

The screenshot is depictin an opened book. It seems to have a hard cover with metallic corners. The left side is giving a tip after the player died from falling into lava. The right side has in-game menu options such as restarting from the last checkping, showing world map, game configuration, extras, and exiting the game.

In games like dark souls you also die, a lot, and respawn. Yet you soft "failed" when you die. Might no be much progress that gets lost, but it is there. Commented Sep 10, 2025 at 8:07

features unique game over screens per stage. Let's just say your higher ups are not very happy if you fail stage 1.

Your command being rather displeased

There's also narration, but really, the picture already says it all in this case.
