According to Matthew 27:51-54 ESV, there's a report of Old Testament saints being raised along with Jesus Christ at his resurrection.

And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Are there any biblical or extra-biblical accounts supporting this passage in Matthew? For example, did any historical writers or early church fathers mention or allude to this passage?

  • Hey Mary, we know it is true because the same Spirit that spoke through the apostles is at work in the church and has revealed many truths to many Christians. Yes many of the saints of the Old Testament who had died rose and appeared to many in Jerusalem. I personally trust the Holy Spirit more than any other entity in this life because He called me by my name using the mouths of prophets who were strangers to me, so yes Jesus Christ is Lord. • Welcome to the Biblical Hermeneutics forum, Mary. Please note that this forum is different than most others because it's focused on supporting any questions or assertions with specific scriptures, opinions of experts, context, linguistic analysis, historical sources or references, and logic based on the aforementioned to build a case. Typically, these are quoted in questions and any answers for convenience. Please take the BH tour by clicking the Tour button in the blue area at the lower-left corner of this page. Where is the resurrection of saints in Matthew 27:51–54 supported in Scripture?

"The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised..." (Matt 27:52)

This is a uniquely Matthean event, not found in the other Gospels — and its OT validation is symbolic, not merely descriptive. SP hermeneutics shows that this resurrection of others alongside Christ is:

Prophesied

Patterned

Required by the redemptive arc.

Let’s break it down.

  1. OT Prophetic Patterns of Shared Resurrection

A. Isaiah 26:19

“Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.”

This is the clearest OT text affirming a bodily resurrection of the righteous. The phrase "the earth will give birth" echoes both:

Genesis 1 (creation)

And Matthew 27 (resurrection during earthquake)

Thematically: resurrection tied to earth shaking and light

Timing: connected to vindication of God’s people

B. Daniel 12:2

“Many who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life...”

Here “many” — not all — are raised. Matthew 27 echoes this:

“Many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised…”

SP recognizes this as a first-fruits resurrection:

Not the general resurrection, but a down payment

Fulfilled in Christ and those joined to Him (Rom 6:5)

  1. SP Symbolic Pattern: Tombs Opened by Earthquake

“The earth shook… tombs also were opened…”

This recalls:

C. Numbers 16:31–33 (Korah’s rebellion)

“…the ground split apart under them, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them…”

SP reverses this:

Korah: earth opens to bury the wicked

Christ: earth opens to release the righteous

The symbolism is intentional:

In judgment, the earth consumes;

In resurrection, the earth gives birth.

  1. SPArc: Christ as Firstfruits — And Not Alone

Leviticus 23:10–11

“…bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest…”

Paul confirms this:

“Christ the firstfruits, then those who belong to him at his coming.” (1 Cor 15:23)

But Matthew 27:52 shows that some already came with Him.

SP resolution:

Matthew shows a limited harvest with Christ

These saints = prophetic sign of the greater harvest to come

  1. SP Symbolism: Bride Comes With Him

Song of Songs 6:13 calls out:

“Return, return, O Shulammite…”

Psalm 45:14:

“In embroidered garments she is led to the king; virgin companions follow her...”

Christ does not rise alone:

He is the bridegroom, and a company follows Him

These resurrected saints in Matthew 27 are the companions — a sign that the bride is being gathered

  1. Extra-Biblical or Patristic Mentions?

While early church fathers (e.g. Jerome, Augustine) accept Matthew 27 as literal, no extra-biblical historical record survives naming who those saints were or detailing their witness.

But this does not weaken the claim. SP sees this as:

A spiritual mystery — not for historical tracing, but for doctrinal unveiling

SPConclusion

Matthew 27:51–54 is not an anomaly.

It is the prophesied, symbolically consistent, and arc-required event where:

Christ rises as the firstfruits,

A select group of saints rise with Him,

As a sign of new creation,

And a preview of the full harvest to come.

This is supported in:

Isaiah 26:19

Daniel 12:2

Leviticus 23

Psalm 45 and Song 6

And patterned against Numbers 16
