I noticed the native ads for the first time a few moments ago. Below is a snapshot:

Native ad

I'm using the Stack Overflow dark mode. The font lacks sufficient contrast, making the native ad difficult to read.

I'm using Chrome for macOS. My Theme setting is "System setting".

Theme setting

The first time I saw the native ad was on a search results page. Forcing the page to reload caused the native ad to disappear.

Looking for another page with native ads, I found a very similar native ad on the questions page. This time, forcing the page to reload, the native ad stays, but there is no change.

Another native ad

Curious thing, both native ads are from Stack Overflow. I have not seen native ads from third parties yet.

Despite this being marked as earlier, the issue persisted on my side. Now the issue looks to me be fixed.

Earlier, I tried using a different Chrome profile, logged in again, deleted the site data and cookies, logged in again... the issue persists. If this were a caching issue, it wouldn't be the local cache.

By the way, my Stack Overflow account is linked to two different Google accounts. The issues persist on both accounts.

IIRC, they're initially only serving ads for SO products in the native ads. Commented Jan 19 at 17:42

Ads are illegible --> sounds like a feature to me! 😉 Commented Jan 19 at 17:51
  • @PM2Ring I missed the Jan 15 update, which mentions that. Commented Jan 19 at 18:07

This was fixed late last week, so may be a caching issue. Thanks for the report though.

@Wicket Thanks, I'll update the tag back to status-review and let the team know so they can investigate. Commented Jan 20 at 15:41

I only learned that native ads are live from this meta post. SE should really communicate things such as that properly instead of simply updating the original announcement post which isn't even featured anymore. This was mentioned in multiple other cases already with promises by SE to do better... not that that part matters much given the pile of significantly more important promises broken by SE. At least there's one positive thing in this, which is that either ublock or umatrix filters out these native ads by default, as I didn't see any yet. Commented Jan 20 at 16:58

I believe I found the problem. It was with the System Default setting not setting dark mode correctly when applicable. There should be a fix coming through soon. Commented Jan 20 at 16:58

I believe it is fixed now for System Default. I was seeing it still look incorrect until just now, so the ad caches should have cleared. Commented Jan 20 at 18:35
