I'm trying to identify a Russian movie from definitely before 1982 that I watched on TV in Brazil. What I remember is that the whole movie ends up being a dream, which surprises you at the end when the protagonist wakes up.

When he wakes up, there is a (black?) cat, and something in my memory tells me the movie had something to do with the dead, because at the end, my father said, "Yeah... the dead are dead." I must have watched it after 1973, I think, but these years might not say much, because the movie is Russian and I watched it on TV in Brazil. It might have something sci-fi related.

Not sure about the dead; otherwise, this looks like the Soviet sci-fi comedy Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future (1973):

The main protagonist, engineer Shurik, wakes up at the end. Suddenly he sees the crown, which belongs to his dream, but then he realises it is his black cat.

This movie is, of course, the prequel to the more successful Marty McFly: Back to the Future. Commented May 26, 2025 at 7:50

@Valorum you mean Doc is actually a Soviet engineer, who fled from the regime? It could well be and besides there was always something weird about him 😁 Commented May 26, 2025 at 16:31

Maybe it's Diamond Arm (1969)?

At one point in the movie, Gesha dreams about cutting off Semyon's arm, and this dream turns into a nightmare where a severed arm chases Gesha and his black cat laughs at him.

Later, Gesha wakes up to see his cat is normal.

When your father was talking about the dead, he might have referred to actor Andrei Mironov, who died early, in 1987, at the age of 46.
