I have a memory of a gag in shows and movies that uses the Indiana Jones-style red line on a map showing the adventurers' route, but the route is extremely indirect and winding, looping around before finally reaching the destination. Searching, I can't find a single image, video, or reference. What show or movie am I thinking of?

Red line showing travel route on a map

The adventurer we're following was clearly bumbling; I think it might have been a group. I'm pretty sure they were chasing someone rather than hunting for a treasure. Given the age of the memory, it was probably from the 1980s or maybe 1970s.

There are many; do you have more details about the plot / actors / when you watched / etc? The question is too light on details right now to give a good answer. Commented Sep 4 at 14:24

It has been in a lot, I did a quick google search and movie Rat Race came up as using it but could not find a video/link but I do remember this. The map scene is very indirect route. Commented Sep 4 at 14:26

Do you even recall what era or genre? ... are these pirates in the carribean or Indiana Jones style between the wars, or ...? Commented Sep 4 at 15:27

Good questions. I remember it being a recurring gag in the show or movie. There was a bumbling group traveling together. I think they were perhaps chasing someone else. Given the age of the memory, it was probably from the 1980s or maybe 1970s. Could have even been something like Looney Tunes. Commented Sep 4 at 15:38

I don't know if it's the one you saw, but it was certainly used in Follow That Camel (1967).

It's a parody of Beau Geste, a classic novel that has been filmed several times.

A group of legionnaires march through the desert. A map shows their progress as a dotted line, that is anything but straight. A wind blows up. The legionnaires are pushed back, stepping backwards. The dotted line erases itself.
