Our Story
We don’t just have a message. We have a mission.
As childhood friends, we never imagined that one day, we would be on a mission to change the seafood industry. But sometimes, a simple idea turns into something bigger than we could have ever dreamed.
What started as a passion for seafood has grown into Safe Catch—the world’s only 100% mercury-tested seafood brand, now trusted in over 19,000 retail stores nationwide. It’s been a journey of dedication, scientific innovation, and a relentless commitment to setting a new standard for purity and safety.
Here is our story.
– Sean & Bryan
Founders
From Inspired Beginnings
When Safe Catch founder Sean Wittenberg’s mother developed mercury poisoning from eating tuna daily, he saw an opportunity to put his scientific training into action.
Determined to prevent this from happening to other mothers, infants, children, and families, Sean assembled a team of researchers and scientists to develop a breakthrough mercury-testing technology—one the world had never seen before.
And with that, Safe Catch was born.
Well, almost…
Armed with this revolutionary technology, Sean was confident that other industry leaders would share his passion for giving consumers unparalleled transparency and confidence in the purity of their seafood.
A Journey 10 Years in the Making
1st Attempt
Sean first introduced his mercury-testing technology to national agencies responsible for consumer health protection. Through these conversations, the power of this groundbreaking technology became evident.
This new method had the ability to test more fish for mercury in a single day than was historically tested in an entire year.
While government leaders praised its capabilities, implementing a government testing program faced significant challenges—particularly from within the seafood industry itself.
2nd Attempt
Sean then turned to the industry itself, offering established seafood brands the opportunity to adopt this innovative technology for the benefit of their consumers.
However, major industry players were deeply invested in maintaining the status quo. According to the feedback Sean received, mercury levels in seafood were not considered a priority for consumers—at least, that’s what the industry believed.
3rd Time’s a Charm
Through his own experiences and hundreds of conversations with people across the country, Sean knew the truth—consumers do care.
Yet, not a single major seafood company was willing to adopt a strict mercury-testing program. So, Sean took matters into his own hands. Safe Catch was born.
From the very beginning, Safe Catch was built on a commitment to sustainability, quality, and seafood purity above all else.

Built for Families
When we create Safe Catch products, we ask ourselves one simple question: Is this safe enough for our family to eat?
That mindset guides everything we do, from how we source our fish to the rigorous standards we set for testing, quality, and transparency.
“We don’t have customers, we have family.”

When childhood friend Bryan Boches learned about what Sean was working on, he was immediately hooked—pun intended!
As a new dad, Bryan personally experienced the confusion and uncertainty surrounding seafood consumption during pregnancy and in children’s early developmental years.
When he discovered Safe Catch’s unique mercury-testing process and the technology behind it, he realized it could change the way people think about seafood.
How did he know?
Because he trusted Safe Catch enough to feed his infant son.
