Origin and history of vivify
vivify(v.)
late 14c., vivifien, in medicine, "sustain in life," from Old French vivifier "come alive; give life to" (12c.), from Late Latin vivificare "make alive, restore to life," from vivificus "enlivening," from Latin vivus "alive" (from PIE root *gwei- "to live") + combining form of facere "to make" (from PIE root *dhe- "to set, put").
The sense of "make to be living, give life to" is from 1540s. Vivificate "give life to, enliven (someone's mind), excite, inspire" is recorded in this sense from early 15c., from the Latin past participle. Vivification is by c. 1500 as "spiritual enlightening."
